DSL-2770L wifi and firmware problem
« on: December 09, 2013, 08:39:39 AM »

Hi, this is a weird case.

I have a DSL-2770L router (bought in Spain). Worked fine for 3 months, 24/7.
Last week I had to switch it off. After switching on,  the wifi is no longer detected by any client.
In the Wireless Setup page everything is ok, the status reports that Wireless is enabled, the wifi led in the front is on.
But none of my wireless clients (laptop, two mobile phones, printer) can see my wifi access point anymore.
I'm an IT professional, I'm familiar with all the options in the wireless configuration.
I've tried everything, changing ssid, channel, transfer rate, network visibility, encryption method, disabled wps, reset router to factory defaults, running the setup program from the Windows CD. Nothing seems to work. Router says the wireless is on but it's not detected by any client, even from half meter distance.
All the other functions of the device work fine.
Any advice is welcomed.

Naturally I looked for a firmware update.
The device reports that firmware is EU_1.00 03202013

All the European web sites for the device, report that the latest firmware is from date 13/09/2013.
But their link to the ftp site is:
ftp://ftp.dlink.eu/Products/dsl/dsl-2770l/driver_software/DSL-2770L_fw_revA1_1-00_eu_en_20130320.zip
which points to the old 20/03/2013 dated firmware...
In the ftp site I can see that there is another firmware:
ftp://ftp.dlink.eu/Products/dsl/dsl-2770l/driver_software/DSL-2770L_fw_revA1_1.01_eu_10232013.zip

I tried to update the firmware using the image in the revA1_1.01_eu_10232013.zip file, but it failed.

I noticed that for Australia there is a more recent firmware.
Can I use the Australian firmware version with my EU device?

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any cordless house phones?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
6" minimum safe distance between devices.

Are any of the clients see the SSID name at all?

I recommend that you phone contact D-Link support and ask them if it's supported to use an AU region FW on a EU region model modem. There could be differences. Better safe then sorry.

For doing FW updates, you can try this:

No, never no matter what is the configuration, they don't see the ssid name at all.

I'll contact support, but I'm not a fluent Spanish speaker yet and I'm afraid I'll not be able to explain them the problem...

Contact the EU region if you need more English specking support. Ya, seems like something is wrong with the modem.

Let us know how it goes and good luck.

DLink was very quick to reply. They suggested to put the device in recovery mode and upload the newest firmware, but it did not work (the firmware update). So it goes for replacement.

Hi, just an update.
I got a replacement unit (well it was the original unit after all), it worked for 3 months again and then poof, the wifi disappeared again as soon as I switched off the unit.  :(
The firmware update always gives an error, even in recovery mode, the settings are lost after a restart.
No DLink for me again, what a waste >:(

So what was the reason of turning OFF the modem? If you do turn OFF the modem WiFi will not be operational when the modem is OFF.  ::)

What browser are you using to do the FW updates? Only IE is recommended for doing any FW updates with any add-ons disabled.

There is a v1.02 available for the EU region. Might be worth checking out.

Sorry if I didn't explain it well, I referred to the original problem. After the device was switched off and then back ON, the wifi is not detected anymore by any client.

It's 2014. I can't accept that any service *requires* IE to operate. Even so, yes, I tried with that as well.

Was the clients rebooted as well to clear there network caches after the modem was power cycled?

Due to many upgrades and features added in by 3rd party browser mfrs, it's hard for D-Link developers to keep up to date with compatibility with 3rd party browsers. They are updated more then the standard Windows IE or Mac Safari browsers. Thus there maybe some incompatibility issues seen with Opera, FF and Chrome. I don't take chances with it comes to FW updates with any networking product. I prefer to stay safe with well tested browsers like IE and Safari for doing FW updates. I presume there is some testing done with 3rd party browsers however in real world environments, when users buy a new PC or Mac, they come preloaded with IE or Safari for quick and easy access to Internet services and devices. Users upon conneting the PC or Mac may need the use of these browsers to set up there devices and not have to worry about downloading a browser to do this. 3rd party browsers are end user preferences and I presume at some level, some testing is done with them here and there when updates are released.

I highly recommend always using IE or Safari for doing any FW updates on any product. Managing and configuration of device can be done with 3rd party browsers with little issues.

Play is safe and use what works best when it comes to FW updates.

You should give v1.02 a try and see if it helps any.

Thanks for your time. Where do you see the v1.02 version?
I'm looking at
ftp://ftp.dlink.eu/Products/dsl/dsl-2770l/driver_software/

and I don't see something like that. I've tried all 3 versions there.

Thank you, I managed to update the firmware to v1.02.
But the problem persists, no wifi. Waiting for RMA.

While you wait for an RMA, is there any chance you can take this modem to a different location, say family, friends or some other place for a quick test to see if this problem persists? I would be a good test to see if the problem follows. I'm wondering if there is something in your current area that maybe a factor in this issue.

Also curious, if you disable all WiFi security on the modem temporarily then turn OFF the modem then back on, do the devices see the SSID name and can they connect?
