DIR-645 Slow Internet
« on: October 24, 2013, 03:44:59 PM »

Hey,

So, I have a D-Link DIR-645 that seems to not like to connect or stay connected to the internet.

Contacted D-Link support numerous times to no avail. Because the router is just past the warranty date, I can't bring it back :/

So, here is all my info:

Have a Rogers Internet Hitron Cable Modem/Router Model CGN2-ROG; all of the settings have NOT been changed except the Wireless capabilities have been turned off by my service provider.

Regarding my DIR-645 -
IP Address: 192.16.5.1 (was told to use this by D-Link support)
Hardware: A1
Firmware: 1.04 (Updated just last week)
Every other setting is all factory default.

The original reason I contacted support was because the router had been acting up after getting a new security system installed - which works off of the CGN2 as well ( I have 3 routers all pulgged into it, one for my room, one for basement and one for first floor). The router would kick me off the internet, and would have trouble loading pages when connected (took anywhere between 1-2 minutes to load email).

The guy from D-Link support said that I need to change the IP address of the DIR, thus I did. I have not been booted off since, and for the first day or 2 the internet was perfect. Then, the other day, problems started up again.

Pages would take anywhere between 30 seconds - 3 minutes, depending on the site. My iPhone and iPad can't access the internet even when I am standing beside it.

If I could get some help, that'd be great. D-Link makes great products, but am starting to get turned off of them because of this silly little problem that no one can fix.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give :)

Welcome!
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Regarding your ISP modem:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r27598072-Extreme-Plus-Hitron-Technologies-CGN2-ROG

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any cordless house phones?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

3rd Party Security Software Configurations
  • Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
  • Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Router Placement

Welcome!
  • What region are you located?
Ottawa, Canada
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Both. Wired for my desktop, wireless for my laptop
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates?
More then once.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
25mbps Down & 2mbps upload
  • If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. <-- Done this before, but because of another Rogers system running in the house, can't bridge (Smart Home Monitoring has to have a direct connection into the modem, and there is no way I am going to run my whole home network off of their router -.-
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
1500
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.
Don't have DSL/PPPoE

I presume this is a problem with the ISP Modem as it has a built in router already. If you connect a PC to it, does the PC get good speeds?

Is Traffic Shaping and QOS ON or OFF?

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

I presume this is a problem with the ISP Modem as it has a built in router already. If you connect a PC to it, does the PC get good speeds?  It's decent. But about 5 minutes ago, the internet ****ped out on us.. So not only did the router screw up, the modem did as well. (Although, that I'm not suprised about - that Hitron modem is ****. It's better used as a paperweight lol)

Is Traffic Shaping and QOS ON or OFF? Pretty sure it is, I disconnected the router (i didnt want to) but I need the wifi to work, so I enabled it on the modem/router.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure. If someone is willing, sure! Add me on skype, anxboxuser or message me here and I'll give you my email :)

Thanks :D

Same.

Just had two Shaw guys here for two hours struggling to solve this. They installed a new hitron and we faced the same problem. My download speeds went from 25 Gb on my old shaw modem to just 8 Gb on the new hitron. AND I bloody well paid for an upgrade to the more premium service!  And - since they de-provisioned the old modem, they were unable to re-install it! .....F**K! ..... Going direct through the hitron modem gets me great DL speeds (50 Gb).

Now my whole LAN is borked and I am running just four lines direct through the modem - bypassing my 8-port d-link that trunks the house. I need my d-link back! GRRRRRR

A Shaw tech gets here tomorrow and "hopefully" fixes the problem by installing a "old model" Shaw modem and bridging it.

Any status? :(

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. Call the ISP and ask to see if the ISP modem can be bridged. Also check the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address of 192.168.0.1. Check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem, and if modem can't be bridged, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.
Example of a D-Link router configured for PPPoE with ISP Modem bridged: PPPoE Configuration on a Router

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the DSL modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Thanks everyone. Was having the same issue. Showing 50 mb/s straight from cable modem - but only 7 mb/s from my DIR-645.

Read this forum  - turned off QoS - and bam - getting 50 mb/s from the DIR-645.

Thanks everyone!

How do you have QoS configured when it's enabled? This can be enabled and set up correctly and should give your ISP spec speeds when enabled and configured correctly.
