May Purchase this router?
« on: November 20, 2014, 10:16:04 AM »

Hi I am considering purchasing this router. I currently have the dgl 4500 and like it but feel like its time to upgrade. I am running on DSL on a 2.53 Mbps DL and .33 Mbps UL. My main concern is how stable the wired connection is? I have two xbox 1's in my house that run on power line adapters so it is not to important how stable the Wifi just the wired connection. I like and read good things about stream boost so I feel like on how limited my bandwidth situation is it can help keep pings low. Any insight on this particular matter would be much appreciated.

One last question, on the average, how fast are firmware updates coming out for this and are you able to bounce around firmwares? i know on the dgl 4500 once you moved up in firmwares you couldn't downgrade at all (unless you had a workaround that the community came up with). Thanks! I look forward to buying this router.

Your ISP speeds are well with in the realm of this routers handling. However the ISP speed package you have may not be enough for some gaming and additional streaming. Some streaming requires a minimum level for download now days. Gaming and pings maybe impacted by this as well. Do you have access to higher ISP speeds?

FW releases have not been steady as we would expect them to be. There has been some issues on the Qualcomm side of SB that have impacted FW releases. D-Link is aware of these issues and is working to maintain and fix the issues. The last Beta is pretty good. There are still one or two problems we are seeing however they do not effect how the SB and the router work overall. I'm keeping tabs with D-Link as best as I can to help them with any testing and information on the router and to help users with any problems seen. There is this error being seen on some routers when trying to save a configuration. Not every one seems to exhibit this error. And on my router, ABE fails to complete it's speed test run so I have disabled it and just have SB enabled and thats working well. Not everyone is seeing this problem. So it maybe HW specific.

I'm currently running the 5500 and have my 360 connected to a DIR-868L in bridge mode thats connected to the 5500 on AC. Gaming has been great for me. Little or no lag seen while gaming last nite.

Yes the 5500 has seen some problems since release. The 4500 has some as well, however being a new QoS engine with Qualcomm and everything that goes in to that and the new UI, theres been a learning curve for sure. If you have a store that you can buy one that has a refund policy, I highly recommend getting one from a place with a refund policy. Test the router out and see how it does and if it meets your liking.

Let us know if you have any more questions and what you decide to get.

Unfortunately at this moment I do not have access to higher speeds at this moment.

Does this router have any known issues (that dlink knows about, not user error) that makes the router broken (reboots, drops ect)? The errors you talk about seem relatively minor, which is good.

Yeah the DGL 4500 did have its fair share of issues but I think alot of it was due to users not doing there homework and refusing to read the guides that were made for the user. I was overall satisfied with the router and the interface as well compared to tomato and ddwrt. and it appears the dgl 5500 has a similar interface that ill be familiar with while running the emulator.

Thanks for the feed back, I appreciate it.

You can review the features and bug list here and D-Link IS aware:

Ya, after I got my 4500 and started diving into it and learning how to use it and learning all about WiFi, i found that a lot of problems users were posting about were envrionment or mis-configuration cause. Still applies today. Why we help users identify these problems before having them go to official support.

The 5500 has a completely different interface UI from the 4500:

Can I downgrade the router firmware? or am I stuck with whatever I put on it as I move up the ladder. I.E being at the mercy of Dlink if I flash a buggy firmware and cant go back.

Yes you can downgrade if you need to.
Always follow this:  FW Update Process

I recommend if you get one, please try the router out first out of the box before upgrading.  ;)
