855L will not work with BrightHouse ARRIS IP Phone/Modem box
« on: January 24, 2014, 10:38:11 AM »

It worked fine with the old one, does not work with the new one. It will get an IP and talk, but nothing is passed through.  Windows thinks there is a DNS issue.  Dynamic DNS is disabled.

My old Zylink router works fine, I plugged it in, all was happy.  It is the crutch until this is resolved, or I tell Amazon to take the 855 back.

Wi-fi works fine, the internal functions work fine.  The 855 will assign IP addresses just fine.  It simply will not talk to the Modem other than to get an IP address.

I have tried all 4 ports on the modem.

A PC hooked to the modem works fine, the Zylink works fine.  Everything talks but the 855.

Any help would be appreciated.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
Example of a D-Link router configured for PPPoE with ISP Modem bridged: PPPoE Configuration on Router

Also the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address, 192.168.0.1, check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem, if so, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.

  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.[/b]
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Hardware is A1
Firmware was just flashed to 1.01
Located in Central Florida
Issue is with both wired and wireless connections
Factory reset tried before I flashed to 1.01

ISP is Brighthouse, Roadrunner.  It is a cable modem.
Modem says ARRIS on the front, TG862
Modem is supposedly in Bridge mode.  But, the WAN IP is a private address 192.168.  Hm...  But, the ZyXel is configured the same way and works.
I checked the PPPoE link, that is not what I am supposed to have, and I do not need a user ID and password to connect.

I like the IP address change idea, but it did not work.
Uplink is 3 Meg, downlink is 30 Meg

Advanced DNS is already off.

Unicasting turned on, will test.

DNS relay was already on.

DNS is correct.

Local Connection Only now set for IP 6

Did not see these settings..  "Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test."  Did enable SPI, to test.

Set time (was off).

Thoughts?  It has to be something dumb.  The ZyXel works...

What would I have seen for an IP address if I were in Bridge Mode?  Brighthouse claims they left it that way.

Ya, You need to get the ISP modem into bridge mode or pass the public IP address and NAT to the 855 router.

And looking at the specs on the ISP modem there default IP address for the modem is 192.168.0.1 so this maybe the problem and it's conflicting with the ISP Modem.

You can change the 855L IP address to 192.168.0.254 then test.

However you'll still have a double NAT condition which is not preferred and will cause connection problems with application services.

If you can access the ISP modem, I believe there is an option to have the modem pass a public IP address to the router...

I will work it.

I already changed the IP.  I think I need brighthouse to change the modem.

Question, how come the other router does not care?  Any idea?

Not sure, is the IP address of the other router the same or does it differ from the ISP modem?

IP address for other router is similar, 0.2.

It has the same DNS address, same basic IP configuration.

It is like the 855 gets an address, then gets pissed off, or pisses off the modem.  They never seem to talk again.  They can talk, or the address would not be provided.  I can refresh addresses all day long.  But, that is the extent of the communications.  The workstations think the issue is lack of a DNS.  I used a know address for a web site I know in the browser, and it worked.  I have connectivity.  I was able to get to the site.  Something is wrong or different with how the 855 passes off DNS requests.  I just cannot see it.

So, chasing the DNS rabbit...  When I enable Advanced DNS, I get a different primary DNS, and a secondary DNS.  And, that works. And, it is a different DNS server than the one being used by the old router.

And, it works.  At least for the tablet I have been using for troubleshooting.

It appears that the 855 has an issue with how it plays with the Brighthouse box when they need to collaborate on the DNS.  The fact that it has a different server getting provided says something is going on.

Thanks for the help, I will be back if something else fails.  I still need to switch things back to the 855 and configure it more to my needs.

Need to see if you can get the Arris modem to pass a public IP address or put the IP address that the 855 gets from the Arris modem into the modems DMZ and test.

Issue Resolved.

The shortcut to make it a Bridge is to disable wi-fi and do one other little thing.  It does not always work.  Re-contacted Brighthouse, better tech, it is now a bridge.  It now has a non-private IP address.

There is also supposedly a national problem with the ARRIS modem that is being looked at.

Thanks,

I wondered about that...Glad you got it taken care of.

I've seen many issues with Arris modems before and personally don't care for them. I've always recommended Motorola SB 6 series modems however Arris recenly bought Motorola's modem division.  >:(

So will see what goes on. There are Motorola's still being sold I guess until that stock runs out.

Hope the modem works well and you enjoy the 855L.

I really appreciate the help.

A different modem would be grand, however I get what Bright House sends.  Thanks again.

You can avoid ISP modem fees by buying your own FYI.  ;)

Enjoy.
