What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

What is the WAN Ports speed set for now on the 855L? Try 100 or 1000Mb if your ISP modem supports 1000Mb on the connector.

For doing any FW updates, please do a factory reset, send the FW file and let it process then factory reset the router once more and set up from scratch.

There is v1.03 FW for the 855L now...

My modem is SMCD3GN in bridge mode only.
Yes speed was set at 1000Mb

I have done a factory reset and re-installed the D-Link 855L from scratch.  Annoying that the 855L requires so many reboots that take 45 secs each.  Reboots on 655 were only about 10 seconds.

Are there are benefits to updating FW 1.02 to 1.03 regarding this issue?

Using it now, still 1.02 FW.

BTW, the D-link 655 did not lose any internet connections.

I will advise within a day to see if this has fixed the problem.

Thank you for your help.

Reboot times go up with new features with in the router and the way the HW is designed. Not much can be done about that. I usually can access the web page about 5-10 seconds before I see the UI timer run out. DIR 655 series didn't have much features and remember, the 855L is dual band, the 655 is 2.4Ghz only. So it doesn't have to load all the extra stuff that the 855L has.  ::)

There is a security enhancement in v1.03. Not sure if anything related to disconnects.

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the DSL modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

I'd look into a new modem as well. This model is a few years old and has draft wireless support that probably wasnt' certified. I know you have it in bridge mode however doesn't mean other items on this modem could be a cause and if the DIR 655 is from same era with same draft N design that you never updated FW on, probably works well however the 855L is new generation with certifications and newer design and networking.

The 855L failed its connection once again.  I really believe it must be defective.

1. The 655 has not failed even once - same cables, coaxial set-up, SMC modem etc.  I did an upload download speed test today, there is zero performance benefit for download or upload using the 855L over the 655.  Its wireless is considerably improved over the 655 but I have an Asus AC68U in AP mode to supply my home with wireless, direct wired into 855L or now 655.
2. The 855L worked fine for approx 6 months, until a couple of weeks ago, it has since gotten progressively worse.
3. Your comments on SMC are correct, except if there were compatibility issues, I would have realized them before 6 months use.  I also see by this thread that this problem with the internet dropping has happened to other 855L router users.

Once again, thank you for your help, I appreciate your time and quick responses.  I am going to contact D-link for a return.

Sounds good. Ask for level 2 support and for an RMA.

Let us know how it goes.

nooo I just started having this problem.  I bought my router refurbished from ebay.  probably from the guy that never responded back lol.

My router was working fine until last few days.  Wireless works fine, my hdhomerun which is wired was working fine.  Had to reboot router cause my main wired pc wasnt responding, not even to my modem 192.168.100.1 .   modem logs not showing any problem when this outage occured.

wierd issue.   I rebooted the router and its working again.

Getting to the point of ditching this router for my old one.  I need N wireless for gamestream.

I was hoping for a solution to the problem here.

I do not think this is just a single incident because my unit ALSO have the same problem.
However, my unit's issue is more server. The LAN port drop signal very often on some days (more than once per hour.) I have to restart the router constantly for it to work properly. My wireless devices used to have the same problem too but upgrading the firmware was able to solve the issue.
I have been using D-link routers for yeas and was happy with their quality until now.
Very disappointed at the Quality of my DIR-855L.
Going through RMA right now and might consider other brands for my next router.

I have the exact same issue, after two days the wired ports on the device die, a reboot fixes it for the next 48 hours then they die again, reboot fixes it, die. repeat.

Hardware Version: A1 (DIR-855L)
Firmware: 1.03 , 07, May, 2014
North America
Factory Reset: No on original 1.0 firmware as it was new, YES on 1.03

Working before?: No idea item was new and firmware updated for security features.

ISP: WoW Cable
Modem: Self owned, Motorola Surfboard SB6121
IP is always Dynamic
Upspeed: 5Mbps
Down speed: 110Mbps
CAT6 is in use
MTU set according to ISP (AUTO, 1500)

Lets try a reload of the FW code and see if it does anything using the following process:
>FW Update Process

Factory reset, send the file, the reset once more then set up from scratch. Don't load any saved config files.

  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
