Connecting to router with WPA2 / AES
« on: January 15, 2013, 11:50:05 AM »

I'm thinking about buying the DIR505, but I have a question about it.

I saw in the manual that You can set-up a wireless network with it with WPA2 / AES encryption, but can this device connect to an existing wireless network with WPA2 / AES encryption (in hotspot or repeater mode)?

I thought I read somewhere that this was not possible.

It should be able to pick and use what ever the signal is using coming from the WiFi source.

WPA2 and AES is preferred however when in repeater mode I presume it will only repeat what is configured and set up at the source. So if the source is using WPA and TPIK only then the 505 will only use that mode.

Ok, I think I understand what You mean, but if there is an existing wifi network with WPA2 / AES encryption, can I setup a hotspot with the DIR 505 with WPA / TPIK connecting to that existing WPA2 / AES network ?

(My situation: I have a router with WPA2 / AES encryption and I want to keep it that way, but I have a (not very often used) laptop that only supports WPA / TPIK. Can I use the DIR 505 to connect the laptop to the DIR 505 which in turn connects to my wifi WPA2 / AES router)

Hmmm, would be interesting to see if that works.

Not sure if HOTSPOT mode supports a single mode on the host router side and something different on the client side. It's possible it should work.

One thing you could do for the older LT, upgrade the WiFi on it. Get a newer WiFi adapter card installed, if it doesn't have that option to upgrade, get a DWA USB adapter card. If it's not used much, then the USB option would be a good solution to get it able to use WPA2 and AES.
