Title: PPTP VPN from WAN to LAN
Post by: figueira on February 19, 2013, 02:58:10 AM
Hi

I need configure the firewall on my D-Link DIR-600L to accept incoming pptp conections and to port forwarding port 1723 to local pc.
So far no progress....
i've enable DMZ for the ip 192.168.1.XXX
i've created a firewall rule to allow all trafic in all ports from WAN to LAN - ip 192.168.1.XXX
i've created port forward rule from remote port 1723/TCP to local port 1723 to ip 192.168.1.XXX
created a port forward (i thinks this doesn't work) port 47/TCP and UPD for GRE to local port 47 ip 192.168.1.XXX.

Can anyone from help me to how get this thing to work please?

My d-link DIR-600L has this Firmware Version :1.00,  Fri 20 Jan 2012
The rule of port forwarding 3389 for RDP works like a charm but PPTP doesn't.

What region are you located?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

I'm in Angola.
The isp service is Cable and the cable modem is Scientific Atlanta.

The problem isn't with the ISP because i connect the vpn server directly to the cable modem and it works.

It's something about port forwarding or firewall rules that i don't see how to do it.

Is uPnP enabled? Try disabling it, save settings then test.
Are there check box that are empty that need to be selected and enabled for the actual rule to be enabled and go into effect on the web page?

You might try using Virtual Server settings instead and test.

What ISP Modem model do you have?

the model of the cable modem is EPC2100R2.

the DIR-600L doesn't have Virtual server setting page only has port forwarding and application rules.
Is there a firmware that enables the use of virtual server?

i'll try to disable UPnP that's a good call thanks.

the checks boxs that enable and disable the rules are correct.

Due to the 601 router having customizable Firewall options, I presume that this negates having Virtual Server features thus it probably won't be available on this model.

This maybe a configuration issue. I'll see if we can get additional review on this from another user I know.

Ok, I think I found the main point of confusion. Basically VPN needs PPPtP on port 1723 forwarded to 192.168.1.XXX but it also needs the firewall opened for GRE traffic. Where the confusion is GRE uses traffic TYPE 47, NOT port 47. GRE no more has a specific port then TCP or UDP has a port. The problem is this router doesn't allow for PPPtP passthrough on the Application Level gateway (ALG). Now that fix for that is put 192.168.1.XXX in the DMZ to bypass the firewall. However, I believe with Dlink routers, putting a IP into the DMZ makes it bypass all forwarding. And port 1723 isn't being stopped by the firewall like GRE is, but rather by NAT.

Long story short? I don't think this router will work for your purpose. Does any co-workers have this model working for the VPN?

Whats your price point? Closest to the price point of the DIR-600L that has VPN support is the DIR-601 which is 25$ on Amazon. If you want to upgrade, I would suggest the DIR-655, which has been number one on Newegg for several years at 69$. Neither of those have cloud support. If that is a deal breaker... the only Cloud enabled router by dlink that has decent ratings and VPN support would be the DIR-865L but that is 176$. I consider that overkill considering there is only 1 device on the market that can connect at 1750 speecs. I think you would be happy with a DIR-655.

If he needs Cloud, would one of the other L models work like the 636L or 826L work with VPN? I just got the 826L for $60 at Newegg.

Yea, have you seen the Newegg ratings though? I am not going suggest anything that has 50% 1 egg. Seems the initial firmware release had some serious wireless stability and performance issues.

I see there has been a update v1.02 to correct that. But even after that, alot of the review sites speak not so well of it. I still suggest the DIR-655 over it, and just installing a NAS or media server on your network. JMHO

For which model?

My 826L has been working well however since i don't use VPN, I could tell. Only one user of VPN and I believe his is pass thru.

Ratings are good however to the other side of that is what is unknown, mis configurations due to the users part and other factors that may contribute to false positives on the ratings that users give. My 2 cents.

Well I think maybe were jumping the gun. First we need to hear from OP about if he even wants to get a new router. He might try to make this one work. I just don't see how.

Check out one of the DIR-645 or 655 or 636L series routers. Those support more VPN features.

Let us know what you decide to get.
