We believe in part that heat issues are HW related and can't be fixed by FW.
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=56608.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=56608.0)

IT's been found that the composite heat sink either need to be replaced with metal sinks or the addition of adding a laptop cooler in most cases helps resolve heat issues.

You still have your 827?

Hi.

Has anyone with the overheating issues tried this firmware?

v1.05 works for me.

Hi FurryNutz, since you also reported having the overheating issues, does v1.05 helps to diminish or solve this? have you noticed any improvement?

I eventually have the overheating issue (seems that sometimes the external cooler is not cooling enough, so DIR-827 collapses and I lost WiFi, have to powercycle it).

Thanks
Hector

I haven't seen any issues with v1.05 and it runs well. However I have done the DIY mod for the heat sink problem which I presume may resolve your units issues.

I recommend reviewing the mod info and if you can, I would go ahead and do it. I presume that the composite heat sinks may not be enough or they are separating from the chips they are supposed to be attached too thus not helping in dissipating the heat.

Unfortunately I cannot mod or even open the DIR-827 it's property of my ISP not mine.

The unit was working fine with other cooling base (now I'm using another cooling base but the air flow is less than the previous one).

Perhaps I will contact my ISP, show this thread and ask them to replace the DIR-827 with another router.

FurryNutz, with your experience which D-link routers and APs are ok, without overheating issues? and without any other issues?

Thanks

You should go back to the other cooling base sir if this new one isn't working well.

I'm enjoying the DIR-826L and 868L routers. The 868L is a great router. Better cooling for sure. You may just want to get your own router.

I see there is a new DAP-1520 and 1650 APs. I haven't had any experience with these models yet.

Any idea of what is available in your area regarding D-Link models?

Will get the other cooler base (I gave it to my mother for her laptop, so I will wither get it back or purchase a new one)

my ISP also has the DIR 857, so I guess changing the 827 for the 857 will result in the same heating issues.  ???

I will see with my ISP to setup the DIR-827 in tier 2 only as an AP, not as a router (hence releasing processing and perhaps also cooling more the device).

Other option will be to purchase a router or AP by myself (will do a research to find the best option).

So my 3 options:
1) get a better cooler pad
2) Try my DIR-827 as AP in tear 2 with my ONT device
3) purchase a router or AP (Since my ONT is a router, I think it would be better to go for an AP)

Can you manage the 827 router now? If you can, you can do this if you want to try using it as a wired AP:

I can manage the DIR 827.

I've already placed a support Request with my ISP, explained all that overheating stuff and they will come to my house tomorrow to replace the DIR-827, don't know and they could not tell me, if it's going to be for the same model or another.

Will let you know, either way if it's a D-Link I will ask the ISP to set it in AP mode (I can also configure it in case they will only replace it)

Will keep you informed.

Hi.

On May 2 my ISP replaced the DIR-827 with the same model.

We have configured the new DIR-827 just to act as an access point and left all the router functionality to the ONT router, the technician told me that the cooling pad was no loner needed, but I left it anyway, because I noticed that the new DIR-827 was a bit hot.

What is strange is that this cooling pad throws few air, but with the old DIR-827 it was not cooling properly, or perhaps the old DIR-827 was hotter?

This new DIR-827 with the same cooling pad is very cool  8)

Since May 2 until today, my Internet and WiFi are working fine  ;D

All the weekend I tested it by using Netflix, and also downloaded several files, and everything is ok.

I've even notice that my WiFi is more stable with less speed variations.

So I guess that my old DIR-827 was also defective.

Hope things stay ok.

Thanks

Glad you got a new one and it's working well.
What version of FW came on it?

HW revision A1
Firmware 1.04

Since it's working fine I'll leave it that way.

Regards!
