i am sick to the teeth of my wifi connection keep going off at random times. it sometimes just goes off for 30 secs & sometimes im forced to reset the router. i am constantly searching google for tips on what to change to solve this problem and none has worked so far.
below i will try to list all information that i think is relevant to the problem. the tips that i have collected from various sources on google are to disable QOS (this interferes with Utorrent apparently), disable DNS relay, disable firewall, disable UPNP & enable multicast streams.
today i have experienced the wifi going off whilst bittorrent is downloading. So there seems to be an issue with downloading and wifi.
I would really appreciate you taking the time to help me.
thanks
james
I have a fiber connection of 100 Mbps download speed & 100 Mbps upload speed
the speed that i am receiving (speedtest.net) through cable is 91.98Mbps download & 57.77Mbps upload. through wifi the speed is 24.41Mbps download & 25.76Mbps upload.

- If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI (http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-features/30969-what-do-80211ns-optional-features-mean-for-you), WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

I am in Sweden
I have done a factory reset many times before & after the upgrade
The issue has been the same
The broadband connection is DSL (I think). I have a media box in my apartment that I connect to.
Dynamic
1 Ipad, 2 smartphones, 2 laptops are connected via wifi
we don't have a cordless house phone & not sure about our neighbours
11 wifi connections found
-
If you have 11 other WiFi neighbors near by, this maybe the cause of the problem...Managing Signal Congestion (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53228.0)
You need to find a open channel thats not being use if possible.
- Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
If any of this still fails, you should think about getting the Laptops and iPad switched to a 5Ghz radio...
-
is there a general rule when choosing a channel or is it just any channel that is not being used is a good channel?
also is i chang my transmission level to low, wont this lower my download & upload speed?
-
Usually 1, 6, 11 or in the EU region, I think you have 13? If they are open...
No, just changes the broadcast foot print or range. If your in an apartment complex or small living area, it's best to lower the signal in these cases...

ok
the settings that i have altered from the advice that i have gotten from various sources are;
to disable QOS
to disable WAN traffic shaping
to disable SPI in firewall settings
to disable UpNp
to enable multicast streams
change beacon period from 100 to 75
change RTS threshold from 2346 to 2306
change fragmentation threshold from 2346 to 2307
disable short gi¨
to select 802.11n only
channel width : 20MHz/40Mhz
WPA mode : WPA2 only
what are you thoughts about these settings change. good or bad?
also how is the best way to set up utorrent to download your torrents

ok i have now changed the transmission to low, changed the channel to use 6 (low to no users are on this channel). have a slight increase in speed now 29.69Mbps download & 45.34Mbps upload. On the desktop with a wired connection I am getting 80.68Mbps download & 64.36Mbps upload. I am paying my internet supplier for 100 download & 100 upload. shouldnt I get a better connection speed when using wifi than what i do now?
-
It's not recommended to speed test on WiFi vs wired. Theres too many variables and possible interferences on Wifi that can cause inaccurate speed results on Wireless. I recommend only speed testing wired LAN.
Be aware that this router is a reported max limit on the uplink in QoS so if TS is enabled with QoS, speeds may decrease some. Don't ask me why, however someone at D-Link didn't think about anyone having ISP speeds faster than 2Mb and there has been debate on weather QoS management is really needed at these higher ISP speeds. This model router and a few others have this issue. Newer model routers don't have this limitation.

great. thankyou very much for your help.
i will let you know how the current configuration goes

i have had my first problem already. my wifi connection was temporarily down. On my laptop i noticed that it had a exclamation mark where the signal bar is, saying limited connectivity. On my phone it says it was connected with a full signal however nothing was happening. The problem seemed to go away after 1 minute
-
Might be those changes under the WiFi that you did. Go back to default settings...
-
the transmission rate?
-
These:
change beacon period from 100 to 75
change RTS threshold from 2346 to 2306
change fragmentation threshold from 2346 to 2307
Go back to default and test..
-
sorry to bug you again...my wifi is going off in periods of about 30 minutes. it doesn't seem that the wifi signal is stopped transmitting as normally on my windows computer in the taskbar the wifi signal bar either turns grey or a yellow exclamation mark is placed on top, the signal stays the same but i notice that i can not surf the internet. this happens on all my devices not just my laptop. i saw in another forum that someone gave remote assistance by accessing their router to change settings. if you can do this for me i think it will be better as you can see easily the settings.
-
Send me a PM with remote user ID and PW. Please be wired to the back of the router with one wired LAN PC. I recommend doing a factory reset before we review and configure anything...I don't know what you've changed so starting clean from scratch is preferred....
-
i have sent you an email as couldnt find how to pm you.
not sure what you need

PM me here and send me the remote user ID and PW here:

A lot of neighboring WiFi around since router is in a apt complex.
Set for chl 13 since nobody was using and set power level to Medium...
Let us know how this works...may need to move to 5Ghz radio.
-
sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the wifi just went off
-
Can you try the low setting?
sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the wifi just went off
-
just changed from medium to low
-
k...I'd start looking to the 5Ghz suggestion I mentioned...DAP-1522.
-
is this the only option or can i get a cheaper one. on a budget :-\
-
Only thing that might be cheaper is this:
http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/home-solutions/connect/routers/dir-826l-cloud-gigabit-router-n600 (http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/home-solutions/connect/routers/dir-826l-cloud-gigabit-router-n600)
You'll have to find out the pricing in your region. It would be a replacement for the 655 however as the 826L is a full on router with dual band WiFi. Or you could Turning a router into an AP (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=40856.0) if you wanted to keep the 655 as the main host router.
-
If you use the 826L as the main router, you could do the same thing with the 655 for a wired AP if you needed too...
-
ok, what router would you recommend no price limitation. then whats the router you would recommend on a budget?
will a new router be better than buying a 5ghz access point and keeping the dir655
-
The 826L is a good little router for a budget, I have this one. For no budget, the DIR-868L. I have the 868L too.
Kind of up to you and your budget situation and what you want to do. AC mode that the 868L offers is good however not all devices can use it, just yet. Yes you can still use your devices on the 868L on N mode just fine. If your not wanting any AC or future proofing, then the 826L is a good option.
-
saying i get the 826L. what will ido with my 655

are you positive that getting this router will solve my connectivity issues
is there any possibility that it is the isp? also can utorrent create an issue for wireless connectivity?

one last question for you :P
I not that best pleased that I have to buy a new router as I bought this router new two years ago. It had good reviews with WIFI so I can't understand why it can't cope with several WIFI connections. I have not moved house since buying the router so I can't understand why in the pass few months the wireless connectivity has worsened gradually. Can you give any answers?
I really appreciate your help :)
