Make 880L the Master Browser
« on: October 21, 2017, 02:29:23 AM »

Is there a way to make the 880L the master browser? Windows 10 Creators Update has butchered network browsing. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. A computer may appear, may not appear, or can disappear. I would like to make the router take over that function, but I can't find anything in the settings to do that.

  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.

Do other devices appear in the Networking section of Windows 7?
If other devices appear stable in Windows 7 and not in Windows 10, this maybe a Windows 10 issue.

Are you using reserved IP addresses for your PCs and devices?
Do you have a local domain name set ON the router which is the same as your workgroup name on the PCs?
Are all PCs set for the same workgroup name?

These are all Windows 10 systems, the IP addresses are assigned dynamically, and all are assigned the same workgroup name.. This problem of not seeing some computers on the File Explorer network list started when the "original" Creators Update came out last spring. I had no problem before that. There are many posts across the net mentioning this issue and Microsoft has done nothing to fix it yet. Usually the first computer that is turned on gets assigned as the "master browser". It keeps tabs on any computers that come on later. If that first system is shut down, the next system is supposed to take over as the master browser. Somehow this is not happening properly. From what I have experienced, it seems that if the master browser computer goes into sleep mode and the second computer picks up the active systems, when the first system comes back on line, the second computer may not pick this up. If have seen at times that a computer is not even listed in its own Network list. There is usually one workaround where you enter the nae of the computer (\\<computer name>) on the address line of the Network section of File Explorer and it then gets picked up.
I normally do not leave my systems on all the time. There is another workaround using a router which some people have used with great success because the router is always on. They plug a USB flash drive in the router and set the router up as the master browser. This is why I am interested in getting my 880L set up as the master browser.

I would try either using Reserved IP addresses for each PC on the router or set up static IP addresses out side of the routers IP address pool on each PC to see if the problem continues.

You might try disabling any power management features on the PCs network adapter cards as well and see if this might help.

Not sure if D-Link supports Master Browser from a router perspective. You might phone contact them on the phone and ask...
I would also contact MS about this issue as well since they seem to have introduced this issue after all had been working before this update.

Thanks Furry,

I am not sure what I will do at this point. I might try calling D-Link. Microsoft is well aware of this problem. You might want to browse through this thread:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/1add7d03-2bc0-4d1e-9248-fef090d9ba0e/anyone-else-notice-the-network-issues-with-windows-10-creators-edition?forum=win10it****etworking

This has been ongoing since April. I don't know if MS will ever fix it. There is a good explanation in that thread of what is going on by "NoneAndOne" dated Sep 24th. People have tried all kinds of workarounds. Some work, most don't. Making the router the master browser seems the best solution. Another possibility is starting my Synology NAS first and maybe that will be picked up as the master browser. Hopefully someone will come up with an easy solution.

That is not my problem. I was not getting that type of error. Other computers just may not appear in the network list of the computer I was on. The only fix that worked for me was to enter the UNC name (\\<acomputer>) of the computer in the address line of File Explorer's network section. I have to do this every day. All my systems have the same login and they were able to see each other without any problems before the initial Creators Update (v1703). It has only been since that update came out that this issue has arisen. The newest version of Windows 10 (v1709) that was just release has not corrected it and in some cases has made it worse. I have sent D-Link an e-mail asking if setting up the 880L as the master browser is possible. I will post their response when I receive it.

I heard from D-Link. They said there is no such capability on the DIR-880L.

I presume D-Link routers don't support that since there home class routers.
