DIR-880L needs function to re-index external hdd contents
« on: May 22, 2015, 03:22:36 AM »

Hi

Model Name: DIR-880L   Hardware Version: A1   Firmware Version: 1.03WW

I'd like to know how to "manually" re- index the content of the external HDD plugged into the usb port.
When I connected my external hdd to the router, it showed everything in the hdd fine.
However, when I re-structured and added some more files in the hdd with my PC and re-connected the hdd to the router, my phone/tablet/pc will not display updated file contents but displays the original file contents and when I try to open the file, it won't open because the file is actually not located there.

I've disconnected the HDD several times from the router, no luck.
I've turned off and on the router several times, no luck.
In router setting page, there is no function to re-index the content of the hdd..

Anyone else has this problem??

Also, can anyone connect to the ext hdd using SAMBA? I can connect fine in Windows 8.1 but I just can't connect to the ext hdd with my android phone or tablet. Tried more than 10 different file explorer but it just won't connect or see the router. So I'm connecting to the ext hdd with my android phone using UPnP Media Server only.

Thanks

Router:
Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
  Link> >FW Update Process

You should be able to kick of a router reboot under Maintenance/System/Reboot while the USB drive is connected and then it should re-index the drive.
What format is the drive using? NTFS is recommended.

How to map a USB Drive to your PC without using Shareport software
Not sure about Android products and what they support and how they operate on network shares. You might ask the Mfr for help and support on those devices.

HI

What region are you located?
-> I'm located in New Zealand

Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
-> PC/Tablet/Phone are connected wirelessly. TV is wired

Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
-> I will try factory reset. New firmware was installed when I first used.

Ok...we recommend following the FW update process to ensure a clean installation of the FW. Set up the router once more from scratch after the last FW update. Once it's all set up, then save a new config file for back up just in case.

Carried out factory reset and configured from the scratch without loading the old configuration but my DLNA programs still showing me old file & folder structures...unbelivable. Not sure what to do now honestly

Can you check the DLNA files with a difference PC to see if the same is listed?

The same thing for me with re-indexing. I've tried rebooting, i've let the HDD disconnected from the router for 24 hours etc, nothing works.

I have an open ticket with dlink support on this topic for more than a month, no answer yet :)

Did you contact them via email or phone? We recommend contacting D-Link support by phone...

I thought I was subscribed to this thread, turns out I wasn't.

No, I didn't try calling them, I have open tickets, maybe they show up somewhere :D

Anyway, after a month and a couple of power losses (not my fault), the deleted files do not show up anymore in the list, so I am ok.

The worst part is that on the room that is on top of the one with the router, I have only one line of Wi-Fi on one phone, and on the other I cannot connect to the router. The roof of the room with the router is concrete and reinforced with steel, but the signal shouldn't take such a hit. I cannot move around the router very much, so I think I should install some signal repeaters. I thought they would not be necessary with this router, but here I am.

Seems like a power cycle is all thats needed.

As for your wifi, ya if you have concrete and metal re-bar in the mix, it's not good. You might try adding some Power Line devices to get connections from downstairs to upstairs if this is an option and you on the same circuit. Would be better than trying to extend or repeat WiFi signals thru the concrete.  ::)

Yes, I meant powerline adapters, sorry for the mistake.

That would be the solution, I guess...

Well you could use PLs to get connection from downstairs to up stairs and install a GB switch and a 2ndary wireless AP.  ;)

I thought this router would be enough for a house of 120 square meters :)

I stand corrected about the deleted files on the router, I found some, they are about 6 weeks old (some episodes in a TV show), so a "manual" reindexing would be nice.

If concrete and re-bar was not involved.  ::)
