I hope that CenturyLink (how many times have they changed their name lol?) doesn't eventually go that route, otherwise my area will go from a duopoly to a monopoly and thus TWC will make my $40/month bill, $60/month or worse.

It will most likely be futile but worth a try anyways as purchasing a modem is most likely not an option as I use them for VoIP service.

You might check on Motorola, I think they have some cable modems with VoIP options...
Ya, I don't like all the fees and such. Sometimes I feel like the ISP are trying to nickel and dime everyone like banks do. >:(

If there was some actual competition they could not get away with nickel and dimming us. I checked their approved cable modem list and there are no modems VoIP capable listed.
EDIT: It sounds like If you get a modem for Internet and just use theirs for phone service you don't get charged the fee.

Just got that lovely modem fee postcard from TWC, going to pick up a cheap used modem off of Amazon.

Get you a Motorola SB 6141, good modems. If you have phone service with TWC, I might call Motorola and ask them to see which phone modem might work with TWC. They have some voice modems, just not sure which ones would work. Let us know what you get.

I can continue to use their modem for just VoIP and not be charged the fee, so no worries about having to get a modem that does VoIP.
It looks nice but since I plan to cancel my Internet service with TWC after I graduate next year and go back to using my neighbor's wireless (using my Raspberry Pi as a router) as they keep on increasing my bill. It's not worth it to me to spend around $100+ on a modem. I'm probably going to pick up the SB5101U.

Well after talking with TWC for a couple of days they just called back tonight and said that they would lower my bill by $9.00 (will still tack on the 3.95.) Don't know how extensive their note records are, I'm tempted to buy that modem to get the full $9.00 net savings. :)

The idea of placing the router itself in the attic isn't a good idea if your attic gets hot in the summer. You could run some coax to antennas in the attic BUT at 2.4 GHz dB losses per 100 feet are quite high, so you need thick coax to minimize losses.

High-Speed Wireless and Wired LAN
The DAP-1665 features the latest 802.11ac wireless technology, capable of delivering combined speeds of up to 1200 Mbps over two bands. Use the 2.4 GHz band’s 300 Mbps for web surfing, email and chat, while simultaneously using the lower-interference 5 GHz band's 867 Mbps for network bridging, downloading, video streaming and file transfers. For wired connections, the Gigabit LAN port enables wired data speeds of up to 1000 Mbps, meaning that Gigabit-compatible wired devices can also benefit from the high speeds of wireless AC.
Versatile Operation Modes
The DAP-1665 can be configured to operate in several modes. Access Point mode allows the device to act as a central hub for wireless users, giving them access to an existing wired network. Bridge-mode creates a high-speed wireless link between two wired networks (LANs), alleviating the need to install additional network cabling. Repeater mode extends wireless coverage of an existing wireless network to cover “dead” spots and reach farther into a business environment. Bridge mode with AP adds the functionality of a wireless access point to a bridged network, so wireless clients can access resources on both networks. Wireless Client mode is available to enable the DAP-1665 to connect to another access point and provide network and Internet access to a remote wired device such as a gaming console or media center.
