2890AL Router disconnects and fails to reconnect
« on: February 15, 2014, 04:11:36 PM »

Hello,

For the last week or so my 2890AL router will randomly disconnect from the internet and won't reconnect, or at least appears to attempt to reconnect but fails continuously.

I've updated to the latest firmware AU_1.02.04. I'm based in Australia and my connection is ADSL2+. My ISP has done a line test and couldn't see anything wrong.

Usefully, I set up syslogging and below is an excerpt for when the modem disconnects, at 07:34:53. Advice would be appreciated!

Re: 2890AL Router disconnects and fails to reconnect

Link>Welcome!

  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
FW Update Process
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Hello,

I will answer as best I can.

- I have four devices connected wirelessly and three devices connected wired. Not all devices are on at the same time.
- Factory reset has been performed, yes.
- Factory reset was performed after the firmware update.
- This issue was occurring prior to the firmware update as well. I've had the modem for 2 months. Despite poor wireless performance, the modem performed without issue during this time.

- MTU was double checked with ISP and was correctly set to 1492 in the modem settings.
- Under PPPoE, "Always On" was enabled.

- SSID was changed to a custom name.
- I enabled both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, mixed on both. On a side note, prior to this problem occurring, I would witness random dropped pings when pinging 192.168.1.1 continuously, via both 2.4 and 5Ghz wireless connection. When the problem started and the modem would disconnect, I experienced little to no dropped pings.
- Channel width was set to Auto.
- Channel was set to 5 for 2.4Ghz. 5Ghz was left at default.
- Security mode was set to WPA2 for both frequencies.
- No cordless house phones, I have naked DSL. No phones apart from my iPhone. No back to base alarms.
- Plenty of wifi routers in the area, annoyingly - I'm not convinced this is related to my wireless connections though. Firstly, the wireless connectivity remains unchanged (or gets better) after the modem disconnects and secondly, I witnessed the disconnection when wifi was off as well.
- The advanced wireless settings were unchanged apart from the frequency strength which I set to 'low' on both frequencies.

I'd like to know what is actually happening to result in the following messages, or simply an explanation into what these messages mean. I googled and found related information here and there but nothing to solidify my understanding. What is the dnsmasq, SIGTERM? Why would dnsmasq exit and from what? What does it mean that no upstream servers are configured? I presume that whatever the dnsmasq is doing is resulting the the PPP connection to be terminated?

Seems like this could be a signal on the phone lines as maybe the modem is not acquiring proper signal on the DSL line.

You might have the ISP physically check the phone lines and signals. Ask them to review there connection logs during this time frame when you notice the modem not working.
