AC Speeds and benchmark with my phone
« on: February 09, 2015, 03:40:28 AM »

In order to avoid opening a new topic, as it would be the same title: I have a 100Mbps internet connection, and for the 5Ghz band I've selected Mixed n/ac, ch 48.

When I try a benchmark with my phone (Galaxy S4 - supports ac), as Speedtest.net, I achieve 69 mbps dl / 97 mbps upload. Why not 9x/9x? The phone is connected to the 5GHz wifi network, and is about 50cm from the router, on the same desk.

If I try the benchmark on my PC (ethernet), the result is 94/95 mbps download/upload.  Shouldn't I have the same speed on the phone? I know it''s wifi vs ethernet, but it's ac :)

Its not really recommended to speed test via WiFi due to many variables that can cause inaccurate results....Mfr wireless device design and support will be a factor.  We don't recommend speed testing over WiFi as a default test due to issues like this and many other factors and variables that lead to inaccurate results. Testing over wired LAN cables for default speed tests is preferred.

I've just realised that I cannot properly benchmark data transfers to my phone via wifi standard ac if I only have mechanical HDDs in my computer, they cannot reach hundreds of MB/s. With SSD it would be another matter.

Sorry :)

Thats ok. Questions are always worth asking. We learn as we go.

Like I said, I prefer to test wired connections. However you can test wireless speeds. I recommend have a wired PC connected to the router and have a wireless PC or Laptop that you can use to check speeds on the LAN side. Again the wireless adapter and devices will be dependent upon what they are designed to do and support so take what you see with a grain of salt as you test sending and copying files back and forth. Use 100, 1Gb and 4Gb files to sample test with.

For ISP speed testing, as long as the wired speed tests are good, you'll be find on the wireless side if there isn't any interferences.

Enjoy.
