Upgrade fails every time. Did a factory reset before the upgrade to see if that would help. The router ****ped out on me last week and I was hoping this would fix it. It locks up and starts rebooting a few minutes after I finish setting it up. Perhaps when all my devices start connecting?

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

How is the update failing? Are you seeing a message?
You are wired LAN cable connected to the router correct?
Are you using IE or FF with all browser add-ons and PC security disabled while you upload the .bin file?
You are extracting the .bin file from the .zip file correct?

Please follow the FW Update Process

North America region, A1 hardware version.

I was getting an Upgrade failed message. Using a direct ethernet connection to the router. Using Chrome browser and yes I extracted the bin from the zip.

I tried twice, and got the Upgrade failed message. I did a reset through the Admin page and it failed again. I held down the reset button on the back and this time it said the Upgrade worked. I was able to briefly connect and saw that it still said version 1.01. Then it kept locking up and rebooting. I got on the phone with support and while I was on hold it pressed the reset button again. I was able to connect, and after two more tries with tech support on the phone I was able to get the firmware upgraded. Had to the turn the router on and off a couple times before I was able to get connected to it. Then it seemed to be working and tech support hung up. I started doing some configuration and it eventually went into a boot loop. I watch the lights all turn blue, then after a couple seconds they all turn off, and then the power button goes orange to blue, etc. and it just kept doing that. I pressed the reset button again, was able to go through the wizard and get the basics set up and after a couple minutes it went into the boot loop again.

I was out of time so I haven't called tech support back, but so far, the 880L sucks. I have spent way more time messing with it than my DIR-655.

I recommend NOT using Chrome as it's been known to not work right when upgrading FW with routers and can cause the router to become bricked.

I just loaded mine this evening however I didn't use Chrome and I never do.

I recommend using IE or FF only for any FW updates . Be sure to disable all browser add-ons and disable any 3rd party PC security programs while doing FW updates. Disconnect all devices or turn them OFF. Just use one wired LAN PC connected to the router.

Please follow this and see if you can get the recovery screen and load the v1.02 B13 .bin file you downloaded using IE or FF only. DO NOT USE Chrome!
 Emergency Recovery Mode

Please follow this for doing all future updates:  FW Update Process

Let us know if the recovery mode fails or works.

Why is it that the Beta is NA Region Only anyways?

I am sure I would love some of the fixes as well :) (EU Region)

Each region handles there own FW development and updates. NA has specific rules and regulations governed by federal government policies.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

I followed the Emergency recovery mode instructions and was able to reflash the firmware. I tried uploading my previous configuration and it started the reboot cycle again. I did a reset and manually configured the basic settings. I have been slowly customizing it one thing at a time. So far so good. Thanks for the help.

Yes, after doing the FW update or factory reset, DO not load the old saved config file. Once you have applied the FW and factory reset the router and set it up from scratch, then re-save a new config to file at this point.

Worked good for a while but as soon as everyone came home and all their phones and laptops connected it locked up. I turned it off, waited ten seconds, turned it on. Lasted 5 minutes before it locked up again. I'm back on the DIR-655 for now. Going to call D-Link and RMA this piece of junk.

I would factory reset the router, re-load the v1.02 FW, factory reset once more then set up from scratch. DO NOT LOAD ANY SAVED CONFIG FILES.

  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many? Use v3, its free.

Keep us posted.

Nah, I reset it after I loaded that saved config file. That should take care of the issue. Since it doesn't, it tells me the router is faulty. I think this is related to the DHCP problem that somebody else was having trouble with. It works fine until enough devices connect that cause it to lock up.
