Title: DNS-323 iTunes Server w/ iTunes 10
Post by: dalesum on September 02, 2010, 06:50:44 AM
Word is starting to hit the apple forums that the iTunes server is no longer being detected with a NAS device in iTunes 10.  I just ordered one on newegg yesterday and I'm a bit concerned since this was my main reason for purchasing one.

Here's the link to the apple forums about the discussion.

I can confirm after upgrading to Itunes 10 I can only see the DNS323 listed and its playlists but they are all empty  :( D-Link May have to come out with a firmware patch or Apple will have to patch Itunes 10

Same here, just upgraded iTunes and while it says loading the NAS list, it appears empty.

Would be nice to see apple fix this, i have a feeling its' going to be left up to the vendors to resolve.

Upgraded one machine last night to iTunes 10 and noticed my DNS-323 visable but not connecting.  Figured I'd leave other machines on older iTunes and all would be well...this is not the case!  Might try disconnecting the NAS from iTunes on the iTunes 10 machine to see if this clears things up across the network. >:(

Has anyone tried the Firefly App instead?

Yes. That's what I use, same results.

I was going to try and install a new Firefly package from the Firefly website. It appears the last "stable" nightly build was in May 2007, and the last unstable "cutting edge" nightly was in October 2007.

I don't think this will be fixed anytime soon.

Someone over at the apple forums stated that their mt-daapd rewrite (forked-daapd) works with iTunes 10, but I can't confirm or deny because there's no port of the software for the DNS-323. It's not compiled, and I'm not smart or experienced enough to even try to make it work.

A project for someone that's capable. You'd be the hero of a lot of people, heh.

I thought it was just me.  I updated Itunes to 10 just before I enabled the Itunes server for the first time and thought I was doing something wrong.  Now that I know it is the new version of Itunes I am reverting to 9.2.1.  See link below.

Title: Thank God! I'm not crazy & iTunes version release Notes
Post by: BDX on September 06, 2010, 10:22:51 AM
You guys just restored my sanity and faith in the on line community.

I was going nutz, I had installed TuneUp 2010 to straighten out some registry issues and then the next night updated my laptop to iTunes 10.0....pfffffft my 323's music disappears..I spent like 4 hours checking permissions, did a restore from previous night and crap no luck.

Fortunately I kept my gaming machine at 9.2.x and its fine. I was looking at the release notes for iTunes on Wiki and, naturally there is no mention of anything that had to do with Home Share or file format security. I'll have some time to call Apple tomorrow and make an inquiry.

Apple did something in this release...I'm not so sure this entirely DLinks issue.

Title: Two Ideas
Post by: BDX on September 06, 2010, 10:53:55 AM
IDEA#1 - has anyone tried making the 323 their default itunes location by mapping it as a network drive and saving or purchasing a song to it to see if iTunes will:

1) recognize it as a valid "save to" storage location, the DNS may not let this happen

2) if it does save to that location does it then see that song on the play list?

If sucessful that would indicate that v10 is saving files in a new storage format and its not the DNS's issue with the way its iTunes share server is presenting the files.

IDEA#2 - I'm also tempted to rename my iTunes folder on the DNS, then copy a v10 library to the DNS as the iTunes folder share it and see if iTunes sees the new v10 library on my laptop.

I would bet id it were possible to "authorize" the DNS as a valid account, iTunes would allow it.

Just a few random thoughts

I have the same problems all have described here regarding using the DNS iTunes server feature. So I went a different route and tried connecting it as a share drive. If I go to files and add to library from any music files on the DNS. I am welcomed with the spinning beach ball of death every time. After a while it eventually finishes locating the file and it plays the song. then if I quit iTunes and reload again to play the file, it does the same thing all over again. But just yesterday I tried ejecting the DNS323 drive from shared drive on my Mac first, then started iTunes, selected a song file from music library and no spinning beach ball of death, everything works fine. iTunes is working fine recognizing the DNS323 as a share drive without any loading problems only if I have the drive disconnected from shared, then starting up iTunes. Has anyone else gotten this?

I've always managed to hold down shift while launching iTunes and selecting a folder on the NAS to store the library. I found it painfully slow to use that way though. Much better to have the library on the local machine and just drag your music/media to iTunes and let it reference them from the NAS.

Yes, and yes.  We have our iTunes 10 pointed to the media folder on the 323 and it generally works.  We have noticed however that if the same machine has heavy traffic to the NAS drive for other purposes, the music sometimes doesn't play out the speaker (the equalizer bars bounce around as if they are playing the music, just no sound).  Network traffic reduced, music plays consistently.  Strange.

It is no problem to map any NAS folder as a drive in Windows Explorer so iTunes just sees "[drive letter]:\[folder]" instead of "[network server]\\[network path]". This works fine.
I even managed to access the folder via VPN - I did this with an AVM 7170 and used an UMTS mobile phone for internet connection.

The Bonjour server just shared the files for streaming - if Apple thinks to make it harder for their customers to use the feature ... well ... at this point I agree with gunrunnerjohn :) .

Title: iTunes 10.0.1 Update fixes Re: DNS-323 iTunes Server w/ iTunes 10
Post by: Stork on September 25, 2010, 08:51:13 AM
iTunes update 10.0.1 is out and is reported to fix the compatibility problem with mt-daapd/FireFire.

• Addresses an issue where the iTunes library and playlists appear empty.
• Resolves an issue that created an incompatibility with some third-party shared libraries.

iTunes 10.0.1 can be downloaded from iTunes' update function or from here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1103 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1103)

Check it and report your sucess or any problems.

Hum...

I can still see the NAS,  however after a minute or so it just reverts back to my library...just as it has been.  Actually just updated all machines as well and still no luck...I had stopped updating to iTunes 10 after the 1st machine after seeing the NAS issue.

I'll probably start simple, rebooting all machines, and see what happens.

UPDATE:
Rebooted the NAS and we're back in business!!!

I did find a workaround but it was so heinous in nature i just didnt bother trying to post it..however
10.0.1 Fixes Untitled & Empty Play List, Okie dokie ;)

Addendum: You know, it almost seems to work BETTER under 10.0.1...but once then again maybe I'm just glad to have my NAS feeding my music again...

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the point of the iTunes server in the 323? I enabled it once, and saw it in iTunes, but from what I can remember what you could do with the media on it at that point was pretty much nothing. I.e you couldn't add music from it to your iPod. I think possibly all you could do was play the music?
Title: Re: DNS-323 iTunes Server w/ iTunes 10
Post by: HSishi on October 04, 2010, 01:03:30 PM
Correct. The iTunes server in the DNS-323 is just a streaming server for iTunes clients (PC, MAC ...). If you want to add the music itself to your iPod etc., you have to manually add it to your library.

You do NOT have to copy it into your "Mediathek" folder (I have no idea how Apple calls this folder outside of Germany).

I'm just trying to figure out what the itunes server is for. I currently have all my music stored on my DNS-323 in the Music folder. I also have the library files stored on the DNS-323 (We have five users in the house). I then share this folder on the DNS-323 on each computer/user as the M: drive and can access the music from itunes on any computer in the house. I can add/remove/play music from itunes on any computer in the house. As a note I do not have any DRM songs in my collection. I'm not sure if this makes a difference.

So if anyone could explain what I am missing by not using the itunes server I would be grateful.

When you enable the iTunes server of the NAS, the NAS appears in iTunes as a server. From there you can play the content. I never use it either and as you say, you don't have to use it to play the music back through iTunes anyway. I guess the advantage is you don't need any library files containing references to the content stored on the NAS as it is simply streamed directly from it. Good for playing back, but you can't manage the library that way.

I found iTunes unusably slow when the library files were stored on the NAS. I gave up in the end and stored them locally.

Now, it's not really clear to me, so I'll ask it here:

With iTunes Server enabled on the 323, would one be able to stream the songs in it on an iPhone with Apple Remote installed?

Is there any update on this? I miss my old music which is sitting on my NAS! My iTunes 10 isn't detecting my iTunes server anymore. I tried refreshing the iTunes server in the DNS323 > Advanced.

why should apple fix anything for D-link?
D-link should be the ones fixing their snail ware NAS to iTunes standards and while they are doing that maybe find a way to boast the transfers speeds from 20mbs to something in the real world time of a usb2.0 cable then they would only be a little behind the transfer speeds of usb3.0......

I am so sorry I bought one of these desk clutters

I turned off the iTunes server a while ago and have just tried switching it back on, but my local iTunes doesn't see a server.

Does anyone know if this has been broken again by Apple? My iTunes version is 10.2.2.12 presently. It was working previously in 10.1

Woohoo!  I just figured out, after many hours of searching the Internet, why my D-Link 323 wasn't showing in ITunes as a Shared device.

Do not select "Root" in the itunes SERVER configuration page.

I had to point directly to my music folder "called MP3" in Volume_1 and it popped up right away.
(Volume_1/Shared Data/Music/MP3)

I had also tried "Shared Data" but it didn't work.  Maybe it didn't like the other type of file/extension.  ???

Hope it fixes your problems too.

I'm having problems with the iTunes server as well.  I'm running Windows XP on a laptop over wireless G or one gigabit connection (hard wired).  I have 1.10 firmware, latest beta version and iTunes version 10.4.1.10.

When I sync the iTunes server on the NAS to only one subfolder of music it sees it just fine such as

\\DLINK\MEDIA\MUSIC\2PAC

If I try the entire MUSIC folder (has 9,233 files with 44 GB) it will not sync.  It tries at first to start, but it doesn't catch even though I am on the hard wire and wait a couple hours.

\\DLINK\MEDIA\MUSIC\

Is it just too many files?

I recently updated iTunes (Windows) to version 10.6.0.40 and now it works with the "iTunes Server" feature of my NetGear DNS-323.  With 10.5 iTunes would briefly flash the contents of my "nas" under "SHARED" but then the focus would switch back to "LIBRARY->Music".  Now with 10.6.0.40 the focus will stay on my "nas" under "SHARED" and I can play music through this share.  FYI, my DNS-323 is running v1.10 firmware.

I found for me it works if the size of the files in the iTunes share folder are less than 5.0 GB.  If I go over 5.0GB then it will only show up in my iTunes for a minute and disappear.

I'm running Windows XP over a wireless N network.  I haven't tried it wired yet because I mostly am wireless.

Gordon, what is the size of the share folder you have in your iTunes share folder on your DNS?
