Title: DIR-506L SharePort Go
Post by: holmes4 on September 26, 2012, 08:06:57 AM
The new DIR-506L SharePort Go would appear, based on D-Link's product description, to have similar functionality to the DIR-505 except that it has a rechargeable battery instead of plugging in directly. In reality, the products operate very differently and I found the DIR-506L to be effectively unusable. My Amazon review is here (http://www.amazon.com/review/R14EFCB5137GOL/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm).

That's not an update - it's the same FW that my DIR-506L shipped with.  What is new is that they posted it, along with an updated QuickStart guide. Last week no firmware at all was shown there. The full manual is still missing and the problems I reported still exist.

I would contact DLink support, maybe level 2?

I intend to contact Dlink support - I have been traveling a lot and have not had the time to sit down with a phone and the DIR-506L. My past experience with Dlink support has been mixed - we shall see.

Spent an hour on the phone with D-Link support. I was able to get an Ethernet connection to work, but I had to do so manually - the QRS app still did not work, and the wizard didn't either. Better news on accessing a USB flash drive - I did eventually manage that.  I updated my Amazon review and will do so again when I get more information.

After I hung up with support a lightbulb went on in my head and I realized what the problem was - the wizards don't deal well with settings that match what was already established. I have completely rewritten my Amazon review accordingly, and it should suffice as a user guide in lieu of the manual D-Link hasn't put out yet.

Yep - just posted. Publication date of September 26, at least a week after the product went on sale.  Crazy...

It turns out I was mistaken in my conclusion that the wizards work if you change the information from what was stored before - they don't. I found that choosing "Manual Setup" in the Admin panel is actually easier and faster than using the wizards, and it always works.  I recommend doing a manual setup of the Wireless aspect first, choosing an SSID, security and password of your own. This will stick and you can have all your devices use it.  Then when you are at a new location, run Manual Setup for Internet to select either WiFi Hotspot or DHCP (for Ethernet), as needed.

Glad you got it working for you.

Enjoy.

Heavy sigh - I see D-Link continues to release incremental improved hardware (508L, 505L) rather than fix the firmware for existing products.
