For "N" mode 300Mbps(40Mhz channel, short GI) equals real world 100Mbps as a best case scenario, sitting next to the router(independent testing has shown). 45-100 is what testing by various labs have shown to be the norm(some rare cases slightly more, depending on the router/AP). That's OK, with "G" mode, testing shows 22Mbps is Very, VERY good. So much for cutting my Gigabit cord! :(

"N" mode final only supports AES, the others are too slow.

I guess that is why my AP only has a 100Mbit connection as shown by my D-Link switch. :'(

Surf wise, after I crossed over 15-20Mbits, I really can't tell the difference anyhow, but at least they could market products for real world and tell us the TRUE speed. ???

"N" mode with 40Mhz channels actually is worse when you start getting away from the AP, the transfer rates are worse then a single 20Mhz channel alone. But that is for weak signals, which, thus far on my acre I don't worry about. By Android maxes at 12Mbps x 5Mbps in 72Mbps "N" mode. Guess I know why. :-\

Found some 2 watt amps for "N" mode, poor neighbors! :o

This splains a lot, I am gonna go get me a 6G phone at lunch here in a while! :o

You running 2.4 or 5Ghz?

Been using my 825 as an AP at 5Ghz only. Thats in the living room and I have a DGL-4500 in the office as an AP at 5Ghz only too.

I do notice that my 657 thats the host router set up for N only, I get 130-170 on my Mac Book Pro and the xbox slim down stairs only gets 65Mb connections. I guess thats the max for the slim.

Need to do some testing on 5Ghz and see what I get on the down. Mostly I see 9-10Mb on the up swing to my server on the GB network.

Xbox Slim is indeed maxed at 65, if you enable short GI, it is hit and miss connection wise, mostly miss. Fought that one for a while.

I am using 2.4Ghz. Used to use 5Ghz for video, but when we moved, the router and the video equipment  are only 10 feet apart now so I went with Cat 6 and turned 5Ghz off.

170! wow! :o Everything I read said just over a 100Mbps throughput was max, but the testing was a couple of years old too. They did mention that the stuff seemed to get faster the more you pay. They had some "N" stuff that was doing 45Mbps throughput and some stuff by the same company that was above 100Mbps throughput. But the connections all registered at 300Mbps per the OS/firmware.

Is the Mac 5Ghz? Like a dummy I sold my Sony Vaio that had built in 5Ghz, when I was out of work.

I am starting to wonder about those 1 watt AP's, might have to do some file transfers using them and the DIR-825 for comparison instead of internet. My ping time is 16 vs 8 also using wireless, I would expect an increase, but not that much. More testing ;) Might end up with a good dual channel amp instead of those 2 AP's. Then again my cat 6 arrived today, that might help too. ???

Just tired of the marketing hype, the 4G phone in my pocket has the 4G light lit, but the speed is nowhere close to the what they say I should get. Even though if I remember right, 4G was supposed to be 100Mbps. They claim I am getting 7.2, but is really more like 3x1 or the 1100 watt stereos that only put out 20 watts on a scope(sent 3 surround sound stereos back untill I found one that would actually do what it said), now WiFi too. Been watching some of these newer cars that claim 35Mpg and get 400 horsepower, I guess I will have to test drive one before I can add them to the list!

170Mbps Wireless, is that the connection speed or the transfer speed? 2.4 or 5?

Just found some 5Ghz high power adapters for laptops, 2 watts at 5Ghz with a -95Dbm reciever sensitivity, it needs 2 usb ports to power it, but me thinks 2 watts is a little much at 5Ghz :o  My eyes may be old and tired, but they still work fine, 2 watts in the face at 5Ghz may not be healthy........

Got off my butt last night and installed Inssider along with a high sensitivity/power WiFi adapter on my desktop/Windozes box.

Seems over half of my neighbors have their SSID's turned off. I thought I was living in the country, guess not! My average s/n ratio is 25Db with a 1 watt router 10 feet away, that's a LOT of noise and almost as bad as my old neighborhood!

That splains why my WiFi transfer speed bytes! No less then 4 other routers on channel 1 when a site survey showed NONE! The entire 2.4 band looks that way!

Can you recommend a good 5ghz laptop adapter?

Yes...I'm sure you already know that 5Ghz works best in line of site...maybe one wall in the middle. Why I set up one 5Ghz AP in my office at one end of the house and another, the 825 in my living room towards the other end. I use the same SSID for both.
