Radio randomly disappears on all devices simultaneously
« on: February 09, 2016, 12:43:50 PM »

Trying to understand what causes the radio to disappear randomly. We have maybe 10 wireless devices connected. The signal is very strong and then completely disappears but there are no issues with the hardwired connections.

I am using Smart Connect. Loaded the latest beta firmware and also tried the automatic reboot daily and it's still happening. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?

It's my wife and daughter that are mostly affected as they are on phones or Kindles most of the time. They'll complain that their connection disappears briefly and I happened to be on my phone the other day when I saw the signal completely disappear and then come back a few seconds later.

Although the signal is pretty strong, I am planning on moving it to another location in the house in the next week or two but my gut says that's not going to fix this problem. There are 9 houses in our neighborhood and we're not very close together so I don't think congestion is a problem but I'll admit I'm not as knowledgeable about troubleshooting wireless as I'd like to be and I suppose there could be something going on there that I'm not seeing.

ink>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
  Link> >FW Update Process

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

What security mode are you using while SC is enabled?
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Turn off ALL wireless devices accept for one device and test. Can be the ones effected or a different device. Graduate adding devices till you see something?
Then test with SC disabled.

I have not had time to do any additional troubleshooting, but, I did move the router from our basement to my first floor office to get better coverage on our second floor. We had a decent signal on the first floor prior to the move even though the first floor is where all the issues occurred.

Since the move, I've not had any complaints from my wife or daughter about the signal dropping off. Perhaps moving it further away from all of the electronics still in the basement (the cable modem, the digital phone modem and the Netgear switch) has something to do with it. Awfully coincidental.

I'm also wondering if perhaps moving it to the first floor and having an even stronger signal means it's less susceptible to interference from other neighborhood routers?

If the problem reappears my next step will be a factory reset with settings from scratch. Until then, I'm just going to leave it alone.

Ya, basement isn't a good place for wifi, needs to be on the main floor at least. Hope it keeps working better for you.

ENjoy.  ;)

Probably not.  I have a ton of neighbors and I don't see any interference...

I recently moved a 2nd router within 3feet of my main router - and had interference issues. Moving it back to 5 feet away solved the problem.

Ya anything with in 3 feet isn't good. Farther away the better.  ;D
