2.4 ghz clients failing to connect to internet?
« on: November 16, 2012, 06:46:16 PM »

I've had my DIR-865L for over a month now, and just started having a very odd problem. My 5 ghz clients are able to connect to the internet without issue, but my 2.4 ghz clients are timing out on DNS requests.

To complicate issues, those same 2.4 ghz clients have no problem pulling up the router admin page, so I know the wireless connection is working.

I've tried disabling the router DNS relay option, upgrading to the 1.03 firmware, and resetting to factory defaults and re-configuring. The only thing that helps is that 2.4 ghz clients can connect for a short while after the router reboots, then stop working again.

I'm really at a loss for what's going on.

Link>Welcome!

What region are you located?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.

Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.

What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.

I'm in the US, I've got comcast as my ISP via cable with a motorola SB6121 standalone modem.

From your tips, it looked like you're hinting at it being a wireless connection issue, which seems reasonable given that 5ghz works fine.

I've got a bunch of neighbors with 2.4ghz routers, since I live downtown. I downloaded the InSSIDer tool you recommended, and pushed my router from channel 9 to 10 to find a slightly clearer bit of bandwidth. It helped a little.

My laundry list of 2.4 ghz issue:

1) I've got 2 devices that simply won't connect at all. A sony dash (actually a rebranded chumby device), and an acer aspire one. Tried all the options for wireless/auth settings, nothing worked. I've still got my old DIR-655 active (on channel 5) so that they can connect to the internet.
2) On my desktop, the built in dell wireless card consistently gets >3000ms pings to the 2.4 ghz network. I've also got a USB D-Link DWA-610 adapter which I usually use to connect on the 5ghz band. That same USB adapter gets 1ms pings when I connect on the 2.4 ghz band.
3) The most annoying one is the XBox 360 downstairs, which claims it can connect to the 2.4 ghz network, but fails at connecting to the internet.

Watching that InSSIDer graph, the odd thing I'm seeing is that the DIR-865L (named Armitage) has the signal strength bounce back and forth from -40 db to -95 about once a second.

http://sdrv.ms/SUNDiT

Per your other suggestions, I've got all the extra features (like QoS) disabled, and auth setup for WPA2/AES only. As far as I know, I don't have anything else that transmits on 2.4 ghz, like a cordless phone.

If there mostly using up the channels then your probably encountering WiFi congestion. You might try changing the power out put of the radios from High to medium. I would try using channel 11 if it's open. Not sure if this will help with the interferences.

If 5ghz is working well and 2.4Ghz isn't, any chance you can get all devices on to the 5Ghz band? You might need to upgrade those devices that have USB ports to a 5Ghz USB adapter. For PCs and Laptops with USB or LAN only ports, you could get a DAP-1533 and use that as a 5Ghz bridge. Connecting the wired LAN devices to it. For USB devices, you could use the DWA-160 or the new DWA-182 thats supposed to be a good match to the 865L.

For xbox, I highly recommend using wired LAN cable for all gaming, however is some cases I know thats not feasable. I would recommend connecting a DAP-1533 to it and then wired LAN from the xbox to the DAP and then you'll connect the DAP wireless bridge to the 865.

I think your 2.4Ghz band is a bit congested and causing some interfernces. Seen this before. I would recommend moving devices to the 5Ghz band as much as you can. And run wire to those devices as much as you can.

There are some solutions. Let us know how it goes.

I am having a similar issue. 2.4 GHz devices drop off during the night sometime and fail to reconnect until you unplug and reboot. 5.0 GHz seem to work fine as my new iPod does not seem to drop off.
The 2.4 GHz devices seem to get stuck on connection. This happens to 3 android phones and a laptop.
This is on Time Warner Cable.
Motorola SBG6580 modem with NAPT disabled.
I have set the router to Ch. 11 and gave each device a designated IP.
Security is WPA2/TKIP iirc.
Firmware is 1.03
HW Ver is A1

No cordless phones in our house, I will try all of the suggestions you made this weekend when I have some time. Tried the Inssider tool on an Android phone but think i will need to put it on a Laptop or PC to really take advantage of it. Thanks for the suggestions I will keep you informed.

Try a reset to factory defaults on your XBOX on Network Settings.

My XBOX Slim was giving me weird issues with my DLink routers.  So even when wired it was showing up as a wireless client on my DIR-857.  Clear those wireless network settings, clear the system cache, reboot and reconfigure your wireless and see if that helps.  Also, do a reboot on your 865L to start fresh.

Hope it works for ya.

Factory Reset has been tried, no cordless phone in my house (5.0 GHz band does the same thing). There are other wireless routers in the area, I tried moving the channel to 11, I think there was only 1 overlap on that channel but it looked to be the cleanest.

I could not find anything called WISH, I was able to disable WPS. There is no Short GI in the Advanced Wireless that I could see. WLAN partition was off by default. There is no Extra Wireless Protection under Advanced Wireless.

I will give this a shot but I am at the point I may return the router because I should not have to disable all of this stuff to get a wireless connection to stay up for more that 24 hours.

If you do have other WiFi routers in the area, this could be the issue and even switching to a different router, will still be present due to the other WiFi routers in the area and using up the channels. You need to see if 5Ghz will be a better fix for you as 2.4Ghz is probably very busy in your area.

This router works very well out of the box and with some of the changes mentioned and the reason we suggest them is that in most cases are not needed and are for troubleshooting purposes. This router work well for me however I only have 2-3 other WiFi's near me.  ::)

I would put all my devices on the 5.0 GHz band but the only device I have that see's this one is my Ipod, all other devices only see the 2.4GHz band.

Shutting off WPS seems to have fixed it, wireless has been up and running for 3 days  now with no connection issues.
