Access storage as a mapped drive from external network
« on: February 24, 2015, 03:24:38 PM »

Hi
I have connected an external HDD to the USB port and I am accessing it with no problems within my home network as a mapped drive
Is there a way I can access my HDD as a Mapped Drive from external IP address (i.e. from work or other city), something like this:
\\92.170.240.33\Mass_Storage_12191

I have tried so far but with no success, and I have static IP address(it's always the same)

Thanks
Kiril

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

The remote access is gained by using the mydlink.com features of the router.

Hi,
Hardware version: A1
Firmware version: 1.12WW

I am connected wireless to the router at home

I have Cable UTP provider
The connection to the internet is via PPPoE and has static/real IP address

I am trying to MAP my usb external drive from another/external network(NOT from home, where I have already done it and it works), so I can use it as a mapped drive in My Computer at work. MyDlink doesn't offer such feature

Any ideas?

Ya, not sure of mapping across like this is supported on any router for USB drives has it might present a security risks that most Mfrs don't want to deal with on there routers. I recommend that if you need more access to storage solutions, maybe a D-Link DNS nas storage device would be better suited as these devices are designed to allow more access from remote locations. Another solution would be to set up a PC with FTP services. Set up FTP Vitual Server rule on the router and connect the drive to the PC. Use a FTP client to access the drive.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

Thank you for your detailed answer!
That's my conclusion so far, after a bunch of unsuccessful attempts. I have opened a case in the DLink support site and am waiting for an answer. I will sureli share their answer as soon as I receive it.

Thx

Hi
Sorry for the delay but I just got an answer from D-Link:

Quote
Dear Sir,
For first, sorry for late answer, we have limited support for Ro via Self Service portal.
For the case.
You can map the drive via lokal ip. Fotr remote access for Mydlink Shareport enable units you can use an application with whom you can have access to connected USB drive.
Also You can reach the unit via WAN_IP:8181 or via the added port what you can check on Routers webpage.

So, this confirms our conclusion that The drive cannot be reached by wan as a mapped one probably for security reasons.
