Looking for a D-Link router with the following features or something compatible with DD-WRT (which I hope has signal strength control).
Need to use it as a wifi access point:  Need to receive wifi and transmit it via LAN cable to old computer.
Need to be able to adjust signal strength.
Need to be able to turn wifi on and off through the menus. 
I think DD-WRT offers those features but I'm not sure.  There are also other router operating systems (Tomato and OpenWRT) but I'm not sure if they offer those features as well or if any D-Link routers are compatible with those.  DD-WRT seems to need specific hardware requirements.  Not sure of Tomato or OpenWRT.  I'm new to networking and never thought it would be so complex.

I recommend that you check out the OpenWRT and DD-WRT forums and there sites for what they support on D-Link model router hardware. Not all routers support 3rd party FW. Most Broadcom based D-Link routers support 3rd party FW if those Mfrs develop it.

I would check out DIR-868L, DGL-5500, DIR-825, DIR-810L or DIR-615 as prospects for 3rd party FW.
