DIR-685 HDD Issue
« on: December 29, 2012, 02:27:50 PM »

Hi guys, i'm new to the forum, and have done a lot of searching and can't seem to find a resolution to my problem, so decided to post and see what happens.

Ok, so i bought my DIR-685 from Ebay and everything is working well, i then put a HDD pulled from an old laptop in it a Hitachi HTS725032A360 320GB 7200RPM Sata 3GB/s drive (known to be working), which i have tried formatting NTFS, EXT3 and leaving raw.  When i turn the router on, it sounds like it spins the drive up, and then get stuck with a noise i can only describe as a higher pitch beeping/clicking nose.  The boot goes through ok, and it says "Detecting Hard Drive" on the LCD however that is all, the noise doesn't stop and the message stays.

The DIR-685 i have is running "Firmware Version :    1.00 ,  Tue 26 May 2009" and is hardware version "A1".  I did find the compatibility list ftp://ftp.dlink.fr/DIR/DIR-685/Documentations/DIR-685_HD_Compatibility_list_090602.pdf here, obviously my drive is not listed, I was wondering if anyone had experienced similar issues, if it is an issue with the Firmware or formatting of the drive, or is it simply an imcompatibility issue with the HDD and Router?

Thank you for any help, and if i have left any details of vitality out please do request.

Make sure the druve is seated fully into thr slot. I had a similar experience when i first got my 685. It seemed to slide in and the door closed however it was not fully seated on the cinnector. You might want to upgrade FW aswell. Im currently running v2.01 and my 320gb drive is working. I believe i preformatted it using a pc before installing it.

Hiya, thank you for your reply, I have pushed the drive in as far as it could go, and still the same issue.  I will try to format it again NTFS, could you provide a link to the updated FW for the UK A1 version please?
Thank you very much again

Youll need the WW version when you arrive and select the dir 685 model. There is v2.00WW and v2.02WW for your region. NA is for north america.

Just follow the links.

You might turn the router on it back or face to make sure the drive is fully and corecly seated in the slot. It took me a couple of tries before it seated.
