Major Problem
« on: July 23, 2011, 08:50:53 PM »

Hi there, this is my 1st post on this forum and I really need help for I problem that I cannot find any solution too online. My internet speeds are 45 Mbps DL and 1 Mbps UL and my various wireless connections (3 laptops in my household) were achieving speeds anywhere from 25-40 Mbps DL. My router started acting up and wasn't letting anyone connect via wifi so I did a factory reset and set it up the same way I did before (as best as I could, with my short term memory lol), it started working fine again but now the speeds on all the devices that are connecting to at are capped at 18 Mbps. A simple speed test shows that no matter what they won't pass 18 Mbps, I am almost 100% certain this is the router and I was wondering what I might have done wrong or what is causing this.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2 and Cipher to AES only if devices support it.

Also:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Rogers (Cable)
SMC Networks (Built-In Router/Wireless Disabled)
SMCD3GN
Using Wireless G/N
WPA2 (AES)

Did everything you listed above but still cannot connect over 18 Mbps on all my devices.

I would try swapping out cables too between modem and router.

Testing directly to the ISP modem doesn't have the same results?

Well it is just from the wifi capabilities the lan port is perfectly fine so I can't see how the cable is the problem but I will try swapping it out. Through the lan port though I am getting speeds of 45-55 Mbps, connect via lan to the modem is also the same results but the wifi capabilities of my modem are disabled as they are s*** the range is horrible and the speeds I get on that are like 6 Mbps.

What Wireless modes are you using for WiFi?
Just FYI, you wont see the same connections speeds on wifi as you will on wired. Various things in Wifi will affect wireless and thats just the nature of the beast. Speed tests are mainly valid only on a wired connection using one pc.
