Slow internet download speed over 5G wifi
« on: April 22, 2020, 03:47:21 PM »

Hello, DIR-882 user here. DIR-882 HW:A1 FW:1.20 Location: EUROPE
I have 1gbit internet speed from ISP, over LAN I am getting around 800-900 Mbit speed however for what ever reason via 5G wifi I am getting just 250 Mbit no more no less which is weird, QoS is disabled, factory reset done, smart connect disabled, I have tried I think everything to setup on 5G wifi settings, AC only mode, channels (36,40,44,48), channel width all options

I have tried couple of devices with direct visibility to wifi router 1-2m no walls, main PC with intel AC 9560, Ipad 7th gen, work notebook with AC wifi and every time same result ( link speed shown in windows 866/866 Mbit).

Can please anybody help me? Should I try to reflesh firmware or return the device as faulty?
Many thanks in advance.

Factory reset and setup from scratch. This time leave Smart Connect enabled...
What does your wifi adapter see when connect with SC enabled.
What are the speed results then?
Use Ooklas installable speed test app for Windows or your mobile devices.

What happens if you disable SC and the 2.4Ghz radio and enable 20+40+80+80Mhz channel width on 5Ghz?

@Nezmeriz
Could you post a screenshot of your QoS configuration page ; I've had a similar issue after I've wanted to test something there and even if it was in theory disabled it still would limit my throughput on wifi . In my case I couldn't remove devices from their priority tiers or change the default Upload/download values and as I've said even though the QoS itself was disabled it still limited my speed .
Only fix I found was temporarily updating to 1.30 beta changing the settings in that version and going back to 1.20 stable afterwards .

Hello again,
So I have disabled SC, 2.4 Ghz and left only 5Ghz one with 20+40+80+80Mhz channel width - unfortunately no change same speed from 200-250 Mbit (also tried couple of combinations channel, channel width and AC only mode and so on)

also here is a screen from my QoS engine: https://i.imgur.com/x6copYe.jpg

Should I try that 1.30 US firmware even I am located in Europe?

Thank you all for your help and ideas.

Sounds like you are not locking in at 80Mhz. Your ipad should be HT80 and support MuMimo. With a WiFi scanner do you see traffic in 5GHz bands? WiFi is pretty sensitive to interference, especially at 80/160MHz since it tries to use a big chunk of bandwidth. 250Mbps sounds like 40MHz.

How many devices are connected at 5GHz?

Are there applications that are not performing well? Are you having any issues with connectivity?

The speed test is not super accurate. It tests speeds from the router to the server the speedtest application chooses. Do not use QoS and disable smart connect for best results. But note environment plays a huge part of wifi speeds.

@GreenBay42

I have checked via Wifiman app and so far I am the only one around with 5G router :-) and it shows 80Mhz channel width ( pls see screens ). Also only one device is connected to 5G when testing and I am standing right in the front of wifi router.

Result from wifiman: https://i.imgur.com/nwiifTz.jpg
                                https://i.imgur.com/TMDeuSC.jpg

I understand that Speedtest.net is not always accurate however I do have around 900 Mbit via LAN connection when checking via Speedtest.net

QoS engine is disabled, Smart Connect disabled, router is after fresh factory reset and setup from scratch

No I do not have any kind of issues with connectivity or instability, only the speed is low compared to what it should be...I was expecting at least 500mbit over 5G wifi and 80Mhz width with 2x2 MIMO devices.

Thanks

I wish my 5Ghz was that clean. I have no less than 7 WiFi networks showing up at any given time in my neighborhood.

You definitely should be getting a lot better speeds. Not sure if it is a WLAN to WAN issue with the router or just the WiFi portion having issues. This router tested very high with LAN to WAN bandwidth/speed but seems like wifi is having an issue.

Wish there was an easy way to test the local WiFi speed with 2 devices connected 80/160 mu-mimo to see if it is wifi or wifi going through the router to WAN. If you have another router you could connect it to your modem and just connect dlink router to LAN ports (turn off dhcp and upnp) and see if speeds increase.

I can try to test mine out if needed. I have a NetGear R7800 that supports 1733Mbs in wireless bridge mode. I believe I had connected this router once to the 882, been a while though. I have ASUS GT-AX11000 as well I can try out in bridge mode.

The EU and US are the same hardware ; it's just that there are different regulation regarding max Wifi power the device can output and some differences regarding which bands are available but you should be able to flash the router with the US beta without issue ( at least I could and didn't encountered any rel showstoppers  )
Be warned that they did broke the HTTPS encryption somehow and the HTTPS portal is no longer accessible ; you can only manage the router via plain HTTP . For me it was the solution to bypass the broken QoS implementation which once activated cannot be disabled ( it says it's disabled but the same limitations are still in effect and for a 500/250  UP/Down Mb/s connection it creates a bottleneck of about 200-230 Mb/s so less than half ) .
I did factory reset without effect so the only two remaining options were upgrade to 1.30 US beta or a TFTP image recovery rewrite of 1.20 EU ; Since in the previous beta stages I did used US images without issue ( back when 1.11 had many more issues ) the choice was simple . I am however back  on the 1.2 Eu software as the lack of https made me think maybe other things were not OK but rather I just didn't encounter them yet . You should be able to upgrade , test the throughput and downgrade thereafter without issue .
As for my experience I'm getting ~410 Mb/s on my S9 and 420 Mb/s on my laptop with Intel 7260AC ( no 160 MHz compatible clients to test with unformtunately)

https://imgur.com/a/WjVdQTR

You should however try to eliminate the internet/WAN link out of the equation ; if you have 2 laptops or another desktop apart from the laptop set up a network share on one of them , connect the one with the share via ethernet and do a copy test from one device to the other . In  my case when not doing routing duties which also  take some CPU cycles the pure LAN transfers from my NAS to my laptop exceed 500 Mb/s

I have just tried 1.30 US beta firmware, disabled QoS again tried different setups and with no change in speed, I have refleshed back to latest EU 1.20 firmware and same results no more than 250Mbit speed :(((
Last thing what I will try tommorow I will ask my friend who has DIR-878 to lend it to me and will try what speeds I will get over 5G as he has 500Mbit internet from ISP and getting 490 Mbit via his 5G network

So thank you all for your help and patience, I will probably either RMA the router or sell it or I don't know just smash it to the ground.

Here's my speed results with a ASUS GT-AX11000 wireless bridge mode connected to the DIR-882 v1.30 FW. SC and DFS enabled. DNS Relay disabled. Low power set due to other wifi signals near by.

"main PC with intel AC 9560, Ipad 7th gen, work notebook with AC wifi"
Ensure the drivers are up to date on the Intel adapter.
What is the mfr and model# of the adapter in the work notebook?

Did you try Channels 149-165, for me I got better speeds using the upper band channels.

Also try the speed test without other devices connected to the Wifi Network.
