Title: Connected Guest Clients - Rename and Parental Controls
Post by: Rick, Chicago, IL, USA on January 13, 2020, 07:21:21 PM
The connected clients list includes those in my Host (wireless and wired) as well as Guest (wireless) networks.  When I'm viewing clients on the "Host" designation, each client has a pencil icon, where I can modify the client's friendly name, make a DHCP reservation, enable parental controls, etc.  This does not seem to be available on the "Guest" designation.  Is there any way to modify clients on the guest network?  In addition to providing friendlier names, there are a number of guest devices that I would like subject to parental controls.

Perhaps in a similar vein, the heading of the clients table mentions "You can block a device from accessing your network completely."  I can't seem to find that feature on either the hosts or guests section.

For background, I'm running DIR-882 HW:A1 FW:1.20 in the United States.

Guest Network is meant a a temporary kind of use and configuration. Meaning that users only have a limited time on the network or guests connect for a short period of time then move on or disconnect when they are done and may not return. It's not meant for long term connections thus configurations of the guest network are limited. Guest Network doesn't support parental controls as well based on the amount of time guests are connected. Controls and blocking are configurable on the main wifi network.

Thanks for the quick reply (and the welcome!)

To gain the security provided by the "Internet Access Only" feature, I am using the guest network for some permanent devices, specifically those that I might not "trust" as much.  (i.e. IOT devices).  Since you mention temporary/limited-time, is there a concern with my intended type of use?  (Is their time on the guest network limited?)

You can connect to the Guest Network all you want. I believe the intended use of the guest network was made for users which maybe visiting for short periods of time when these visiting users need internet access.

The guest network has limited features and basic configurations. If you need more controls and features, then migrate those devices to the main network.
