Title: Some laptops will not connect to router. Will connect after a reboot of router.
Post by: zeoph on September 28, 2017, 01:33:09 PM
I have a 890L that is updated to the latest firmware. The smart connect is disabled.

At least 3 different laptops will not connect to the router unless you reboot the router. Trying to reboot devices has no affect. They can see the router but will not connect.  Usually it is when the pc is not used for a little bit gets turned on then wont connect back to the router. Daily this happens.

I have a desktop connected wireless that does not seem to have the problem.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

What happens with Smart Connect enabled? Same thing?

What wireless modes are you using when smart connect is disabled?
What channels are you using when smart connect is disabled?
What mfr and model is the wireless cards in each of these devices including the PC?

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Firmware version 1.11
USA Region
Factory reset was performed after purchase.
Since new firmware update no reset was done.

Firmware update was recently done. Issue was was taking place before new firmware update and is still happening,  no change.

ISP is a local company. Wireless type connection.
Modem is built into the antenna.

2.4Ghz and 5.0GHz have different SSID names. They were the same. I changed them. No change in issue.

No cordless phones near the router

Smart connect is disabled. Smart connect enabled seemed to make the issue worse.

2.4GHz channel is set to Auto.
5.0GHz channel is set to Auto.

"Note: Only the 2.4Ghz devices seem to be affected.  I have 2 desktops with wireless 5.0Ghz connections and they do not seem to drop at all"
2 laptops running 2.4Ghz cannot connect unless you reboot the router almost daily. 1 laptop running 2.4GHz has had it happend a couple times though this laptop is not used nearly as much as the other two laptops."

"Note: Router has been set to reboot at 5AM every morning. This does not seem to help."

No other wireless devices (routers etc.) nearby.

I have looked at the two laptops with the issue and the wireless cards drivers appear up to date.

Please advise and Please help. Getting tired of the inlaws rebooting the router when they cannot connect causing my internet to drop with out warning. :(

Thank you

I recommend doing a factory reset and set up from scratch and enable Smart Connect.

What is the Mfr and model if these wireless cards inside the laptops?

Also you can try this new FW out as well:

I just now updated to the newest firmware 1.20.
I will check to see if that helps any. If not I will get the wireless cards model # etc.

Laptops are still doing it almost every morning or when not used for several hours then someone gets on and no connection until reboot.
I even tried setting a laptop to not go to sleep just the monitor and did not help.

ALso might disable any power management features on the wireless NICs on the laptops as well...

Hi
I just upgraded to FW1.20, a few days ago and after a wile (some hours) I can no longer acces routermanagement ip 192.168.1.1
No matter if I am on wireless or cabel, I can not connect to routermanagement ip 192.168.1.1
External or acces via https://dk.mydlink.com/ dont work either :-\
If I reboot the router I can.

Laptop can connect via Wifi I got internet, so can browse the internet, but not connect to 192.168.1.1
I was however pleased to see that I got a stronger Wfif signal with 1.20 on 2,4Ghz if I set the channel to 10. But maybe I would have that result with older firmware as well. could be a coincidence

Im still accessing mine at 192.168.45.89 running behind a DGL-4500...

Did you do a factory reset after the v1.20 was applied then set up from scratch?

try http://dlinkrouter.local.

The default IP for the router is 192.168.0.1. Look at the IP settings of your computer and see what the default gateway IP address is. This is the address of the router.

Can you ping the IP?

Yes I did factory reset, but did load my old settings, not setting it up from scratch.

I changed the router ip to 192.168.1.1, so its not default anymore. Did not try dlinkrouter.local - dont know if I can ping the router, since I just rebooted it (power-cycle), but I guess I can try later, when its unable to connect again.

I recommend doing a factory reset then set up from scratch. There maybe too many differences between v1.11 and v1.20 that may cause issues with loading of older config files. I know its a pain however it's best to set up from scratch then do a new save for v1.20 level.

Yes, its at pain, also it does makes the "Save Settings To Local Hard Drive" useless, if you cant use the saved settings.
I can give the router one more try, as you say, otherwise, I may abandon it for the Synology RT2600ac. The Dlink 890L keeps disappointing me.

I'll test with factory reset.

It does make sense however the config files, at least for D-Link routers, can and should be used while the the same version or maybe one version up. Being that v1.20 is way out from v1.11, there was some changes apparently and it makes it probably incompatible being that far out from the last version.

Either one. I like the UI for easier access. If you can't access the UI, then use the reset button.

The reset and manual setting all settings again, not using loaded setting, seams to have helped for now.

Here are the main two laptops wireless card model #'s that are causing a problem with the router.

Qualcomm Atheros QCA9565
Qualcomm Atheros AR9485

Nothing helped with the firmware update etc.

Have turned off power management etc. I also took 1 laptop had only the display turn off after 10 minutes and kept all power on and to not turn off. After over night the laptop was disconnected and would not reconnect even though it can see the router just fine.

As noted if i cycle the router it will reconnect with the devices.

I also tried other wireless drivers that did install and it did not change the issue.

zeoph, do you have any other wireless devices? maybe a wireless extender or AP? Please power those off. Then reset the 890L to defaults and connect only one of the laptop on wireless using the default SSID. You can also disable smart connect and name each SSID differently and test each one with the laptop.

Let me know the results.

zeoph, when you say it doesn't connect. Does that mean when you go to your wireless network list on the laptop, select the SSID of the router, enter the Wi-Fi password, iy wont connect? or it connects but then will drop connection after a while? Internet? When it drops can you ping other devices or the router?

Are you using the built-in Windows utility to connect or 3rd party?

Do all 2.4GHz devices drop around the same time or is it just these 2 laptops?

Are the laptops using DHCP or are they statically assigned?

Do you have any 3rd party "internet security" or network software running?

Will it drop connectivity during gaming/streaming/downloading, or is it only after being idle? or random?

Does it drop when other specific devices are on? Like if another device is streaming a movie or something? or is it completely random?

Is it in certain areas of your home? If you move the laptop to different locations does it still drop? or in a specific room?

After sitting over night or for a long period of time. The laptops will not be connected to the network anymore and when you click to connect it just says not connected. Only way to get the laptop to connect is to cycle the router. Restarting the laptop, running trouble shooter on laptop, removing the router in the list and reconnecting does not help. Internet does not appear to drop while the PC is being used.

Using built in WIFI to connect.

2 laptops appear to lose connection every day. 1 other laptop has done it a couple times. All laptops are used every day. And it does appear to be the 2.4ghz as I have two 5ghz USB devices plugged into two desktops and I have never seen them drop connection ever. (Except for when I taught my two in-laws how to reboot the router when their laptops don't connect. Now it's everyday until it reboots.) :(

No network software or 3rd party internet security and all using DHCP. PC's use windows defender.

Drops after long idle. PC's on different ends of a large house. Usually when in-laws get up in mornings is when it is first noticed usually. FYI I have even had the router reboot at 5AM every morning. Did not help.

Can you disable smart Connect and then set single mode N on 2.4Ghz only and disable both 5Ghz radios. Manual channel 1, 6 or 11 depending if you have neighbors on any of those channels. 11 is preferred. Then test.
Then disable 2.4Ghz radio and use the Primary 5Ghz and set single mode N and test if your laptops support 5Ghz. Try any of the channels

Are you running Windows 10 on your laptops?

https://www.webnots.com/fix-wifi-connection-issue-in-windows-10/ (https://www.webnots.com/fix-wifi-connection-issue-in-windows-10/)

When it drops, don't try to connect. Just open a web browser and see if you can get to the Internet. Also, go to start > type in CMD. At the prompt type ipconfig. see if you computer is getting an IP address (192.168.0.xxx unless you changed the router's LAN IP address). The default gateway should be the IP of fthe router (192.168.0.1).

This is a difficult issue to figure out what is happening. It's either environment, some weird incompatibility issues with the adapters and router, Windows issue, or the router is defective. If there is interference or your laptops are in a spot where it cannot communicate with the router it may explain it. Remember wireless is 2-way communication. It doesn't matter how strong the router signal is, if the adapters signal isn't strong enough or there is some interference near the laptops, the connection will not be good.  But the fact that the only way to regain connection is rebooting the router, not the laptops, is making this more difficult.

Does everything work good other than the dropping?

If both laptops are connecting at the same time, does 1 drop while the other works or do they drop around the same time? If all other devices that are connected to the 2.4GHz band drop around the same time then it definitely is a router issue.

Where is the router located? How are the antennas situated? What is around the router? What is in between the router and your laptops when they drop? Make sure there is at least 3 feet of air around the antennas.

1 or 2 story house?

Wireless is very sensitive. Fish tanks, appliances, bluetooth, wireless ceiling fans, mirrors, glass, etc can cause issues.

Apologize for getting back so late. Life got in the way.

Originally when I bought the router smart connect was on. It caused issues which tech support had me turn it off. It did seem to work better after that. I do not remember the actual problem. I believe it was a connectivity issue. This was like on day 1 of getting the router.

The problem does seem to related to the 2.4 ghz. I did what you asked me to do above. The network including the devices that were working correctly on 5ghz started to perform very badly. Same issue as the laptops. Not wanting to connect. Almost seemed more devices I connected onto the 2.4ghz the more they did not want to connect unless I rebooted the router.

I do not have neighbors close enough to affect wireless channels on my end. I did move channels around early on and it did not affect anything.

The laptops I have do not support 5ghz. Two desktops and two Pixel phones using 5gz have never been affected unless we use 2.4ghz.

Pretty much at my wits end here.

Wireless is very sensitive. Fish tanks, appliances, bluetooth, wireless ceiling fans, mirrors, glass, etc can cause issues.

All laptops are running Windows 10. One of the laptops when used is like 6 feet from the router at all times. There is nothing in the way between the router and at least one laptop. A wall between the other.  House is a Tri level dwelling. All laptops affected are on the same level as the router.

Has there been an occurrence where only 1 laptop was affected and the rest were not. That is possible though most of the time no one on the 2.4gz can connect.

Laptops do not seem to drop connection when used. It is only after no one appears to use there laptops for a period of time then they cannot connect to the network as it shows disconnected.

Cannot connect to router or any internet in the browser when this is happening. When you hit connect it cycles like it is trying to connect then times out and says cannot connect. Laptops are different make and models with at the time new fresh load of Windows 10.

There is some network performance that has me scratching my head. I have seen the network run incredibly slow until I restarted the router. Then the performance for the rest of the day improves greatly. Laptops are generally running Facebook and browser for email. Nothing data intensive. The two desktops are running much more intensive data transfer between two pc's. Nothing huge just a networked program pulling field data from the server to my work station and some Youtube.

As mentioned before I have restored the router to factory specs several times and updated firmware in exact steps as mentioned on here. No changes in performance.

I think there is something wrong with this router. My POC linksys I used to have ran better then this router has from day 1.

Yeah maybe the router is faulty. I use this router at home constantly streaming and gaming in a 2 story house with zero problems. I know windows 10 has issue reconnecting to wireless networks, especially after going in sleep/hibernation mode. I assume your wireless adapters are on-board and not USB?

Sounds like you've done all you can. I wold contact support to see if they can RMA the router for you.

Maybe reset it 1 more time and DO NOT change any settings (other than the wireless network name/password and setting up your ISP). Do not change anything else including IP addresses, etc. See if the problem continues.

Wireless adapters are on-board. I can try the reset again. Though I believe I have done it 3 times since I purchased the router. Even then initially I did not change any settings including name/password.

I agree with GreenBay, you done all you can. Get the router RMAd ASAP.

Mines running flawlessly.

Are you running Windows 10 on your laptops?

https://www.webnots.com/fix-wifi-connection-issue-in-windows-10/ (https://www.webnots.com/fix-wifi-connection-issue-in-windows-10/)

https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/wifi-keeps-disconnecting-or-dropping-out-on-windows-10-solved/ (https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/wifi-keeps-disconnecting-or-dropping-out-on-windows-10-solved/)

Well I am back.

I RMA the router little over a month ago and received another router back.

Day 1, I plug the new router into the network. ( I note that it is updated to latest firmware etc.)

Day 2, I unplug the POC router. Same issue as before,  other devices in morning cannot connect until router is rebooted. Also I note on day 1 the network is running like crap. This was noted on the original router also.

I plug the old linksys router back in and the network runs just fine and since then NOT 1 device has had a issue.

I have many years experience in the IT industry from break fix to networking etc. So I like to think its not me or something in this house, being that a generic $50 linksys router out performs this router with no issues.

So I decided to drop the router off to a buddy who has more experience then I in the IT industry.

Last night he plugs the router in and sets the family devices all up with the new router. He then calls me today and says half of the devices would connect to the router the other half including his Iphone would not connect. Just like before it shows the connection though when trying to connect it just says cannot connect until of course you restart the router. Note he is in a household running about 6-10 devices wireless.

So that being said, what the hell do I do now?????

Also, the warranty on the original router expired toward the end of February if that matters.

So any thoughts or ideas????........   >:(

When you got the new router, did the router already come loaded with most current or did you upgrade it manually?

Wow, was sure hoping that the new one would resolve this...kind of out of ideas. If you tested it as your place and at a different location, with same problem, why is this new one failing as well.

Only other thing we can try, since the router is out of warranty and you can get back to OEM FW, Wanna try loading DD-WRT on it and see if same thing happens?

You can load up most current release and test it out and see if same thing happens. If it does, then maybe a HW issue. If it doesn't, then something in OEM FW and between your devices would be the symptom.

The router came loaded with the most current software.

If it is a issue between HW and OEM FW then it is a mighty big one. Many different kinds of devices have now experienced the same issue with this router.

I am willing to try anything instead of throwing it away. A lot of money wasted if I cannot get this to work not to mention I will probably steer away from Dlink routers in the future especially if i cannot get this solved. As my buddy who tested this for me said. This router is useless as it works now.

Hell at this point, I would ship this to the president of DLINK or their head engineer on my dime and say go home and plug it in and see what I am talking about.

So being that the original warranty is out, I am completely without warranty now including with the one they sent to me?

I think so. Something to ask support and see.

Well give the WRT a go. Just follow the FAQ instructions well. You have the ability to go back to OEM FW using the recovery mode at any time. Lets see if we can get this thing going. Ya I agree, these are not cheap units to have not running correctly. IT will be helpful to know if the problem goes away with WRT.

AT some point maybe we can get D-Link support to review more on this as well.

I have been having the same problems as zeoph since I purchased my DIR-890L as well. Luckily, it is just my dear wife that has a laptop with only 2.4 signal as well as her iPhone. We also have some webcams that work off of 2.4 GHz and some other smart home equipment. All of the devices drop at the same time in my experience. And just like zeoph, I have to reset my router to get them to work. Hopefully this issue can be resolved at some point.

When you say all your devices drop at the same time, are you talking about the wireless connection or the Internet is dropping?

I'm using firmware version 1.20.
Hardware version A2
I'm in Iowa. We have fiber optic Internet, but have had 2 different dsl servers on the same router previously on different homes and had the same issues. We don't have any cordless phones or anything else on the 2.4 GHz band that I can think of. And there are a couple of WiFi signals that reach our house from neighbors but I am on different channels and their signals are weak. Also, having lived in 3 different locations while using this router I am certain that is not the issue.

I would contact D-LInk support and ask for help and information regarding this. Possible a RMA maybe needed.

*UPDATE*
Sorry it has taken so long to get back about this.

WRT WORKS!

I followed the instructions and since then the router has had ZERO problems.  No dropping, lag etc. All devices stay connected.

I seen several new posts about this same router. This fix has taken care of the issue. Been working for several months with no issue.

Thanks for all the help. Especially FurryNutz!
