Title: Hotspot mode vs Router Mode
Post by: brownbox on July 02, 2012, 08:19:53 PM
I got the Dir 505 the other day and had a hard time figuring it out.

At first, I couldnt figure out the difference between Router-Mode and HotSpot-Mode
In Router Mode, you plug Ethernet cable into Dir505 - Dir acts as normal Wireless Router
In HotSpot Mode, there is no cord plugged into the Dir505.
You use the setup wizzard to turn another wireless routers signal into a HotSpot that can be used by multiple devices.  During the Hotspot Wireless Set-up wizzard, The radio finds the available wireless signals (SSID) - You choose one & enter password for the SSID.)
-- Make Sure You UN-CHECK  the box to give The HotSpot a Different Name than original wireless signal   (SSID).  Otherwise it gets really confusing.

I was ready to return my Dir505 when I realized that I could not configure the Repeater-Mode (amplify weak wifi signal) with my Android Device.  Until I realized that the HotSpot-Mode actually met my travel needs .  I wanted a portable device that puts a hardware firewall and added security between my computer/Tablet and the internet signals I will encounter while traveling.  The Dir505 does it perfectly.

An Example:::
Lets say the  wifi SSID from the hotel is: "HotelOne" and password is "25Dogs". (Limited to 1 connected device)

During the set-up wizzard, you find the "HotelOne" SSID signal and enter the hotel supplied password "25Dogs".   ---  Continuing the set-up wizzard, up set a new Hotspot SSID "BullHorn" and password "100Moons"  (now numerous devices can now connect to you new Hotspot)

So now the hotel's wifi "HotelOne" is supplying the wireless power, but the "BullHorn" Hotspot is dishing out the secure/firewalled connection to my clan's four computer/android tablets, etc.  -- And since I have a password for my personal Hotspot, no other hotel guests can get in on our secure Hotspot island.  (Sweet)

Works pretty well.  It's a keeper.  Now, I can sleep a little easier.

Correction - you want to UN-check the box to use a different SSID.  The default is that it will use the same SSID.
