Title: VPN connection drops every some minutes
Post by: aaaaaaa on April 23, 2013, 02:41:33 PM
Hello  :)
I have a D-Link DAP 1360 HV B1 FV 2.12.
When I'm connected with it, the connection drops every few minutes, I can't tell how much but it's about 30 minutes.
Today I replaced it with a new one at the store, but the same problem happens.
I'm connecting with a PPTP VPN, and when I connect to my router without this extender there's no problem.
Please help me!!
Thank you!

Well, added my computer to the MAC address filter within the repeater's settings and it works for more than a hour without a drop.
This method to fix was advised on this forum. I saw it today.
Bye!

Noooo! It didn't help. The connection drops all the time.
When it didn't drop I was connected to the router and not to the DAP 1360.

What region are you located?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53008.0)
For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the main host router. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

What wireless modes are you using on the main host router?
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/) to find out. How many?

Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it on the main host router.
Enable WMM Enable (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=50738.0) on the main host router

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

TS should try and run on 20Mhz channel, also using the watchguard in the dlink to ping your router (plus setting a static DHCP ip to the dlink AP) could help. To prevent it from dropping the connection.

To me it sounds like you need some sort of keep alive on the computer, could be that the router is doing that without you knowing about it when you are running the VPN. And when you use the AP the router does not know about it, so it does not keep the connection alive.

There should not be a problem if it works with the router. If you are using a laptop, power saving on the LAN and WLAN card cuts out the connection and reconnects to the AP when using the laptop. Some people do not know about that.
