This procedure is designed to safely add hard drive(s) (HDDs) to an already-configured ShareCenter with at least one empty HDD slot, while preserving preexisting HDD configuration and data. This procedure does not apply to replacing faulty/small HDDs or expanding the number of HDDs in an existing RAID array (RAID scaling) or JBOD. You should maintain a full backup of all critical data on a separate physical storage device prior to performing this procedure.
Procedure (2 Bay ShareCenter)
Scenario:
- Slot-1: Formatted HDD with data
- Slot-2: Empty
- Desired Result: Add new HDD to (the now empty) Slot-2
Procedure:
- Power down the ShareCenter
- Remove the HDD from the ShareCenter (using a marker, write "Slot-1" on the HDD)
- Place new un-formatted HDD(s) in Slot-1 of the ShareCenter
- Power-up the ShareCenter
- Configure the new HDD with the desired configuration
- Power down the ShareCenter
- Remove the newly formatted HDD (using a marker, write "Slot-2" on the HDD)
- Move the new HDD to Slot-2 (as per the slot label written on the HDD)
- Re-seat the original HDD in Slot-1 (as per the slot label written on the HDD)
- Restart the ShareCenter
Procedure (4 Bay ShareCenter)
Scenario:
- Slot-1: Formatted HDD with data
- Slot-2: Formatted HDD with data
- Desired Result: Add two new HDDs to (the now empty) Slot-3 and Slot 4
- Note: Although this example addresses a ShareCenter with two existing HDDs, this procedure can be modified to accommodate ShareCenters with one to three existing formatted HDDs
Procedure:
- Power down the ShareCenter
- Remove the HDDs from Slot-1 and Slot-2
- Using a marker, label the original HDD that was in Slot-1 with "Slot-1"
- Using a marker, label the original HDD that was in Slot-2 with "Slot-2"
- Place two new un-formatted HDD(s) in Slot-1 and Slot-2
- Power-up the ShareCenter
- Configure the two new HDDs with the desired configuration
- Power down the ShareCenter
- Remove the two newly formatted HDDs
- Using a marker, label the new HDD that was in Slot-1 with "Slot-3"
- Using a marker, label the new HDD that was in Slot-2 with "Slot-4"
- Move the two new HDD(s) to Slot-3 and Slot-4 (as per the slot labels written on each HDD)
- Re-seat the original HDDs in Slot-1 and Slot-2 (as per the slot labels written on each HDD)
- Restart the ShareCenter
