Blocked packets!
« on: December 31, 2007, 03:41:39 PM »

I am getting a ton of dropped packets while playing COD4 with my PS3.  I have the PS3 in the DMZ and static routed to a specific IP.

Here are some of them:

Looking at your logs these packets are being dropped due to being invalid state requests.  Looks to me like either the PS3 or CoD4 get sloppy with their programming.  Turning off SPI under Advanced->Firewall should fix the drops.

Stateful Packet Inspection is not the only service a firewall provides.

However in this case it is counter productive to what Dinz24 wants to do with his router.

You could as easily ask why don't you only use software consistent with using every feature of the router.

If the PS3 is having issues with SPI then we suggest disabling the feature as Fatman has suggested. You are not disabling the "firewall" by disabling SPI. A NAT router is a firewall by default and unless you DMZ the PS3 (oh wait, he did) then you are protected. Personally I would go with the SPI before I ever put anything in DMZ.

You need to set up tcp and udp ports for the ps3 and cod4 as well as any other game you may use. turn off spi then you should only see icmp type 3 blocked. Some of this is due to bad programing on cod4 servers as well as the psn network, but should work fine if you open ports.

Not nessisscarly, the UPnP should maniuple the port for out bound, unless you're referring to hosting a game.

The issue i have encoutered with this router is that upnp gets blocked and timed out. As well the ps3 has to have ports opened for fluid play, example on Call of Duty 4 the xbox is configured for ports 3074 and 3075, but the ps3 is not. The other issue we ps3 owners have to deal with is sony's patch updates that mess up our connections. Thus we have to open these ports for psn network and the game ports for a particular game.
And yes this router is blocking when it should not be.
If this router is designed for gaming then we should have more control over how the firewall works as my modem has a basic firewall as well, this could be the issue as they get blocked at the modem.

ISSUE RESOLVED!
I am a PS3 owner and gamer.. I did a hard reset on the router and redownloaded the update and loaded. I then proceeded to do a complete reconfiguration of the router for the ps3.
dhcp reservations
I had to give the ps3 an access policy
Had to open ports for ps3 in gaming
Had to do special application for ps3.
In doing so i have now seen a whole new router and connection. It is blocking the incoming ports it should be blocking and is allowing the ps3 to now properly handshake with PSN network and COD4 server.
My signal is now solid when connected to the game server as it should be. I had tried every configuration i could think of so I thought and had no luck. This configuration is perfect, no drops, solid connection at my full speed, no dropped packets.
Will make a post for ps3 owners looking to configure their router.
P.S Lycan, do not know why I had to do all three configs but it seems to be the only way to get this router to work as it is supposed to.
