Internet goes down, router's web interface is not accessible
« on: September 14, 2013, 01:20:59 AM »

Hi guys,

I have a huge problem. When my roommates are downloading (that is my guess) the Internet does down completely and I even cannot access the router's web interface, the only thing I can do - ping it and ping is ok. After the hardware reboot everything is ok for less than minute (until roommates are connecting probably) and then the story repeats again. I cannot tell them not to download and I cannot get my own Internet connection. I need somehow make my router stable. I have tried to install the stable firmware 2.07NA (the newer ones are even worse), tried to configure QoS engine to set a low priority for torrents - nothing.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Welcome!
  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates?
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Review this and set up QoS rules using the following:
Gaming and QoS for XBL
Use the ALL Other Devices rule as an example.

It's recommended to moderate our torrent seeds and downloads as routers do have limitations.

What Hardware version is your router? - B1
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status - Originally it was 2.10NA, now it is 2.07
What region are you located? - USA
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router? - Wireless
Has a Factory Reset been performed? - Yes
Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates? - Yes
Was the router working before any firmware updates? - I had the same issues, just all of sudden the router goes down for a while, now I know that it happens without a reason!

Modem
I think it is connected to a modem, cause other 2 routers I have tested do not have this kind of problem.

What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

    • Any cordless house phones?
    • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
6" minimum safe distance between devices.
