Title: Adding Disk 2 to DNS-343 formats Disk 1
Post by: chaseral on July 14, 2009, 08:09:59 AM
Hi,

Is there a proper documented way to add new disk to the DNS-343? I added a Disk 2 to my DNS-343 after I power down the unit. When I power it on, it detected the new disk and ask me to format. After that it rebooted and I found that my Disk 1 is formatted as well. Does anyone encounter this? I am running on 1.02 firmware. Is there a proper way to do it? I tried added the Disk 2 again while power up and it cannot detect.
Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Can you give more details on your type of disks? Since you only had one desk before it must have been in Standard mode.

The DNS-343 does not support hot swapping functionality so adding it while powered on will not work.

Hi,

My Disk 1 is Western Digital 1TB and my Disk 2 is Western Digital 1.5TB and I am using them as standard disk. How should I insert the new Drive 2 without wiping out my data in Drive 1?

Hallo,

are you using FunPlug on your DNS-343 ?

Hi Jack,

I had funplug installed and that is exactly what happened to me. Thank you directing to the correct post. Thanks.

I am not using FunPlug and encountered the same problems, and here's why I'm not convinced it causes the malfunction.

I had the same issue. The system was telling me it was going to format the newly added drive, but at the next page indicated it was starting with drive 1, my good drive with data on it.

I spoke to a tech at DLink who told me he'd run some tests. He went out and bought some drives (so he told me) to test that condition. He later came back with step-by-step instructions that would allow me to add and format a second drive. After I was done, following his instructions to the letter, I ended up with newly formatted Drive 1 AND Drive 2. Not impressive.

Not wanting to lose data again, I went out and bought 2 more drives. If I was going to go through this again, it was going to happen only once more. I figured I'd format them all and use them (non-RAID as intended) as I had planned and get more space as I do not need everything to be protected.

While I had the new drives, I did run some tests. I noticed that several times, the system asked me to format drive 1, and at other times, it did not, so that you can in fact, AT TIMES, remove a drive and replace it and format it without losing info on other drives.

The problem seems to me to be intermittent. I am running version 1.02A and have four idential 1.5 TB Seagate drives. I fear the day one of my drives fails! The only solution offered to me was to purchase another box and do a backup, which is why I bought the darn thing to begin with. A frustrating issue to say the least.

Battling very same issue. Corrupted data due to EX2 quick format seems beyond DIY recovery. At this stage I am unsure how to add HDD to non-raid DNS-343. These gigantic drives are not easily backed up...

Good Luck

Just lost 2TB of files when adding a second drive. It said it was formatting newly added drive, but instead it formatted both. Very frustrating! anyone have any suggestions on good ext3 file recovery software for windows or mac ???

Is this a bug in the code or it this suppose to be the way it work? How come no Dlink tech had given any advise on this yet?

I had tried another way by removing my HDD1 and leaving my HDD2 and newly inserted HDD3. HDD3 formatted ok and did not ask to format HDD2. But when I plug in HDD1, it keep detecting that it is a new HDD and ask me to format. I had to press skip everytime I log into the control page. I tried all sorts of slots position and it still does not work. This is so annoying!!! :-[ :-[

I had loaded 1.03FW and deleted funplug from the system. However it still detect that HDD1 as a new HDD and keep asking me to format. I had to press skip everytime I log into the configuration page.

Hi!

I had the same problem with formatting new disks with ffp installed, but i find the way how to fix it.
I have 4 HDDs not in raid.

When you need to add new HDD to NAS, you can use this step-by-step solution:
0. You need ffp plug installed;
1. Take out all HDDs from NAS;
2. Insert new HDD into drive bay 1;
3. Boot NAS, login into web admin site and format HDD;
4. Take out new HDD and insert old HDDs into their bays (disk with ffp installed must be in 1-st bay), then insert new HDD into free bay;
5. Boot NAS and login into it using ssh or telnet;
6. Run  hd_verify. In output search for mtd_smagic value (something like 079e9865cf36a576c91......). Write it out somewhere. Also you need write out serials of all HDDs (in the begining of output of hd_verify). Write out serials in pairs: sda - serial, sdb - serial, etc.
7. Go into /mnt/HD_a4, there is file with name starting with dot, something like .x37c9E.
Structure of this file looks like:
magic: 079e9865cf36a576c91.............
mac: <mac address of nas>
node: sda
p2: NORMAL * <hdd serial1> * <hdd serial2> * <hdd serial3>

I have 4 HDD installed, so there is 3 serials. If you have less HDD, you'll get less serials (qty of HDDs - 1)

You need edit this file next way:
a) replace old magic with new one;
b) replace <hdd serials> with serials of all disks, except serial of current disk(in this case sda).
i.e.:
p2: NORMAL * <hdd serial1(sdb)> * <hdd serial2(sdc)> * <hdd serial3(sdd)>

8. Repeat step 7 for the same file on another disks (/mnt/HD_b4, c4, d4).
9. I'm not sure it's necessary, but in last step I execute write_hdverify.
10. Reboot NAS or simply mount all unmounted disks (mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/HD_a2, sdb2 -> HD_b2, etc.)
11. Check result of hd_verify.

That's all. Quite easy :)

Hi ECF,

After I skip the format on the login page, I am able to access the data on my HDD1 as usual but it will prompt me everytime I log in.

Thanks for the update Xatus, I will try the steps you mentioned.

This is really some serious bug you should look at in your next firmware release. I had HDD1 and HDD2 in my system now and it keep prompting me to format HDD1. I went out and bought another 2 disk, HDD3 and HDD4. I copied all my data from HDD1 to HDD2 and then inserted HDD3 and HDD4 and rebooted. When it start up, it detect HDD1, HDD3 and HDD4 as new disk and so I formatted them and it rebooted.

After startup it now detect my HDD2 as a new drive and this drive has all my data now. Damn it!!!
I had spent 2 days copying my data from HDD1 to HDD2. Some thing is really screwing up here or am I the only one experiencing it. If this is the case, Dlink should advise to start the NAS with all 4 disk!

In this case there is no funplug and I had restored to factory default and on firmware 1.03. So is this a bug or what?

Brankwan

Yeah something is really odd here. After you copied the Data from HDD1 to HDD2 you had the data duplicated in both drives correct? Did you try logging into the unit at anytime at this point before installing the 2 new drives to see if the unit would prompt you to format both drives?

Unfortunately it looks like you will need to copy your data to another drive once again in order to find a remedy. See if this issue manifests on this other volume or you just might have to format HDD2 as it asks and go from there. Its odd but it looks like it may have something to do with the data on the volume.

I looks to me that installing fun plug may cause such issues as this. Every time I hear of such an issue on this device or DNS-323 Funplug is mentioned. Now that is is removed I would recommend backing up your data and formating the drive if it prompts you.

i am suffering the same problems as the others in this thread.  i had 2x320G in slots 1 & 2, and 2x2T in slots 3 & 4.  i removed the 320s from slots 1 & 2,  pulled the drives in slots 3 & 4 partway out, and put new 2TB drives in slots 1 & 2.  Powered up, formatted the new drives, powered down.  Reseated the drives in slots 3 & 4, and rebooted.  Web interface wants to format drives in what it says are slots 1 & 2; However the serial #s are for the original drives in slots 3 & 4.  i shuffled the drives around and discovered that it doesn't want to reformat my 2 old drives as long as they are the only ones in the system no matter what slots they are in.  However, whenever there are 4 drives installed, it wants to format the original 2 drives with all my data on them.

Knowing how long copying the data will take, i am going to set up a linux computer and copy from disc 1 to disc 3 and from disc 2 to disc 4.  Then i am going to stick all 4 drives back in and hope it only formats 2 of them.  Thank goodness all these drives are set up as standard, not raid.

as someone posted a few posts up, there are serial #s and "magic numbers" that are generated by the 343 that is specific to the HDs that are inserted. When these get out of sync, even though the data seems to be in tact the 343 will want to format the drives... check the other DNS-323/343 forum for solution on how to manually sync these numbers again...

I experienced a similar problem with my DNS-343 a while back.  With all four HDD's formatted as standard volumes, I swapped Volume_2, rebooted, and pressed "skip" when asked to format the new drive.  Upon reboot, only Volume_1 was recognized, while Volume_2, Volume_3 and Volume_4 were not recognized.

The only way to access the data on the missing volumes was to pull all HDDs from the DNS-343 and insert the HDD I needed to access in slot 1 (while leaving all remaining slots empty) and reboot.

Fortunately, I had just purchased a second DNS-343 to mirror the first (four HDDs as standard volumes), so I incrementally placed each HDD in slot 1 of the first DNS-343 and copied the data to my newly formatted second DNS-343.  This process was tedious, taking approximately a week to copy all four Volumes.  Then I completely reformatted the first DNS-343 and copied all of the data back (completing my mirror), consuming yet another week.

The lesson I learned was never to press "skip" after inserting a new HDD, the results are always disastrous.

Spent 2 days copying my data to drives 3 & 4 in the 343.  Slots 1 & 2 are empty.  Add drives to slots 1 & 2.  DNS 343 formats them.  Fine, reboot.  Now the DNS 343 wants to format the drives in slots 3 & 4, which have been in it all along!  i feel like i am chasing my tail here.

i am currently copying only irreplaceable data from the 343's drives to my 323, and then i will slap all four drives into the 343.  then i will spend the next couple of weeks ripping my CDs and DVDs all over again.

I had the same experience during my early woes with the DNS-343.  From my own experience (and experimentation), if slot 1 is empty while one or more of the remaining slots are populated, and you format a new HDD in slot 1 and reboot, any existing HDDs in slots 2-4 must be reformated to be recognized.  This makes no sense to me, but that's how the unit currently functions.

Does modifying the serials work?  Had I had this information when I was configuring/re-configuring my two DNS-343s a month ago, I could have saved a full week+ of copying and HDD burn-in.

11. Check result of hd_verify.

That's all. Quite easy :)

I had also some experiences with the installation of a new drive (Samsung F3 2TB HD203WI) into my DNS343 (2x HD103UJ 1TB and 2x HD154UI 1.5TB).

My plan was to replace the 1TB drive in slot 2. So I pulled the drives from slot 3&4 out and inserted the new 2TB in slot 2. Powered up, formatted the new drive in slot 2 and restarted the DNS343.
Silly but reality, both drives in slot 1&2 were formatted! :( (I had saved my data from slot 1, before I began) ;)
The second bad thing was that the system shows me only Volume_1 available. ???

So I started again and formatted both drives in slot 1&2 completely. Then added my old 1.5TB drives in slot 3&4 and rebooted. Now the DNS343 wants to format the drives in slot 3&4 – I skipped!

With the informations from this post it was clear what to do ... :)
OK, but still after restart of my DNS343 only Volume_1 was available in the network.

Here is the solution for my problem. Both later inserted drives in slot3&4 were not correctly configured – missed in the configuration files.

You should check in the directory /mnt/HD_a4, b4, c4, d4 of each drive also the following files with this structure for non RAID configuration:

1. File "ChkSCSI"
SCSI0 1
SCSI1 2
SCSI2 3
SCSI3 4

2. File "dsk_mapping"
sda
sdb
sdc
sdd

3. File "raidtab2web"
status,0
filesystem,ext3
nonraid,sda2,sdb2,sdc2,sdd2
md0,null,null,null,null,null,null,null
md1,null,null,null,null,null,null,null
md2,null,null,null,null,null,null,null
md3,null,null,null,null,null,null,null

After a restart the Volume_1 - 4 were available and the DNS343 is not asking to format any drives - great!

This is the quickest and safest way (for me) to add a new drive to the DNS343 before I spend days of copying data from one to another storage.

Big Thanks to xatus! :)

has anyone posted this issue to the funplug forum yet?

http://forum.dsmg600.info/viewforum.php?id=10

i would also try posting it here as well:

http://forum.nas-tweaks.net/index.php?CNSESS=9704389425be4f88cdee23d0a08dd66b&board=4.0

my guess is that if you posted this entire string to one/both of these forums, you will get the answers quickly.

FYI be prepared for a much more "direct" conversation on these forums, and less patience for n00b questions. i learned that the hard way.

p.s. this is why i always fill up my DNS's with HDD's day 1, and replace them all at the same time. adding HDD's to these units has been an ongoing problem since day 1.

hd_verify -wto update the serial numbers automatically
would you like to give it a try?

I have just bought a new DNS-343, installed 2 1TB drives and updated to firmware 1.03. It was my intention to finally install 4 drives in RAID 5 and I wanted to experiment just to see what happens. I noted that other brands listed the ability to upgrade RAID on the fly but there is nothing specific for this model.

Initially I formatted the 2 drives in RAID1. Unit works and I installed the BT add on.

I added drive 3, my boot option was to format it as a stand alone drive. I skipped that but selected RAID 5. It proceeded to iniitalise drive 3 then formatted all 3 drives.

I added drive 4 and again my option was to format it as a stand alone drive. I skipped that and selected RAID 5. It proceeded to initialise drive 4 and then formatted all 4 drives.

Presumably, but not tested, had I chosen the stand alone drive option it would have formatted the other drives anyway.

I did not load any real data on the drives except some test files when in RAID 1 configuration.

The book states that should one drive in RAID 5 then the unit will auto repair. Can I believe this? I have a cold feeling in my stomach.

General case for DNS-343 ver 1.03: to format only newly inserted drive (not all disks!) chose menu "Advanced" - "RAID" - "RAID Configuration" - "Configure Newly Inserted Hard drive(s)".
But if this is not possible, it is necessary to reset NAS settings with 1st drive inserted. After that this feature appears and it will be possible to use "Configure Newly Inserted Hard drive(s)".

Additional practice:
I've the same issue with destroyed data in summer 2009: when I tried to format only 2nd drive in Standart mode, NAS formated both drives! 2 month I was recovering data with different methods and no results!
And now I back up data on 1st drive, reset NAS settings and insert 2nd drive. Then press "Configure Newly Inserted Hard drive(s)" and finally it formated only 2nd drive, not all drives!!!

Please, inform in this topic if you don't have the same effect.

This has formatted the wrong drive TWICE so far.

First time was when i had a drive in slot 1 and i added a new drive in slot 4.

Second time was when i had a drive in slot 1 and i added a new drive in slot 2.

Both times, the serial number on the admin screen was the correct one to be initialized and formatted. (ie. Slot 4 and Slot 2 respectively)

Both times, the other drive was formatted.

DLINK Engineers, Please fix this longstanding issue.

I have also lost data on more than one occasion.  I've reverted to an old trick when formatting- PHYSICALLY DISCONNECT DRIVES EXCEPT THE ONE BEING FORMATTED.

additionally, it creates the problem where drive format is expected each time the device is rebooted and some functions are not enabled (I.E. iTunes share is greyed out).

Running hd_verify -w corrected the magic number issue and all is good.

UPDATE: Used hd_verify -w a second time, installing a second drive, works no problems yet.

My current drive addition routine:

1 - Power down
2 - Install new drive
3 - Restart and select formatting options
4 - PHYSICALLY REMOVE OTHER DRIVES (I.E. Those not being formatted)
5 - Confirm formatting
6 - After formatting is complete, reconnect all drives, restart and skip formatting dialog box.
7 - Use FunPlug to telnet in and run  hd_verify -w to cure magic number issue (stop receiving 'new drive installed' prompt)
8 - Restart   VOILA!

Please post your experiences related to adding drives if you choose to use this method.  I MAKE NO GUARANTEES!  USE THIS INFO AT YOUR OWN RISK!

I have a DNS-343 with 3 HDDs configured as standard volumes in slots 1,2,3 and am planning to add a 4th HDD to slot 4.  I've never installed fun plug and the first three volumes were never removed from the DNS-343 since the initial configuration.

Will adding a 4th volume to slot-4 cause any potential problems?  The first 3-HDDS contain 6TB of data, and although the data is backed up 2x, I need to make sure this works the first time around.

Tried the 'hd_verify -w', all it did was to remove the formatting dialog box. Volume_2 (2x800G on RAID1 with data) still not visible. What else can I do to make Volume_2 visible again without formatting and losing all my data? Thanks.

Background:
Using desktop with OS X 10.6.4, DNS-343 on 1.04
Initially, it was
Volume_1 - Seagate 1TB (Standard) (Slot 1)
Volume_2 - 2 x WD 800GB (RAID1) (with impt data) (Slots 3 & 4)
(no ffp installed)
Was working fine until the Seagate 1TB died.
Replaced Volume_1 with WD 1.5TB.
Wanted to eliminate the possibility of formatting the wrong HDDs, I removed the 2xWD 800GB  from the DNS-343 and formatted the WD 1.5TB HDD (from hindsight, bad move). When inserted the 2x800GB HDD, Web interface detected as new HDD and prompted to format them.
Tried the following:
Skipped the dialog box (still can't see Volume_2)
Reset the DNS343 to factory settings (Web interface still prompts to format HDDs and still can't see Volume_2)
Installed ffp on new Volume_1 and ran hd_verify -w (Web interface stopped prompting BUT still can't see Volume_2)

Not a UNIX user, I cd /mnt/HD_a4 and did a ls but I don't see the filename starting with .xxx.
7. Go into /mnt/HD_a4, there is file with name starting with dot, something like .x37c9E.
Structure of this file looks like:
magic: 079e9865cf36a576c91.............
mac: <mac address of nas>
node: sda
p2: NORMAL * <hdd serial1> * <hdd serial2> * <hdd serial3>

Found this in another forum but I don't understand the steps, appreciate if someone could elaborate.

you would need an extra hdd (HD_a2) to install and boot fun plug with so you can telnet into the dns343 to make the changes

edit this into /ffp/etc/fun_plug.init
mkdir /mnt/HD_b2
mkdir /mnt/HD_c2
mount /dev/sdb2 /mnt/HD_b2
mount /dev/sdb2 /mnt/HD_c2
echo '/mnt/HD_b2 10.0.0.0/24(rw,no_root_squash)' >>/etc/exports
echo '/mnt/HD_c2 10.0.0.0/24(rw,no_root_squash)' >>/etc/exports
./ffp/start/unfsd restart

reboot and you would be able to use the data on the two hdd from dns343 using the nfs protocol.

Am I able to see my data in Volume_2 from shell and just copy out the directory using cp command (like in the DOS days)

Please advise what else to do. Thank you.

Referring to the earlier post, I checked in the directory /mnt/HD_a4, b4, c4. Something doesn't look right:

1. File "ChkSCSI"
SCSI0 1
SCSI1 0
SCSI2 2
SCSI3 3

2. File "dsk_mapping"
sda

3. File "raidtab2web"
status,0
filesystem,ext3
nonraid,sda2
md0,null,null,null,null,null,null,null
md1,null,null,null,null,null,null,null
md2,null,null,null,null,null,null,null
md3,null,null,null,null,null,null,null

Help!

A big THANKS to Jack-TBJ. I was desperate to get back my data and decided to edit the dsk_mapping and raidtab2web files with my non-existant knowledge of unix, making reference to Jack-TBJ's earlier post.

Made a copy of dsk_mapping and raidtab2web, added sdb & sdc to the 2nd and 3rd line respectively to dsk_mapping in dir /mnt/HD_a4, b4 & c4. Added sdb2 & sdc2 to 3rd line of raidtab2web to the same directories.

I can see my Volume_2 again! Phew!

Learnt a valuable lesson from this ordeal and also through reading several forums. RAID is NOT for backup! RAID is for availability.

Thanks Jack-TBJ, this worked for me. But for some reason my volume 4 keeps being assigned the name volume 2!

Hi,
My Volume_1 is failing (on a 1TB drive) and am looking to upgrade it to a 2TB drive. I have fun plug installed on the current configuration. Will the steps be the same as outlined by Jack?

Follow up on my track..Put the new disk (as Volume 1), formatted, added ffp to it and shut down.
The added all the other disks and restarted.
hd_verify gave an error.
ran hd_verify -w and then followed Jack's last steps.
Worked like a charm!
Thanks much
