Author Topic: How does one install the driver without installing the connection wizard?  (Read 11220 times)

in my experience, the dlink proprietary wizard conflicts with windows vista to such an extent that it will cause vista's network and sharing center to freeze. both the wizard and the network and sharing center will show that the pc is connected (therefore password verified and all that) but that the network is not authenticated, or something to that effect, and network access is not available.

SOMETIMES killing the wizard and then opening the network and sharing center will fix the connection, but not always. after just a short while, this seems to result in a bsod.

there is only one way to kill the network and sharing center and that is to restart explorer and curiously, the sidebar never fully reloads and becomes this dead white space.

this is for a fresh install of vista -literally only hours old. service pack 1 was not yet installed.

furthermore, i noticed to great annoyance that the network and sharing center conflict somehow also killed the os' ability to recognize ethernet connectivity as well. the ethernet was working perfectly fine just moments before for downloading os and program updates. this flaw remained even after uninstalling the drivers and the dlink wizard. i tried reconnecting the cable, reseating the gigabit card, resetting the cmos, nothing worked. this, combined with the sudden and unexpected influx of bsod (otherwise inexplicable; i see someone else has mentioned that this adapter is causing bsod on vista) caused me to reformat and reinstall vista.

these problems do not happen initially upon first install. you have to restart to see it in action.

given that this product is sold as vista ready, is there a proper way of getting this device working in vista? is there a way to only install the drivers and not the connection wizard?

thanks!

EDIT: the adapter i have is 1.80 version B2. i specifically requested this model from the retailer because i thought this version was free of problems.

You can try installing the drivers via the Computer/Management/Device Manager. I'm not sure if this will only install the driver only or driver and the wizard.

if it triggers the install exe, and the exe is used, then the exe will surrepticiously install the connection wizard. i know because i've tried letting windows find the drivers and having failed at that, to try to install them through the device manager, in hopes that the wizard would not be installed as well.

i think i need vista to somehow find and install the drivers by itself.

EDIT: this is for vista business 32bit

See if you can remove the install.exe from the installation location. Put the entire driver on the desktop and unpack it and remove the .exe from the folder.
