Title: High ping spikes when Enable DNS Relay is ticked. (DIR-815)
Post by: Tsaalyo on April 30, 2013, 01:34:32 PM
Hello.

I was having very high ping spikes (up to 2000ms) in my online gaming. I even had high spikes (up to 80ms) just pinging my router. It happened with every computer on the network. After several weeks, I narrowed it down to one thing: Enable DNS Relay. I unticked that, and instantly the spikes went away.

However, my brother's Blackberry Playbook has been acting up now that DNS Relay is disabled. Basically, every day, the internet on that thing screeches to a halt, forcing him to reconnect to the network. It's basically a minor inconvenience, but it's one I want to correct. If I turn on DNS Relay again, the ping spikes will return. Interestingly, I switched ISPs during this time. I'm on cable now. I used to be on DSL with a different router, yet I had the exact same problem. The blackberry is probably integral to this problem.

So I'd like to know if there's anything I can do to make DNS Relay work properly, allowing his stupid Blackberry to work, while maintaining the integrity of the network.

Thanks.

Some info, since people always seem to ask for them...
ISP: Cogeco Cable internet
Region: Southern Ontario
Firmware Version : 2.00 Tue 03 Apr 2012

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=47512.0) version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

Has a Factory Reset been performed?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53008.0)
For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS (http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html) or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53222.0)
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature. Tools/Time.

Hardware Version: B1
Firmware Version: 2.00 Tue 03 Apr 2012
Region: Southern Ontario
Factory Reset: No. The problems started with my previous router/ISP and persisted with this one right out of the box.

For your suggestions, I've bolded everything that I had to modify to meet your suggestions. If it's not bolded, it was already set like that.

ISP: Cogeco Cable
ISP Modem Mfr. and model #: RCA DMC425
ISP MTU: 1500
QOS disabled.
Advanced DNS Services off.
Unicasting was not selected. Turned it on.
Using Google's DNS servers, already deemed them fastest for me.
I tried to give the playbook a reserved IP, but once I turned Unicasting on, it disappeared from my list of dynamic DHCP connections, even though I just used it. o.o
All devices are set to auto obtain IPs.
IPv6 is set to Local Connection Only.
TCP and UDP set to Endpoint Independent.
uPnP was selected, Multi-cast Streaming was selected for both IPv4 and IPv6. Disabled it for IPv6.
WPS is selected, but I'd rather leave it on. It allows me to most easily connect with my dlink range extender. Besides, this problem occurred with my previous router, which had no WPS. Unless I no longer need WPS now that my range extender is already set up. Do I?
WAN port speed set to auto.
NTP server feature used.

I can't tell you just yet if your suggestions will have worked, since it takes about 12 hours for the blackberry to start acting up. I'll let you know tomorrow.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48327.0)
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/) to find out. How many?

If you had problems with a prior router and your having problems with this one, then the problem probably is else where. ISP service to the modem or your surrounding environment conditions.

No problem, the Blackberry seems to be working fine now. The stuff you suggested yesterday must have worked. Ping spikes are still gone. Thanks. :)
