Advice on extended connection
« on: December 07, 2009, 12:02:27 PM »

So I have this router, using the latest firmware. I have no issues with the connection wirelessly anywhere in the house EXCEPT for one bedroom. Maybe the bedroom is built like a tank. I've only had issues with this room.

The router is located downstairs and the bedroom is above it to the side. If I had to put a distance on it, it'll be maybe 20 feet away. When using a wireless connection in the room, the signal reads 3-4 bars at most. Though it'll read that it's connected consistently, the net browsing will lag or will act as if there is no connection some of the times until refresh is hit. Network shared files will not be there as if connection is lost. Again this only happens in that room on any laptop.

I've messed with the settings numerous times. It's definitely not the setting, not the firmware, etc. I've even replaced one of the antennas with an D-link 2.4ghz Omni directional 7dbi indoor antennae. No change.

I'd put the router upstairs but modem connections are only available in bedrooms. My house is built so that running wires up and down the stairs won't be easy with out some kind of expensive indoor rewiring.

So, I'm seeking advice on how to deal with this situation of mine. Is there some kind of access point I can acquire with out it being connected through a wire? A range booster? Ethernet is not an option.. that'll just be pointless on a laptop.

Sounds like the house has some good insulation and other stuff possible in the floors like wiring and piping? I've got a Mac Airport Extreme and the 4500. The Airport is doing all the B and G wireless and the 4500 is all N mode. My next door neighbor is seeing about 3-4 bars on his Mac Laptop. Saw this the other day, this is good for him. I haven't tried the 4500 since my Mac LT is using the N mode only. I'm seeing full sign bars on my Mac LT, and i'm in the living room and the router in the back office on the same level, not downstairs. I'd say im about 15 feet away. Being downstairs and having more stuff might have a signal impact. I presume that if you are in the same room as the 4500 with ur LT and you get full signal? How about moving the extended antenna as close to the room your wanting to connect? Some antenna's are directional, make sure it's either omni or directional and if directional, point it to the room.

One thing that I don't think the 4500 wireless has is a relay capability like the Apple Airports. I have a Extreme and a Express and the express can be configured to connect to the Extreme base to act as a signal relay. In effect extending the range of the base station. Might have to get a relay or extender unit and put in in the room if it can connect to the 4500.

Let us know if this helps you in a direction any.

There are basically 3 bedrooms upstairs. The master bedroom is the one that has issues with connection, the other 2 are perfectly fine with the same amount of bars as master. The 2 other bedrooms don't have the lagging internet issue if connected wireless. However once stepping into the master bedroom, connection is wonky. The distance is pretty much the same. 20 ft, but the opposite way.

The antennae' are pointed to the master.

All the pcs/laptops are running windows xp and windows vista currently. What would you suggest I use to help connection in the master.

Hmm. well I just did a poor man measure of foot and foot going from my living room to my back office where the 4500 is located and it's about 30 ft. There is one room separating me from the living room and the back office which is down the hallway. I'm getting full signal here. Yes it's not downstairs like you. So here I am downstairs in my basement now, opposite from the office and router which is upstairs and still have full connection via wireless.

What kinda of phone system is in the master bedroom? Any wireless anything in the master bedroom? Are there any electrical boxes on the outside of the master bedroom, those can cause some interference. Was the MB specially built? Any steel beams or studs? Theres got to be something about that room thats preventing the signal or interfering. Sounds like you might need a relay unit in the bedroom that will connect to the 4500 and relay the signal inside that room.

One thing you could try if you have a friend or buddy with a different wireless router to borrow and put it in place of the 4500. See if that does the same thing. I presume it should give the same issues and would at least tell you that the 4500 is ok. I kinda doubt is the 4500. Just sounds like signal interference in that room and need to find out what in the room could be causing that and or put in a relay.

Well there's nothing in the master bed room that would interfere with the signal other than the ventilation under and over the bedroom and the thick walls.

Can you suggest a relay unit I may look into?
