playon bandwidth slow - pointing at 655
« on: June 14, 2011, 05:34:41 PM »

I have playon and the online bandwidth is showing slow. I did speedtest and it shows 20mbps, but the playon says below 2.  No windows (7) security is enabled and avast is turned off. i rebooted and get the same results.

I also cannot do any updates for my windows 7. I try and it says that it cannot do the update. I check the logs and all of the updates were done fine up to when I installed the 655; now it doesn't work.

playon support says check network, which I have done, and the only thing left is the 655. i checked through the settings that I was helped with befopree on this forum and everything seems to be normal

Help!

What ISP service do you have? DSL or Cable?
What ISP modem do you have? Stand alone or does it have a built in router by chance?
How are you connecting to the router? Wired or Wireless?
What wireless modes are you running? Mixed? Single?
What FW version is currently loaded?
Any cordless phones in the house?

Setup Reserved (Static) IP addresses on the router for your devices.
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Ensure Advanced DNS Service is disabled if you have this option.
Ensure DNS Relay is enabled.

Your patience is appreciated. You must get frustrated with people like me who leave out EVERYTHING.

anyhow:
What ISP service do you have? Comcast
DSL or Cable? Cable
What ISP modem do you have? RCA DCM315
Stand alone or does it have a built in router by chance? stand alone I am pretty sure
How are you connecting to the router? my PC with Playon is connected via ethernet cable
Wired or Wireless? Wired
What wireless modes are you running? Mixed? Single? not sure. I have two other computers accessing the 655 wirelessly, but only for internet access and only once in a while (for email and simple browsing)
What FW version is currently loaded? the most recent  2.00NA , Wed, 12, May, 2010
Any cordless phones in the house. yes.

Setup Reserved (Static) IP addresses on the router for your devices.
I think I did this to solve my last problem.
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
they both say 0.0.0.0
Ensure Advanced DNS Service is disabled if you have this option. It is.
Ensure DNS Relay is enabled. Not sure how to do this and don't see it

The Setup > Manual Internet Setup page will always show 0.0.0.0 for the DNS servers unless you have physically enetered them here.
Check on the Status page for your actual DNS servers

I sent a support request to Playon which includes a file that has some information about the problems the program is having with my network. here is what they said:

Thank you for the follow-up!  It appears there is still something installed on your PC that is actively preventing PlayOn from registering itself correctly.  Here is an example of what we're seeing in the logs:

WARNING: Unable to bind web server to port 62478: An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions, trying port 0

This generally indicates that PlayOn is attempting to start up the system service to allow the incoming devices to connect, but is being denied access to start up on that port.  It is possible your security software may have made changes to the local SYSTEM account and the SYSTEM account does not have the permissions it needs to start the service up correctly.

I would recommend manually entering in DNS ip addresses that are found on the status/wan section page into the Setup/Internet/Manual to be sure.
DNS relay is found on the Setup/Networking page.

It's possible that you might need to set up a application or port forwarding rule for this application to connect using the port(s) its asking for.

Also might set your firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

These routers work well if they are set up properly. They work just as good as other mfr routers. And if you think that other mfr don't have the same problems, check out their forums. There just as active or more with problems. If your not hear to help then I recommend moving on Alien. Were here to help each other and not fan the flames. Help us help you.

get away from this kind of hardware buy an netgear wndr3700 or sitecom wl309 these are much better.

The DIR-655 is supported by another device I have (the WD TV Live) and the netgear is not. Besides I had a netgear device before and I didn't like it. The 655 has very high ratings on Newegg and other places so I will stick with it for now. Plus I get really good reception for my secondary wireless PCs. This issue is probably user-error.

my bad.
I apologize for not mentioning this sooner (I honestly forgot) but the Playon people had me remove Avast for my last problem and after that issue was resolved, I forgot to re-install it. During the time While I had no anti-virus, I got one of those “your computer is infected” BS-things from some random web page. It’s the one where there is a phony screen pops up and says it is scanning your PC and shows that you have 500 viruses. Anyhow, I removed it then re-installed Avast. That is what caused this. after running combofix everything is back to normal.

thanks
for your help.

Glad you found the problem and got your PC cleaned up. I recommend MalwareByte as a good back up for removing stuff to. If Avast has a firewall, you might need to add in a rule for that for your Application. Keep us posted. Hope it works well for ya.
