Vlan config in old 1248T
« on: January 25, 2010, 01:37:59 PM »

I have some older 1248Ts, and need to start configuring vlan support.

All of the vlan configuration is in three menu options:
VID Table Setting
-VID selector, checkboxes for all ports
Port VID Setting
-Text entry boxes for each port
Port Egress Setting
-Checkboxes for every port, labeled at the beginning of the row as 'Tag/untag'

the manuals i can find all talk about the newer interface that isnt as confusing at this one, so they arent much help.

these are the Rev A units running 2.01.03
How do i set a port to be tagged/untagged using this revision?

For normal (symmetrical VLANs) simply set their egress settings as you would normally and set their PVID to their untagged VLAN.

>egress settings as you would normally

right, whats this?

ive tried tag/untag on and off, with the untagged port in the PVID field, and the switch refuses to pass traffic.

Ports connecting to PCs should be untagged in their chosen VLAN, ports between VLAN aware devices that will be acting as "trunks" should be tagged on all VLANs that should pass over that link.

right, i understand that.

the options available in the switch do not make it clear how to set that.  for example theres no way to explicitly say "this port is an tagged member of vlan 2" - you can make it a member of VLAN2, and set the PVID to VLAN1, but then what the heck does the Tag/Untag checkbox represent?

Make the PVID the same as the untagged VID,

If it is tagged, check that box.

If untagged, do not check that box.

so then the Port Egress setting is strictly for the Primary VLAN, and the switch defaults to untagged for all other port memberships?

it makes sense, its just not written like that in any documentation i can find.

I think there still may be some confusion, try calling in to our BCS support line and we can have an agent walk you through it.

What do you mean they were unable to assist this is an simple VLAN config, if they can't assist with this they shouldn't be working for BCS support!  PM me the case ID and techs name if you have them.

Hello,

Sorry for re-using an old post, but since it is just exactly like my problem I thought it would be more appropiate to ask here.

I have an old DGS-1248T with an old firmware (1.00). Recently I've been trying to setup Tagged VLANs, but like the problem explained before in this post, it seems to tag every traffic in this port (on every VLAN).

I think it should tag every VLAN but the one specified in Port VID Settings, which should leave Untagged, isn't it?

I can't find any information about this and the manual explains there should be somewhere to specify which port to tag/untag on which VLAN. I think this is only for newer versions of this Switch.

All this leads me to another question: Could I update the firmware of my Switch so I can have this functionality?

Thank you very much in advance and sorry for the inconveniences.

Update away, please!

If the instructions here and in the manual don't suffice and there isn't a particular button that you need to know what it does, then calling BCS support really is your best call.
