Apple Devices and Smart Connect
« on: January 18, 2015, 06:55:07 PM »

After several hours of trial and error I came to the conclusion that there is a problem with the 80mhz radio and a lot of wireless devices. Ive been able to achieve perfect results on other routers so i know its not the radio thats the problem. For anyone experiencing issues especially with apple devices limiting your networks to 20/40 mhz fixes the issue but doing so you NEED to disable smart connect a primary feature of the router. If any link technicians want to email me about the subject feel free to

So with Auto 20/40/80Mhz and Smart Connect, Apple devices don't work?
Could you give more details on what apple devices you have?
What OSs are loaded on each device?
What wireless connection rates are supported by each device?
Are you using same SSID names on each radio or different names?

FYI, some devices don't support 80Mhz channel width. Check with Apple to see what is supported.

ITs not only apple devices but for some reason occurs more frequently on them. I have tried with both a 14' mac book pro running the latest os and also several iPhone running the most current retail os and some unlrelased os version as i develop on the platform. I own several other routers and have found 80mhz working on all. I have attempted keeping all the said as "wifi" and also naming all 3 separately. Connection is stable but 80mhz needs to be disabled.

This is something you should talk to someone on the phone at D-Link. If you have a case #, refer to it so they can keep track and collect valuable data.

FYI, if signals and there is interferences in your environment, some devices may fall back to 40Mhz due to the device and router trying to keep a good connection. This is normal behavior.

I landed here while trying to figure our why my Mac book pro would keep getting high packet loss (over 40%) when connected to this router. once i disabled smart connect and changed the width to 20/40 i have 100% reliable connection. and my other apple devices are also more stable. the only one that was unafected by anything was my 2014 imac which worked perfect regardless of the mode the router was in. I can confirm this bug on both FW 1.0 and 1.02

have had exact same issue with my daughter's iPhone 5s randomly disconnecting, am trying this to see if helps, but am disappointed as this is a primary feature of a very expensive router I just purchased, that otherwise, I'm extremely pleased with....

What iOS is on the 5c?

I didn't notice any issues with my iPhone 6P using iOS8.1.1 and 2007 MBP OSX 10.10.2. I have recently disabled SC and seems to be better over all.

Let us know if disabling SC helps any.

It appears this might be an inherent problem with ALL the Broadcom Smart Connect. In this review THiggins reviewed the Asus RT-AC3200. Last page of his review
he writes, "I noticed the two Apple devices were the most frequent disconnectors, switching to other remembered networks. Once I "forgot" all the in-range stored networks on the i-devices (and other clients for good measure), the disconnects stopped and I was able to run tests to completion."

If anyone is interested, here is THiggins review http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-reviews/32625-asus-rt-ac3200-tri-band-wireless-ac3200-gigabit-router-reviewed?start=5
