External FTP Access
« on: February 25, 2015, 01:14:01 AM »

Hi All.

I have been trying to setup external FTP access to my Dlink DNS 320 NAS for a few months now and have failed each time.

I have an account with No-Ip.com and have forwarded port 80 on my sky router to my NAS and I can access the NAS configuration pages with no problem.

As this was successful I thought i'd enable to FTP server for external access, so first off I enabled the FTP server and forwarded port 20, 21 on my Sky Router, I found this didn't work and I just got timeout errors.

After some reading I found there's a dynamic DNS setup actually on the NAS so under Management-Network Management-Dynamic DNS there's a drop down list for the provider, hostname and username and password I have filled it in with my No-IP account details but it still says its failing to update and obviously I cant FTP into my NAS. I did notice in the dropdown list of providers it says No-IP.DDNS im assuming this is correct?

Does anyone have any thoughts on what I can try next?

Two things.

First check the sky modem/router you have will allow FTP access - some have that blocked for some reason.

Second, you need more than the two handshake ports open. Read the information on http://www.mdjnet.dk/router.html to get some idea of what is required especially how to setup the server and the router.  Even though they have a specific FTP server in mind the general principles are the same.

The sky router has ports 20/21 listed under the port forwarding rules which I have added, previously I have added the passive port range as well, so it appears as though my router will allow it.

I have read through the article and I have done all it states but it still doesnt appear to work.

You have the same port range enabled in the router as you have set on the FTP server in the NAS?

If that is the case then sky might be blocking FTP.  Have you tried to use an FTP client on your computer (FileZilla, for example) to get files from an FTP site on the net (something like ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/)?  If you can download one if the files from there then there is a good chance that FTP should work with your end being the server.  If you can't then the FTP service is blocked either by the router or the ISP.

LAN at home setting
1. Router 192.168.1.1  with DDNS setup  and port forward (important part) and Firewall turn off
2. NAS DNS-320  192.168.1.110 FTP Server Setting as recommend in the manual
3. IP Camera DCS-942L, DCS-5030L install within home LAN. They can send clip, snapshot wtih ftp to NAS (internal ip address 192.168.1.110)
4. My kid will transfer to a student apartment and I want to install Dlink ip camera  WIFI in his room  and ftp clip, snapshot back to our NAS DNS 320 (act like a cloud storage)
4.1 In order to let ip camera at student apartment ftp back to homa NAS, not only DDNS need to be provided in a router , two Port forwards must be added for  an external FTP services
- FTP internal 192.168.1.110 port 21/21  external  21/21
- FTP internal 192.168.1.110 port 55536/55663  external 55536/55663 which is important to make a complete external FTP support
5. Please note that this external FTP service run in a passive mode because IP camera did not provide SSL mode and NAS DNS320 Certificate has been expired.
