Author Topic: 1.22NA - Disconnects, Fails to reconnect!! I HOPE it's not Hardware issue?  (Read 11218 times)

I just got this router few weeks ago .. and Starting to notice some Router problems..

PROBLEMS:
1) Disconnecting from PPPoE and not being able to reconnect
This is the 4th time i noticed the router getting disconnected w/o the capability to resume/reconnect..  this happens every few days..

1st time i encountered that, i updated the FW to 1.22NA as many users reported this fw fixes the problem..i reset the router too after flashing just to make sure.

But even under the new FW this still happened 2 times, and the last time it did, i ran some tests..

TESTS done during it's disconnected state..
The router is remains responsive, but doesnt seem to attempt to reconnect.. logs, wifi, etc all seem to be working fine.. but the PPPoE didnt wana reconnect, it just sits there disconnected forever with the "CONNECT" button active.

i left it like that for hours.. tried rebooting the MODEM to see if that triggers a reconnect.. nothing.

The Logs dont show any new updates too... except for me connecting to the router control panel
eg "Log viewed by IP address 192.168.1.69"

But nothing about the PPPoE / DSL connection..

So i tried to manually push the CONNECT button in the Device INfo page.. Funny, NOTHING HAPPENS.. no reload, no ticks, no status update nothing.. and upon checking the logs, no PPPoE Connection attempt was logged..   so surely something's wrong w/ the ROUTER.. but still didnt wana reboot it.. i just disconnected it from the modem and left it ON..

I pulled out my old TP LINK router, w/ the settings still intact.. and w/o rebooting the MODEM, connected it to the router.. and viola.. PPPoE established instantly!  didnt even have to reboot the modem.. I kept using my TPLINK for 10hours straight keeping the DLINK router ON and on the side only..

I then reconnected the modem back to the DLINK router and still same scenarios as above.. so FINALLY i decided to reboot it..and it CONNECTED AGAIN instantly. DEFINITELY a problem w/ the EXPENSIVE DGL-4500!!!

2) Second problem. FREQUENT DISCONNECTS
During the use of my TPLINK router for over 10 hours (see above) , I noticed 1 thing... I NEVER GOT the FREQUENT DISCONNECTS im getting every day, between 30 minutes to a couple of hours.. it was a regular thing that i've dealt w/ for weeks (back to the time i got my DGL-4500) i guess.. and i thought it was just my bad DSL connection.  but today, i enjoyed a constant 10 hour stable internet connection w/ my TPLINK router!

This test / problem is not yet conclusive, but hey.. i experienced multiple short disconnects on a DAILY basis on the DLINK, and today , just when i decided to use my old router, i got CLEAN / STABLE connection..  it could be COINCIDENCE.. or it could be the DARN DLINK ROUTER!!!!

My only hope.. that this is not Hardware issue.. coz i'd hate to have to send it alll the way back for RMA

Try giving 1.23NA a shot first and see if the problems continue.

Before upgrading, Is you DSL Modem bridged to the 4500 I presume? Just checking. I've seen this before with DSL modems, having frequent disconnects from DSL and it's been the ISP service. Make sure the DSL modem is bridge to the 4500 and your set up fully on the 4500. If your getting disconnects, it's probably due to the DSL being disconnected. Ensure cabling between DSL modem and router are good, try different one to be sure. Shorter the better too.

Review my buddies post here regarding his experiences with DSL:

The modem is bridge mode.. PPPoE is set on the router itself.. as i do so w/ the other router (TPLINK) .. so im pretty sure this isnt an ISP thing.. im just hoping it's not the router's HW .. just some fw prob.. anyway the frequent disconnects im still investigating that if it's really existing only on the DLINK.. but as for the disconnection w/o ability to reconnect as described in my post, well that is for sure CONFIRMED as per my tests.. :(

What FW is currently loaded now? Any chance you can take this router to a friends house and try it there? Just to test...

Another thing you can try is to unbridge the 4500, set the DSL modem back up to route, connect to the 4500 and place the 4500's IP address in the DMZ in the dsl router and see if you get any more disconnects.

hi furryNutz

1st off, your nick is hillarious! haha

it's currently on 1.22NA ..
i will try to let my friend use/monitor it..
unfortunately, i cant do anything w/ the modem, it's ISP issued and password protected..

since rebooting the router it's been connected .. well it usually takes a few days for it to become disconnected and unable to connect again.. mean while i started experiencing frequent disconnects again.. so i decided to start MANUALLY logging every disconnect that i experience w/ it.. and here's what i got this morning:

Quote
08-17-2010 (Tuesday) @ 11:17:20 AM
   PPP network down
reconnected on 11:17:52AM (32s down time)

   PPP network down
recon on 11:17:42PM (31s down time)
PPP network up with IP Address XXX.XX.169.200

definitely something fishy here as it has a pattern of around 30 second disconnection time.. w/c is either a hang time on the router, or the actual / normal time it takes for the router to connect to PPPoE .. if it's the latter then the router probably has split-second PPPoE disconnection from time to time .. and it's not network traffic lock up coz the PPPoE IP changes every time.. so it's a real PPPoE Disconnection .. w/c i still feel is a router issue and im still hoping it's just FW :( :(

Hey Brown,
Ok, This kind of looks similar to what my buddy was doing thru. I would do this, get on the phone with your ISP tech support and see if you can 1st off get a competent rep and have them review logs for you on there end and see if they can see any thing. The router is probably doing the right thing and reporting the disconnection correctly if that is what is happening. If there is a disconnection then it's detecting it from the DSL modem. The router is not going to just drop the connection theoretically. Your ISP should be able to watch and review the connection and see whats going on. Are you sure you are getting a good signal to the DSL Modem? ISP are notorious for tell you, "It's good on our end." Ya that fine but how about the other end? LOL. I went thru this with my buddy before they finally found out it wasn't not the 4500 nor the dsl modem. Lines were not properly set up, filtered and on top of all that, he was beyond the DSL speed limits for being connected to one of the switches as far at feet goes.

I really would check all the dsl lines that you know you can find. Make double sure they are connected properly and filtered if there are any phones on the same line. Is this a phone/dsl line or stand alone dsl line?

Your DSL modem should be password protected however you should have the password as well. I haven't seen this before were the end user doesn't get the password to the modem. That's not a good thing. If they won't give you the pass word then I would go buy your own DSL modem. You can have your own and not pay the rental fee.

If after this and your friend finds the same thing on his network, then you could have a bad 4500. I just don't think so at this point. Let us know.

I had a similar situation with Brighthouse lightning service.  I had them place their modem/router into bridge mode so I did not have to deal with double NATs.  Everything worked great until every time we experienced a loss of power.  When power was restored the modem/router would boot as a router and give an internal ip to my router.  Then it would place itself in bridge mode.  Well by that time, the ips given to my router were no longer accurate.  However, logging into my router and releasing/renewing the was ips took care of it but it was a pain.  I ended up going back to their turbo service.

@FurryNutz and all

Thanks for the feedback guys.. im afraind i may be looking at a bad router, huhuuuh

DISCONNECT w/o being able to reconnect....
 - well, at one time this happened, I did not touch the DSL modem, i only REPLACED the router (hot swap).. kept the DLINK on though, so when i plugged the modem to the TP LINK router, it was able to connect.. REMOVED and RECONNECTED the DLINK and it's the same issue, couldnt get it to automatically connect, and couldnt get it to connect even if i forced it to (non responsive PPPoE window, but everything else is OK).. only when i reboot the router and it's ok..

FREQUENT DISCONNECTS
 - doesnt happen w/ my TPLINK router, will try to lend this router to my friend and see if they experience it..but so far w/ testing w/ other routers, i dont get this.. sooo..

here's my latest logs this afternoon:

Sorry that your seeing this issue man. Yes if you can lend the router to someone on a different network and see if they see the same issue then I would agree it's the router. If you've set up the DSL modem for bridged mode and set up the 4500 router for the DSL access. It is in most part reporting what it's seeing, that the connection is down. We just need to see if this occurs on a different system. I have seen experiences with dsl modems and the signals being down on the DSL ISP side. My buddy has issues with the lines not being filtered right, feeding back on the house phone line and his house being outside the limits of speed and distance from the DSL hub. If these aren't a factor in your situation then you need to see if the router works on a different system for sure. I would call Dlink and talk to them after you verify the router has the same issues else where. Keep us posted.

Who is your ISP and what is the model of your modem? I will need to do some research before I can really be of any help. I am leaning towards how...bahh, ok spent some time digging around after all (I should be sleeping, LOL)

1. Theres some posts on DSLReports that say the DGL-4500 have issues when using PPPoE and bittorrent. A workaround is disabling gamefuel. Since no reason or testing is given, try it, but take it with a grain of salt.

2. It looks like the router is timing out the PPPoE connection. Try setting Maximum Idle Time to 0 and Reconnect Mode to Always on, that can be found at http://192.168.0.1/Basic/WAN.shtml

3.Your using a host name registered to DynDNS for DDNS? More info on this? Seems to be mentioned in the log a few times, wonder if its relevent.

4. Who is your ISP and whats the model of your modem? Do you own or rent it? If the former, I will be more then happy to show you how to crack it. :-)

@Fuzzy

Hi man thanks! I will definitely try my router on another PPPoE network... but i ordered another DGL-4500 (for a friend) and i'll probably test that other router out first..

as w/ ur explanation.. i kinda get it a bit now... and i have a theory (if it's ISP related)..

while TPLINK ignores short drops, DLINK catches and reports it ...

and while on TPLINK, I do not notice short drops and reconnects since it connects as soon as pppOe is back up..

and with DLINK, there's this BANDWIDTH/SPEEDTEST phase during each connect, w/c blocks all internet access for a few seconds while it's conducting the test.. hence i notice the drop (ie. get booted out of Yahoo Messenger, etc)

.... therefore to test this theory, IS THERE A WAY TO TELL THE ROUTER NOT TO DO THESE BADNWDITH TESTS at the time of establishing CONNECTION?

@Triken
thanks so much for taking the time to read around and stuff...

here are my replies

Yes, but as you says, its quite possible the old router reacts differently to short interuptions ot the modem. It its kind of like the equivalent of a T3 with a cable modem. Thats why I suggested try changing those two settings. One is how often it checks to see if your PPPoE connection is up, and one is how it tries to connect. Honestly though, since I have no real life experiance with this, I would just try expermenting. Set the Max Idle time to 0, wait a day or so, and see if its better, change it to 30, see if it gets better, change the reconnect mode, see what happens. If there was some difference between the two routers, that would likly be it. Probably the two routers had different settings there by default.

I would agree. DDNS wouldnt stop your PPPoE connection. Just when I saw that odd DNS server, at first it actually looked like a worm. LOL

Try going here

Username: ADSL
Password: expert03

Or

Username: ZXDSL
Password: ZXDSL

(If you cannot logon using the user name and password combinations provided above, you may need to reset the modem by long-pressing the ‘reset’ button to the default factory setting.)

Be careful with resetting though, there are probably some settings saved in there put in by the tech when he installed it. Most likly its just username and password and stuff, but fair warning. Hopefully the default passwords work. Here more info one what we would want to do.

BayanDSL Forum

Heres some suggestions from a Mod on that forum:
1) Check if your modem is near any of the following devices: TV sets (CRT Monitors also), UPS, AVRs, transformers, high powered lamps, huge speakers, base of wireless phones, refrigerators, air con, routers (if you own one, it is not advisable that it is inches beside the modem, 12-24 inches distance is recommended), and other similar devices.
2) Check also if the phone cable connecting the modem to the ADSL filter for any bites, exposed wires or irregularities.
3) Check also the brown cable connecting the phone jack to the box outside of your house for any irregularities, bite marks, or exposed wires.
4) Check also if the phone cable connecting the modem to the ADSL filter is the correct length (roughly three meters).
5) If you have a carpet like table cloth where you place the modem, better place a thick book in between as this can cause static electricity and thus affect your internet connection.
6) Make sure that the modem is in a well ventilated area.
7) Check if the phone cable connecting the modem to the ADSL filter is mingling with many wires coming from other appliances. If it does, better isolate or segregate them and move the modem's phone cable away from the other wires.
8) If you use phone extensions, please remove them as the ADSL filter supplied during the installation can only handle one phone unit.
