Problems have arisen since purchasing a new laptop with Windows 7.  The problem seems erratic.  The laptop connects to file servers on the network, but often cannot connect to the network.  If it connects, often connection is lost when clicking to a new page.

Usual error message:  "Windows can’t communicate with the device or resource (primary DNS server)"

Network  map shows communication lost between ADSL and network.

Direct Hard wire connection to internet through ADSL works without issue.  Hardwire connection through DIR-655 same as wireless: erratic, error messages.  This message posted from another wireless router, specifics not known, connected without issue, on-line for 3 hours without problems.

IP address: no difference between using automatically obtained or assigned IP address
DNS server: no difference between using automatically obtained or assigned IP address

Router setup numerous times using CD ROM set up program.
Firmware updated to the most recent version.

Gone to tech support several times; can get the PC to connect and once done, tech support says its working only to disconnect within a few minutes.

What must I do to get this DIR-655 router working on a regular basis?

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.

Turn off SHORT GI and WMM Enable under Advanced Wireless.

Some other things to try:
What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?


What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

If your having the issue with wired and wireless, that rules out wireless. If having the problem with multiple PC, that rules out PC issues. If your not having the problem direct to the modem that rules out obvious modem issues (but not less then obvious issues). A couple questions:

1. What IP does your router get when you connect it to the modem?
2. When you said

did you mean you can connect to your local internet but not the internet?
3. When you lose the connection on one computer, do you lose it on the other at same time?
4. Does it come back without any troubleshooting? Or must you power cycle?

1.  The Windows 7 map shows the the router and the ADSL with the same address:  192.168.0.1.  I don't understand this; however, it appears that the router is communicating to the ADSL during setup.

2. When the router disconnects from the internet, the drives on the file server are still active and usable

3. Only the Windows 7 laptop has this issue.  The hardwired desktop does not have this issue nor does the wireless connected MAC.

4. It sometimes comes back after fiddling with the Windows network map; sometimes after closing the browser,  sometimes not at all, sometimes after 1/2 hour on its own.  Quite erratic.  Repowering the router and the ADSL modem doesn't seem to make a difference.

What kind of modem do you have?

Sounds like your modem is a modem/router gateway and it has the same IP range and gateway of the dlink. And its probably messing with Network discovery on the Windows 7 machine (XP doesn't have it) giving you a 169. It might be a easy fix though, I just need to know what modem you have and its default config (I assume you didn't change anything there?)

At the end of the day, I found that one of the kids had left a wireless router plugged for their computer, then moved out.  Had been there for quite a while, & didn't affect Windows XP. Once discovered and disconnected, all problems disappeared.

The last part "I've learned a lot" made my night. Thanks. Getting frusterated/mad/pissed at the router while you working on it is natural, but at the end of the day if you didn't learn anything, what was the point. Awsome attitude. ::thumbs up::
