Few Messages to System Log
« on: May 08, 2015, 02:45:16 PM »

I replaced my old DI-624 router for the DIR-880L.  The DI-624 had great logging ability which I could easily see which web requests going outbound are blocked and which requests the router was blocking from the internet.   The DIR-880L system log seems to have 3 sections: [System], [Firewall & Security], [Router Status].  I only see information under the [System] section and no entries pertaining to website filter rules or general Default Deny actions by the router. Also, many of the log entries are cryptic, like: (885)action 1,major 8,minor 0) -- what the heck does that mean?

This is problem because I need to know what the router is blocking.   Is there some way to have the router be more verbose or at least show which website filter rules are being hit and by which http request?  Also, how do you decipher (885)action 1,major 8,minor 0) ?

For example, the DI-624 showed this info for blocked string: '****'
-> DNS answer for blocked URL "www.<a-****-site>.com"   3x.xxx.xxx.xxx
-> blocked URL "/****-categories/18-" src:192.168.0.102:64884 dst:20x.xx.xx.xx:80 ****
-> Blocked to access web site src:192.168.0.113:1130 dst:17x.xxx.xxx.xx:80 <a-****2-site>com

Lastly, I set up a syslog reader and it doesn't show anything more than what gets emailed (as would be expected).

Thanks!

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

The DIR-880Ls UI design is more simplified since the DI and DIR series routers. Some of the advanced features seen on the older generation routers may not be available on these new generation routers. I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

Here's the info you are asking for:

DIR-880L    HW:A1    FW:1.04WW
I am located in California.

This DIR-880L has essentially the same features as my old DI, even more like schedules.  It's just the logging data that it is lacking.

I will give the phone support a call and post here what I find.

thanks!

Thank you for the feed back. Let them know your concerns and ask them to add more logging features. Let us know how it goes.

Called support.  They said that new DLINK routers (consumer models) do not log detailed information like the older DI series (e.g., blocked URLs, etc).  They think it's too much information for the average user to handle.  So, if I want the same level of detail to be reported to the log as my DI-624 I need to get a business class router.  Newer isn't always better.

Well for home users, maybe newer isn't however for average home users, I agree that probably isn't alot of use for logs now days. Most things are automatic and home users just want to set it up and go. The DI may have logging abilities that you are used to, however is behind on techonology.

Good Luck.
