DIR-816L-wierd WAN disconnects
« on: July 12, 2018, 12:41:55 PM »

My sister needed a new router when her last one failed. I got her a DIR-816L on clearance at Staples. Seemed to work well at first but after a week or 2 it had no internet connection, never had this problem with the old router. I went to her house and my phone connected to her wireless but I couldn't access anything on the internet, the internet indicator on the DIR-816L was not lit. I power cycle rebooted her cable modem and the DIR-816L and still had the same problem, no internet. I disconnected all the wires, there is only a RG-6 coax on the modem and an Ethernet cable from it to the router and the power cables. This time I had internet. A week or 2 later, same thing, I went to her house and repeated the same process, same thing, no internet until I pull all the cables. This time I changed the Ethernet cable thinking it might be bad. A week or so later same thing. Repeated the same process and it worked. It happened again last night. They power cycled everything to no avail. I went over, walked in had WiFi connection but no internet again. This time I only pulled the Ethernet cable out of the back of the router, pushed it back in and the little globe internet LED indicator lit up instantly and the internet was working. I told her to just pull the Ethernet cable out and push it back in next in to see it it starts working again but she has had 2 strokes so likely won't remember.
I've never run into anything that a power cycle reboot didn't reset, until now. It's as though the router refreshes it's connection with the modem when the Ethernet cable is replugged but I would think a power cycle reboot would do the same thing. Anybody ever run into this issue with the DIR-816L before.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Try setting the port speed to 100Mb. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

I'll answer what I can now and confirm the rest next time I'm at her house and can log on to the box...
I have the box it came in here, according to the tag on the box it is H/W Ver : B1 F/W Ver 2.05. I seem to recall that when I set it up I checked and it had the latest firmware listed on the D-Link website but I'll double check and if it isn't latest, I'll update it.
I'm in Nova Scotia Canada, ISP is Eastlnk, It is Cable internet. Advertised speed is 100 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up but Speed test is 120 Mbps down and 22 Mbps up, I'm with the same provider and my speed test results are the same.
Not sure the modem model, I'll get that when I'm there, but the previous router worked for a year without this issue.
Thanks for the reply, I'll post the other info as soon as I can get it.

I updated theDIR-816L firmware from 2.05 to 2.06.B09_BETA, the most recent on the site. Hopefully the WAN disconnects go away.
The WAN port speed is set to AUTO 10/100.
The cable modem is an Arris CM820

I would set 100Mb only.

Let us know how it goes...
