No crashes or reboots, just a lower speed.
« on: March 12, 2015, 10:43:12 PM »

Hi,

New here, just received my DIR-880L from Dell today.  Wanted to pipe in and will see what happens with this QOS issue, but wanted to mention my first day experience.

I'm not running a large number of devices at once, just one Win 8.1 laptop, a couple of MacBooks, couple of smart phones (iPhone & BB), a android tablet, couple of printers, and have my TV and Blu-Ray box hard wired.

Decided to rewire everything I had hard wired from Cat5e to Cat6a, set up the router, and tested with my new Dell.  I have Comcast blast service which gets 125Mbps.  Wired I was getting the promised 125mbps.  With my old N300 router on wireless I would get 15Mbps to 40Mbps on a good day.  This afternoon on the 880L on 5Ghz I was getting 119Mbps to 124Mbs!

After my wife got home I set up her iPhone and MacBook for the new router, and with everything wireless in the house on I set up QOS.  Now that everyone is in bed I was playing more with the configuration of the router, registered the router, joined this forum...etc.  When I went to run speedtest again I noticed my 5Ghz giving me only 67Mbps to 83Mbps (lower end after I did a modem and router reboot).  No crashes or reboots, just a lower speed.

After reading this thread I took my highest device (the Dell) off of QOS and speed tested with the same results (75Mbps give or take a few).  I took everything else off of QOS and now I back to getting 119Mbps to 124Mbs....

So, I'm not sure if I would benefit much from using QOS, but it looks like I was suffering with it.  Like I said, I'll keep an eye and see if there is a solution.  Oh and yes I updated to the latest firmware right after setup, while I was still hard wired to the router.

1.) Firmware:
Current Firmware Version:
1.02, Tue 11 Nov 2014

Current Firmware Date:
2014-11-11 14:04:00

2.) Connected to router: Wireless

3.) Factory Reset:  Did not perform one before or after Firmware update, did FW update wired, after receiving yesterday, after quick set up.  Did perform one tonight.

4.) ISP: Comcast/Cable

5.) Modem: Motorola SB6141

6.) Cable: Cable between modem and router is Cat6a

7.) MTU:  1500

Still observing same behavior.  About a 30-40Mbps (avg about 78Mbps +/- around 3 on 5Ghz with QOS 116 +/- around 3 without ) if anything is on QOS.  I don't know how QOS is determined.  Is it dynamic or is it reserving a % of the available downlink speed for each QOS tier?

I did a quick look at the Amazon.com reviews and found this:
Quote
5.0 out of 5 stars  Great device, even better telephone support!, October 10, 2014
By Booksnme

This review is from: D-Link Wireless AC1900 Dual Band WiFi Gigabit Router (DIR-880L) (Personal Computers)

Fantastic Device! ..................The only hiccup I encountered was when I tired using the QOS settings in the router interface. They let you manually designate priorities for traffic as Highest, High and Medium. What I didn't expect was that this would divide my download traffic full time between the specified devices. My download speed test results were almost half of what I expected so I called D-Link Support. The Rep there (Ford, ID AR004620) was wonderful! He quickly and professionally walked me through troubleshooting steps until he figured out that I had manually set the QOS heirarchy. When he had me clear those settings... BANG! My Download speeds went back up to where they should be. Now I've spoken with tech support people that didn't even seem to hear me, like I wasn't needed for the call. This Rep, Ford, heard everything I said, addressed every question I had and made sure I understood what was going on at every step of the way. So for product AND support I give D-Link 5 stars!

Not sure what he means by manually set the QOS hierarchy...... I dragged and dropped...

So are you getting ISP speeds with out any QoS configurations?

On wireless 5Ghz yes...it's not always maxed, but is within 10Mbps of the 125Mbps tier max.  Just ran a test on 5Ghz and got 126Mbps (52Mbps on 2.4Ghz).  There is nobody on my 5Ghz channel.  2.4Ghz is a little crowded, but I spent the last year on ch 11 and most of the neighborhood is on 1 or 6.  The DIR-880L is running on auto at the moment, but has stayed on 11 since  I powered it on.  I think there is only one neighbor I can detect that operates 5Ghz.  Checked my wireless hardware settings and changed my battery wireless to max performance (before testing yesterday).

Seems that maybe the issue is with your 2.4Ghz surroundings. Wired testing is preferred to accurately test ISP Speed.

Well, all the testing with and without QOS was on 5Ghz.  Could interference on 2.4ghz drag down 5Ghz when QOS is used?  That review I found on amazon seems to indicate D-link may be aware of the behavior.

What channel are you using on 5Ghz?
What section of QoS are you using? Highest? High or Medium?
Does a wired PC placed in the QoS section exhibit the same thing?

Please test a wired connection to see if you notice any similarities.

Ok, got my 880L back today and it's set up. I did some preliminary testing with my Mac Book Pro on 5ghz and upstairs in a different room about 20 feet away. Single was ok but not in same room. I set up the Mac in Highest QoS section and ran speed tests with and with out the MBP in the QoS, Download was about -4Mb less from 50Mb however i'm not confident speed with Speedtest.net being that its high traffic time frame here and I usually don't test unless i'm in same room so results should be taken with a grain of salt. As for UP, speeds were spot on at 3Mb which is what I pay for so no speed differences with and with out QoS. I'll run more testing in the next day or two while in same room. Been a long day.

FW is v1.02 current.

Just completed the hard wired tests.  Without QoS, 124/125Mbps down and 12Mbps up.  With QoS, 84/85Mbps down and 12Mbps up.  Tried it with just my Win 8.1 laptop in the Highest QoS, with it in Highest and three other devices split between High and Medium, and with nothing in Highest and the other three where I said the were before.  Also tried it with the hardwired laptop in Medium and my tablet in Highest, with a couple of smartphones in High and got the same results.  Got 84/85Mbps on the hardwired laptop in each case as long as something was in QoS.

The only thing I didn't do was to put other devices in High and Medium QoS section so possible my test didn't reflect the same configuration. I'll add some devices to my configuration.

What happens when you only have the PC in the Highest section with out any others in QoS?
