Need some help
« on: May 21, 2014, 01:56:12 PM »

Hello everyone

First of all sorry for my english, it's not my first language.

I'm trying to set up our home network since a few days. I tried a few different combinations, but the wireless from my wireless modem (DIR-645) never worked.

To describe the situation I'm in, I have to say following:
- Internet Modem is downstairs
- Normal Router (Netgear) is downstairs
- A Switch (connected to the router) which connects one PC is downstairs
- A Switch (connected to the router) which connects one PC, one Playstation 4 and the D-Link DIR-645 is upstairs
- The DIR-645 is upstairs

So all the devices which are connected by LAN (2 PCs and PS4) work properly. Even the wireless modem DIR-645 looks like it's working, and connects sometimes to my electronical devices (e.g. Laptop, Smartphone, Tablet....) but I never have internet access on it. My laptop for example shows like 114 Mbit/s, but it shows: IPv4-Comptability: No Internet Access.

As I have listed above what is connected to what, do you might know where my problem is coming from? I have to say that the wireless modem has to be upstairs, and the normal modem has to stay downstairs.

Any changes on the router maybe? I've tried also to change several things on the wireless modem, as it connects and I even get access on it (192.168.0.1 in the web browser). But nothing has worked.

I would be really really really glad if someone can help me.
It's getting annoying as I spent so many hours trying to get it working...

Best regards

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Does the main host router have WiFi as well? If so, you'll need to make sure that the main host router is using a different channel, i.e. 11 or 13 and the 645 is using channel 1.

It sounds like your trying to use the 645 as a wired AP? Of so, please follow this:
Turning a router into an AP.

Thanks for your quick reply:

- Wireless Router: A1 / v.1.01
- Firmware-Version: 1.01 / Hardware-Version: A1 (so the same)
- Switzerland

No, it's a non WiFi- Router. How can I change this channel? The main router (Netgear) is downstairs, I just need the other wireless router (DIR-645) for wireless purposes.

Thanks and best regards

Ok if the NG doesn't have any WiFi then follow the link I provided. This will get the 645 set up in wired AP mode.

Hello once again

After some time I realised the internet is not working as I wish it would...

My wireless router upstairs is an WAP now, but the wireless is not really working. It always shows full connection, but it sometimes turns to not work (even if it shows it's connected).

I also have problems with the connection on the devices (PS4 and PC). But the weird thing is, if I'm gaming online, it does not have any lags at all... Only e.g. the navigation on the PS4 or the login on some online games in the PC is laggy and sometimes doesnt work at all..

Anyone knows what this could be?

Thanks for any advice or help...

it's the 645... it's really confusing me, because as i said as soon as I'm gaming online, everything works fine. but the problem is to even get online to a game :S

and on my smartphone, it's like working 2 mins -> not working 1 min -> working 2 mins

I really don't know what to do... I thought I have solved this mess, but no...

edit: smartphone is connected by wireless ofc, PS4 and PC by LAN-cable

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

For PS and PC gaming you can refer to the following links and see if these will help:

Hello

Thanks for your reply. I wasn't at home the last two days.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL? -> DSL
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have? -> Ubee EVM3230
Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing? -> Dynamic (and as I had to: 1st router dynamic, wireless router no DHCP)
What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have? -> Ping: 12ms, Down: 45.72 Mbps, Up: 10.40 Mbps (2nd test Down: 90.94 Mbps)

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual. -> Done
What wireless modes are you using? -> Wireless router DIR-645 (no wireless modem)
    2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N? -> mixed G and N
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only. -> 20Mhz
Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. -> Channel 1 (automatic)
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES. -> no security mode active at the moment, but it never worked with WPA2
Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by? -> No
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many? -> No
If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless. -> I can't disable the HT 20/40 coexistence, it's locked

  • If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Also check the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address of 192.168.0.1. Check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem, and if modem can't be bridged, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.
Example of a D-Link router configured for PPPoE with ISP Modem bridged: PPPoE Configuration on Router

Try Single mode N if your devices support N only mode.

Test at Auto 20/40Mhz
Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. -> Channel 1 (automatic)
Try setting manual channel 11 or 13 please.

After you switch to single mode N, try to see if HT 20/40 coexistence is unloced then disable it. It will be locked if using Mixed G and N modes.  ::)

Hello Fury

Thanks again for your help!

It is now working (but for how long..?). The thing I changed is that I put again a switch between the first and second router, and connected my computer and the PS4 directly to the switch. So these two devices work now as they should.

The wireless also worked after I followed this guide:
https://blogs.oracle.com/simonthorpe/entry/configuring_a_dlink_dir_655_as

It's for a DIR-655, but the same D-Link navigation. I will wait a few days now and hope it finally does not crash again :-)

To avoid two routers, do you think it would be a good idea to do following:
- Install the D-Link DIR-645 as primary and only router downstairs
- Buy a wireless repeater (e.g. D-Link DIR-505 or Devolo Dlan 500) and connect it to the wireless modem
- Use the wireless repeater upstairs to guarantee access upstairs as well

Or do I get even more problems doing this?

Thanks again.. Really appreciate your help!

You can follow this guide as well for Turning a router into an AP.

If you want to use the 645's routing features, I recommend bridging the ISP modem and using the 645 as the main host router and WiFi. Don't use the ISP modem accept for the connection between the 645 and the ISP service. Then you can install some 500 series extenders if you need them in far locations in the building to help extend the range at other levels.  If your using the ISP Modems WiFi and the 645 together, it could be the cuase of the interference. Disable the ISP modems wifi and test with the 645 only and see how it goes.
