826L drops WAN, doesn't come back w/o factory reset
« on: February 03, 2013, 10:47:51 AM »

Ok I purchased my first DIR-826L after my ISP swore my router was misbehaving (cox in Las Vegas) - even though it was a down grade the 826 had dual band and the icloud so I thought hey lets try it.

I installed it and got a few days and then repalced my switch behind the router to a gig switch ( I have 18 devices hard wired to the seperate switch then from the switch to the router and 12 devices that connect wirelessly)

Then out of the blue the 826 forgets it has a wan port. Uplug cable modem stick in a lap top bam its there, try to ping past the router nothing... Call into Dlink, factory reset recommended by holding reset for 60 seconds.... Reconfigured, ran 24 hrs and next morning no wan port. Again called Dlink who refered me to take it back to my retailer or rma it.

I went back to Fry's and exchanged it. This time got 3 days and then no wan port. Grabbed my old unit, plugged it in and wham as soon as it booted internet.

When it goes the cable company can no longer see any connection state on the their end, I can't ping or walk past the router from my end.

Any ideas? Router is fully patched. Usinf COX ISP in Western USA on a Docsys 3. Behind it is a 10/100/100 24 port switch. All the cables have been checked with a tester.

Link>Welcome!

Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?

What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.

WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature. Tools/Time.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8 or 9, set compatibility mode and test again.

Firmware is the latest per the website. 1.02
MTU is 1500
Modem for cable is a Motorolla Docsys 3
ISP is COX, Region West

Router is set to Auto as I do not know the speed of the Docsys 3's port though since the modem is capable of gig+ speeds I assume it has to have a gig port but, I will research that.

Currently in the network is: a 24 port gig router, a Airvana (Sprint Cellular mini tower), Vonage Adaptor, plug into the router itself is just the switch, everything runs off the switch or wireless.
DHCP was completly turned off and running static ip's on all devices it still looses the WAN port after 1 to 3 days. You can still get into the router but can't go past it. You can come in off the network to the modem's IP and log into it and see nothing attached.

I never loose WiFi, I loose the yellow internet/wan port but yes, I have two extenders in range.

Cordless phones are Panasonic 6.0's and have never bothered my other Dlink routers but, to test it I took the router to my office with none of my network stuff or wireless devices and 1 day it lost WAN.

I took the 2nd router back to Fry's replaced it again. 3rd one is doing the same thing.

Went through everything with Dlink tech support and at the end of the day only thing that brings the WAN port back online is a factory reset.

Cables are CAT6 and tested on my cable tester.

I have tested the unit on a single laptop using all 3 current browsers, IE, Firefox and Safari - you can always get to the router, you can not push data past the router to the modem.

Security is WPA-Personal
Anti Virus running is Security Essentials

QOS off, Advanced Off (DNS set to opendns.com's servers), DNS relay on - no ip6

All Motorola SB 6 Series support Gb WAN ports.

So your set up looks like this? ISP Modem>Switch><router and all devices connected to switch accept for Vonage thats connected directly to the router? I also recommend turning DHCP back on and set Reserved IP addresses ON the router for ALL devices and set devices to Auto Obtain IP addressing and test.

I never loose WiFi, I loose the yellow internet/wan port but yes, I have two extenders in range.

I took the 2nd router back to Fry's replaced it again. 3rd one is doing the same thing. This might be a red flag that there is something going on with how you have the router set up vs a problem with the router.

Went through everything with Dlink tech support and at the end of the day only thing that brings the WAN port back online is a factory reset.

I recommend testing with ISP DNS for now. I would manually input them in to the Setup/Internet/Manual section then test with DNS OFF and ON.

Model Surfboard Sb-6120

Setup is - Modem - Router - Switch - Devices

Ran both with ISP DNS and OpenDNS - Open DNS is more stable and same results.

At my office when I ran #3 it was 100% raw after patch. It lasted 11 hours.

The only things I set are password for admin, passwords for both wireless bands and their names. Otherwise 100% factory.

This is a good modem, I'm currently using this model.

Setup is - Modem - Router - Switch - Devices
I would as a test, remove the swtich and connect up a few devices to the router directly.

Huh? I don't understand this statement. #3? Raw after patch?  ???

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

The #3 router (3rd in batch) I ran 100% raw out of box from the factory, just set passwords and it lost WAN port after 12 hours.

I just patched to 1.03 an hour ago and will run and see, thanfully the patch came out as my 625 was becoming very unstable (it has heat issues) and needs to be retired.

Are you using Cox or Cox Business? Are you using the same Ethernet from modem > router as previously or did you replace it when you got the new DIR-826L?

If the problem occurs again, from the router's diagnostic page, try pinging 192.168.100.1. This will show if its a problems between modem and router, or something more complex like a DHCP lease of the WAN IP, or a ARP issue, or a T3 on the modem.

My 826L went online last Friday evening. Been using it since. No disconnections on the WAN port thats connected to a SB 6120 modem. Using out of the box settings mostly, save Wireless and turning off a couple features that I don't need ON like WPS. v1.01 came loaded and is working well right now.

Has anyone seen the following in there logs?
5 user.warn: syslog: Warn: select() failure; Errno(4): Interrupted system call

If so, what version are you seeing it? Mines using v1.01

That message is displayed on the log files ever since FW 1.0 - it is always there on all FW even on 1.03.
FW 1.03 fixes UPnP but breaks WiFi.
Will this be fixed ??

I submitted this issue directly to my contact at D-Link. I presume they know about and will fix it. I recommend downgrading to v1.02 if you haven't already. My 826L has been working pretty good on that version.
