PLEASE Help w/Setup DIR-628 + MAC
« on: May 24, 2012, 01:04:15 AM »

Let me start by saying I am extremely computer illiterate, so please go slow.  I tried to follow the owners manual to setup the network.  When I plug ethernet directly from modem to MacBook Pro, internet works.  When I plug ethernet from Modem to DIR-628 to MacBook Pro, no internet.  Both cables work when plugged directly from modem to MacBook.  I've tried resetting everything many times.

I get the power light, the internet light, and the lan lights on the D-Link.  The D-Link has H/W Version A2, Firmware Version 1.10.  I don't know how to update firmware.  I click on link, it downloads to my computer, but don't know how to get it to apply to the router.  I did download and install Shareport Utility, don't know whether that is needed for basic network setup or not.  I literally spent 4 hours trying to set this up and I want to kill something.  it was so much easier when you just put a damn disc in and follow the on screen instructions.

I went to "http://192.168.0.1" but no internet was detected because internet isn't working when cables are run through router.  Ugh, my head hurts so bad.  Thanks, if you try to help, please remember I don't know anything.

Welcome!
What region are you located?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

I presume that the MAC networking is setup for automatic and to detect any IP addressing it gets from any Internet connection?
When you wire connect to the router, can you get the routers web page at 192.168.0.1 in Safari?
Shareport is not needed for setting up the router and connecting to the Internet.

Thanks for the reply.  I'm not familiar with all the terminology but I'll try to answer one at a time.

Located in Dallas, TX.
Time Warner Cable.
Modem Provided by Time Warner is Arris TG852.
I do not know if it has a built in router.  The cable guy said I needed my own router.
I do not know how to do this:
"To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ."

I have never had a problem connecting to any wifi with my MacBook before, hotels, previous apartment, etc.
I was able to see routers webpage when I typed "192.168.0.1".  It said that internet was not detected but the ethernet was running from modem to router to computer.  I tried to just open the internet to see if the signal was passing through router via ethernet but webpages said I wasn't connected to internet.  Ethernet from modem to computer works, but not ethernet from modem to router to computer.

Thanks for trying to help.

Ok, Have had some issues with Arris modems and getting them working well with external routers.

Just to verify that you do have the cable running from the Internet port on the Modem connecting to the Internet or WAN port on the back of the 628? And not connected to 1 of the 4 LAN ports in back right?

When you connect to the routers web page, can you log into the routers web page using the Admin name and just hit enter or click enter. The Password is blank by default. Can you get into the routers web page area?

I'm thinking there maybe a configuration issue with the router and modem and possible that the router needs to be configured differently. I'm thinking the router may need to be MAC Cloned to the modem.

I wish I was there to help you more however you may need to seek in person help to get this going.

I had everything wired correctly.  Modem connected to "Internet" port on router.  "Lan 1" from router connected to computer.  As soon as I run cables through router, I no longer can get the internet.  Even as I try to do the things you suggest, I have to disconnect cables from router and go directly to computer in order to get online.

I was able to log into router's webpage.  As I go through the setup process, it says no internet detected, as mentioned in the first paragraph.  I assume I need to be connected to the internet to connect properly.  It said "Network Status- Incorrectly Configured" and the IP address you asked for was 0.0.0.0.

Is the software on the router out of date?  Would updating that allow the internet to pass through it and if so, how do I update it?  Thanks again for trying, I do appreciate it.

If your getting to the router and getting the web page I don't think the router is the issue here.
Have you swapped cables between the modem and router to see if it acquires Internet?
You can check the status of this connection by going to the routers web page under Status/Device Info/Wan section, you should see the Internet or WAN IP address here.

I would do the following: power off the Modem and 628 for 30 sec. Ensure the modem and router are all connected with cables. Turn ON the modem first and let it sync. After it seems to be ready, power ON the 628. You can leave your Mac going or also power off the Mac too to be sure. After the router seems to come to ready, look at the globe on the 628, it should turn yellow to green. Does it change colors at all? Or continuously blink?

You can turn ON the Mac and go to the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wans section. What does it say here?

One thing you can try if Internet doesn't seem to connect after doing the above, goto the Setup/Internet/Manual on the routers web page with your Mac:
Internet Connection Type: should be Dynamic IP
Dynamic IP (DHCP) Internet Connection Type : Select the Clone Your PCs MAC Address.
Then select Save Settings. The router should reboot here.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

Have swapped cables to make sure they work.

Does not have an IP address in Status/Device Info/Wan section.  Can I send you a screen shot or does that have private info?

Did the restart again.  Globe stays steady yellow, won't turn green. 2.4GHz blinks green and 1 is green.

Did the last thing you suggested as well.  It said, nothing changed, Save anyway?  Ugh.

Ok, last thing we can try, since you can access the routers web page, you can download FW update.
There is an update to the router located here:
http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=DIR-628&tab=3
Firmware   1.25NA   12/28/2010

Download the file to the desktop of the Mac and UNPACK the file. You'll get a new folder on the desktop. Go into this folder and just verify that there is a .bin file listed here. Be wired to the router for this.

Using Safari, Don't use Chrome or any other browser, do the following steps:
1. Factory reset the router using the routers web page Tools/System, is easiest, or the back button. Let it come back to ready.

2. Update the router using the routers web page Tools/System using the .bin file(s) that was downloaded to the desktop folder. Select the .bin file from the unpack folder. Select apply. Follow the instructions.

3. After the router as updated and status has reported it was successful on the routers web page. Perform one more Factory reset of the router using the routers web page Tools/System.

4. check to see if the globe has changed from yellow to green.

Let us know how it goes. Take each step slowly and don't get rushed. The update should go well.

Is this your ISP modem link?
Arris TG852

If so, this modem has a built in router already. Do you have phone service with this ISP?
One thing to try if you haven't been able to get the router to connect, go into the Setup/Networking Settings and under Router Settings/Router IP Address
Change the address from 192.168.0.1 to 1.1, save settings and reboot the router. Might have to power off modem and router again then back on.

Holy Crap it WORKED.  The globe is green.  I now have internet passing through my router.  That is my modem.  Do I just follow the online setup at this point?

Good to hear, you can follow the wizard or set up the Wireless manually and such. Glad it's working for you. I guess there was an issue with out dated FW.  ::)

I recommend doing the following:
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Thanks A LOT.  I can't thank you enough.

Wasn't sure how to do these:
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address
Turn of WISH and WPS under Advanced.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Don't see Networking under Advanced.  There is a Network Filter but choices you mentioned aren't listed.

Thanks again so much.  I owe you A LOT of beers.
