Title: Wifi devices unable to connect to Wifi router after resuming from sleep
Post by: siddhartha.agrawal on November 05, 2014, 05:35:02 AM
I use about 10 wireless devices in my house. Earlier, when I was using D-Link DSL 2750U, all my devices would connect normally, without error. However, when I changed my ISP, I also changed the Wifi router to DIR-803. Now, every once in a while, one or more of my devices will refuse to connect to the wifi router after resuming/waking up from sleep. They will keep showing "Connecting..." to either the 2.4GHz or the 5GHz band SSIDs, but will timeout and stop trying to connect after a while. This is happening on all kinds of devices - iPhone 5S, Nokia Lumia 920, Acer Aspire S7 Laptop etc.

On the wifi router, I can see in the logs several entries like the following, when one of the devices is trying to connect after being woken up from sleep/standby but isn't able to:
Code: [Select]
Wed Nov 5 18:20:08 2014  Got new client [34:C8:03:92:88:CC] associated from BAND24G-1.1 (2.4 Ghz)
Wed Nov 5 18:18:18 2014  Got new client [34:C8:03:92:88:CC] associated from BAND24G-1.1 (2.4 Ghz)
Wed Nov 5 18:18:07 2014  Got new client [34:C8:03:92:88:CC] associated from BAND5G-1.1 (5 Ghz)
Wed Nov 5 18:16:11 2014  Got new client [34:C8:03:92:88:CC] associated from BAND24G-1.1 (2.4 Ghz)
Wed Nov 5 18:16:01 2014  Got new client [34:C8:03:92:88:CC] associated from BAND5G-1.1 (5 Ghz)
Wed Nov 5 18:14:05 2014  Got new client [34:C8:03:92:88:CC] associated from BAND24G-1.1 (2.4 Ghz)
Wed Nov 5 18:13:55 2014  Got new client [34:C8:03:92:88:CC] associated from BAND5G-1.1 (5 Ghz)
Wed Nov 5 18:13:19 2014  Got new client [34:C8:03:92:88:CC] associated from BAND5G-1.1 (5 Ghz)
Wed Nov 5 18:12:43 2014  Got new client [34:C8:03:92:88:CC] associated from BAND5G-1.1 (5 Ghz)
Wed Nov 5 18:12:07 2014  Got new client [34:C8:03:92:88:CC] associated from BAND5G-1.1 (5 Ghz)

To work around the problem, I either have to restart the wifi router or randomly wake up another device which was working till some time back, which somehow triggers a successful connection in the first one also. For example:

Code: [Select]
Wed Nov 5 18:23:24 2014  DHCP: Server sending ACK to 192.168.0.120. (Lease time = -1)
Wed Nov 5 18:23:24 2014  DHCP: Server receive REQUEST from 34:c8:03:92:88:cc.
Wed Nov 5 18:23:24 2014  DHCP: Server sending OFFER of 192.168.0.120 for static DHCP client.
Wed Nov 5 18:23:24 2014  DHCP: Server receive DISCOVER from 34:c8:03:92:88:cc.
Wed Nov 5 18:23:24 2014  Got new client [7C:7A:91:D5:32:4D] associated from BAND5G-1.1 (5 Ghz)
Wed Nov 5 18:23:23 2014  DHCP: Server sending ACK to 192.168.0.177. (Lease time = -1)
Wed Nov 5 18:23:23 2014  DHCP: Server receive REQUEST from 7c:7a:91:d5:32:4d.
Wed Nov 5 18:23:23 2014  Got new client [34:C8:03:92:88:CC] associated from BAND5G-1.1 (5 Ghz)
Wed Nov 5 18:22:46 2014  Got new client [34:C8:03:92:88:CC] associated from BAND5G-1.1 (5 Ghz)

This issue is quite frustrating because one can never be sure if a device being used will be usable after sleep.

Is anyone else facing the same issue?

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.
