First need to know a little about your network.

1. ISP
2. Modem
3. Wireless devices; how many, what radio type (G or N).
4. Enviroment. City, country, Suburb
5. Other things you do. Gaming, Torent, LAN streaming, servers?

Its good that your willing to put the extra effort in. 1 hour of work when you get your the router will save you 10 hours of headache later.

Well usually I do a thorough setup on routers but I noticed dlink usually has a lot of ssettings I haven' t don't a through setup since ddwrt.

isp is cable 25megs down and 2megs up
Sb6121 modem

Il have about 4 or 5 devices using this ones WiFi which 2 will be 5ghz which would be phones and the other 2 are laptops which use most of the bandwidth in the house sometimes 1 of the laptops is mine but most of the time it's hardwired for gigabit.

For the network there is a total of about 25 devices the other 5 wireless devices connect to an access point which is a different said but is a complete pass thru so no double stuff.

live in the  middle of nowhere lol so only wireless networks are mine. For my main router I usually choose channel 1 and channel 11 for the access point 2 story house never had an router reach. Downsstairs and work 100%.

Also my laptop server and media pc connected to the tv does almost 24\7 of media streaming from my server so lots of local traffic. Yes there is gaming and torrenting as well.

Sorry for spelling mistakes using cell phone haha

Yea sstaples here only hhas the 655 for like 80 which is a rip off. They have a ton of netgear which I never cared for. This will bbe hhopefully my first dlink product I keep. Thisbwill only be my 2nd one though.

Ya $80 is a bit much for that router. $50 new is better. Specially when you can find them cheaper used or at other sites.

I got my 826L for $75 and it does more than the 655 does.  ;D

Its a nice feature, you can manage your router from the cloud if you enable it and can access connected USB storage device as well, when enabled. Doesn't have to be. Nice feature though. Simple stuff.

So Should I set up my network with my main computers mostly on the GB Switch? and maybe use another Switch for Lower traffic things?

Like GB switch in Port 1 of the Router and my main devices

Then my 10/100 switch in port 2 with the "Other Things"

Would that work Good? or better than How I used to do things?

I used to wire the first 3 ports of the router to my main devices then the 4th port would go to a switch and go to the "other" devices
Title: Re: Just Ordered One:D
Post by: FurryNutz on March 29, 2013, 03:44:22 PM
Can do that as well. Adding switches to routers can be flexible. Just kind of depends on where you highest band width traffic is on the LAN side between devices.

Yes need to use some switches and get your LAN side hogging xfers off the router and more directly connected between them instead.
Title: Re: Just Ordered One:D
Post by: hyelton on March 29, 2013, 04:28:41 PM
The GB switch would have 3 Computers, Laptop(Which Does Torrenting)Server(Sometimes Torrenting on it) and Media PC which is where all the High Lan Transfers happen and the most Internet BW happens.  Then Put the rest on port 2 through a 10/100 switch.

As long as the D-link works Great the ONLY I mean ONLY thing I`m going to miss is to able to see what Bandwidth is going on through the router Like I could with DD-WRT or ASUS Routers, Thats the only Thing I know that I am going to miss.

Title: Re: Just Ordered One:D
Post by: hyelton on April 01, 2013, 10:01:52 AM
Well I updated it to V1.02 It had V1.0 on it. I didnt want to do V1.03 as I read about the issues. Is V1.02 good?
Title: Re: Just Ordered One:D
Post by: FurryNutz on April 01, 2013, 10:09:14 AM
 ::) Ok.

Ya, v1.02 seems good, at least for me. Haven't seen any issues. I've been running thru some Shareport tests, doing some basic connections between Windows 7 and OSX 10.7/8 to see how it works. I haven't been able to test the 826L yet. Will today or tomorrow.

Other then that, gaming on XBL is great and Wifi seems good for me here. I like the range. Mostly general internet on Wired, 2.4Ghz is my Mac Book sometimes on 2.4Ghz. 5Ghz is dedicated to my roommates 360 while mine is wired to the back.

Let us know how you like it and how it works for you.
Title: Re: Just Ordered One:D
Post by: hyelton on April 01, 2013, 10:16:24 AM
I can do some 5Ghz range testing but no speed:( The Dell D630 which I bought for my mom last year quit on here last week her new ASUS should be here today, But I took a Blow Toruch to the Nvidia GPU which was the issue and BAM works! So I`ll problay keep it and it has a 5ghz WiFi Card in it:) But only Wireless A, I would swap it with my Laptop but mine but its a G/A card. Maybe my mom`s new asus will have one I can swap   ::) haha

Transfer over 5Ghz 150mb through my phone is FAST so far:) I`m about to do a factory reset since I upgraded it, then set up my settings and BLAST a ton of Data through it, Got my Final Fantasy 14 closed beta invite today so thats 9GB, Then I have about 30GB of torrents piled up from the weekend(Slow connection where I was at) and Have to Redownload World of Warcraft 22GB so LOTS to push through it.

Awesome. Are you using an app to determine the speed between the router and your phone?

I recommend turning OFF Advanced DNS Service.  ;)

Yea:D haha its at 10% now haha.

So I have a question, So I am MAXING out my connection pretty much right now, and other routers I usually don't have a problem with this but I`m downloading Final Fantasy 14 at my max of a little over 24megs, well Youtube seems to want to studder and when I run a speed test I only get about 2-4megs down, Usually with my other routers it will redirect some bandwidth and allow it to be used elsewhere the ONLY type of QOS I use is Upload QOS so I know its not that which allowed me to do that. Also Latency in WoW is 125 when its usually about 69-75 when downloading.
Title: Re: Just Ordered One:D
Post by: FurryNutz on April 01, 2013, 01:53:43 PM
You may have to set up QoS and see if that does anything.

I personally don't do any downloading while gaming and I really don't recommend it as it can introduce latency on the WAN and LAN sides. Also which is seen on other gamer systems while gaming with you.

I believe QoS is enabled however not fully configured. Is this with True Gigabit Networking enabled or disabled?
Title: Re: Just Ordered One:D
Post by: hyelton on April 01, 2013, 02:11:46 PM
Its with QOS on and the true gigabit off.

Title: Re: Just Ordered One:D
Post by: FurryNutz on April 01, 2013, 03:33:09 PM
Ok, well you are probably hammering the router so I would expect some latency depending on how your downloading, seeding, gaming and such.
Title: Re: Just Ordered One:D
Post by: hyelton on April 02, 2013, 02:44:21 PM
So I tested the range a little today and WOW it went out further than I was expecting, The Router on on the back side of the house upstairs in my room.
